  • gary numan is brilliant

  • "David Bowie" light .-)

  • Chris Payne is using a Minimoog thats sat on top of a Polymoog 203a synthesizer. Do you want to know what Currie is playing ?

  • The Great Alan Partridge brought me here!

  • graham was too cool for school (though he did still attend)

  • now i realise why i liked punk lol. but now im older mmmm

  • God this still sends shivers down my spine.

  • Thsi blew me away when I saw the programme!

  • Gary had the best stage attitude, love that glowering charisma. This song is every nightmare I have ever had, boiled down to a terrifying drone. Bloody brilliant.

  • Classic, brilliant!

  • Hard to believe I was into all things tubeway army once. I played the album until it melted. It's probably now viewed as a bit gloomy but at the time noone had heard a style like this before, it was a benchmark of what could be chieved with the technology to hand at the time.

  • Absoultey timeless

  • This song is so esoteric. I wonder how many people know the true meaning.

  • @TheMrEMeat What is the true meaning?

  • Also an Ace Pilot!

  • Alan Partridge. A man of impeccable music taste.

  • Love it.

  • I can´t hear currie`s synth......

  • this video shows how important Sharpley and Payne were to the sound of Numan's early work.

  • Cedric looks vexed man!

  • uufff i can say loads of things about this genious. he was so one step ahead at his time. he was just 21 in this video. the lyrics pure sci-fi. I love gary. Question, anyone knows which synth they used in the video? cheers!

  • @pituparanoico

Chris Payne has a Mini Moog on top of a Poly Moog. He just plays the Mini. Billy Currie (on loan from ultravox) appears to have a small ARP Axxe and a string machine like a ARP or Elka.

Who is playing guitar? The late Paul Gardner is on Bass and Ced Sharpley on drums.

  • @Franzko787 thanx dude! i was looking for that piece of info. I was looking in the book (praying to the aliens) and it doesnt say anything about the guitar player or im partially blind....have you seen gary lately? i have tickets for september the 17th at the o2 academy!

  • @Franzko787 i must be partially blind...the book (Praying to the Aliens) says he is Garry Robson.

  • @pituparanoico It looks like a Minimoog. the old 70s model. Surely they used Moog and ARP synths in the studio. There are two guys playing here. Not sure what the other guy is using.

  • @pituparanoico Billy Currie knows. >=o)

  • @pituparanoico - I believe he used a Minymoog that he found left behind by another band...

  • everyone else just seems like gary's hired technicians lol. except of course for the drummer, he's more into it than gary (but we prefer gary that way, do we not? of course one could argue he expresses enthusiasm with his projected stoicism)

  • @newfuckingwave hahaha true. the thing is that the drummer is his uncle.

  • @pituparanoico well it was his uncle, jess lidyard (or 'rael'), on the lp version but the drummer for this particular performance was cedric sharpley. although i don't think i need to elaborate why it would be hilarious if gary and sharpley were related . . .

  • you rock Cedric

  • Tubeway Army songs always remind me of the movie "Blade Runner." Gary was also known as the android.

  • awesome

  • I don't think Chris Paynes synth was conneceted to the sound system properly

  • All the best comes out of England!!! Ours can never compare!!! I'm looking at Gary's hair....man! the Fonze's (american tv show happy days) hair had nothing on Gary"s!

Gary was deeply blessed with extremely good looks.....Smoking!!!

  • @DominionDayME Us americans had good bands: The Cars Devo Talkling Heads

  • @360Freakoutkid i think punk/post punk/new wave was the only era after the british invasion that we ever came close to equalling the brits. and even at that there is some overlap (for instance, talking heads were produced by eno and david byrne lived in scotland as a child). nothing to be ashamed of though, they are just the best. i have no problem admitting that

  • @360Freakoutkid talking heads is not purely american, but hell man, The Doors! nuff said.

  • great song!! Numan is a living legend!

  • Gen X rules

  • the brits just rule in the music department period....

  • People have been asking who the guitarist was on this clip. I heard that it was Gary Robson who was Numan's best mate and was the guy who created the famous Tubeway Army face from the 'That's too Bad' single cover. I could be wrong and I can't remember where I heard it but it does look like him.

  • @garycee yes it is Gary Robson on guitar its in Numan's autobiography praying to the aliens

  • Why Gary hasn't thought of opening a chain of restaurants with a futuristic theme called Zom Zoms, boggles my mind. After all...it is "a place to eat."

Maybe he just can't make it look like it was built in one day....sigh

  • Brilliant, after the God of Gods,Todd Rundgren this guy is a God

  • yeah numan visited the states a while ago i think. some foreign gigs were cancelled due to natural disasters like that volcano and earthquakes and stuff. keep checkin his web site. for info.

  • Does he tour the States at all anymore?

  • @zed0469 : Possibly - he's currently touring Australia for the 30th anniversary of the release of "The Pleasure Principle" - got my ticket to see him on May 16th :) Probably best to do a web search to see if there's any US dates.

  • I love Gary Numan.

  • This music really stands the test of time.

  • Loved Gary Numan. Actually last saw him in 2008 or thereabouts!

  • close your eyes and listen to this, you could almost be in the film"bladerunner".....the author of the book "do androids dream of electric sheep?" phillip.k.dick is a favourite of gary numan and mine.great posting.

  • Ahh.... 80's synth riffs, doesn't get much better than that

  • @chrisqgtm Synth riffs are from the 70s as proof by this song.

  • Cedric's cool n all...but I reckoned he ruined the solemn pose Numan was tring to convey with all that unnecessary faffing about behind the skins ...

  • i am 16 and i know a crap load of 80s music this is by far his best song king of the synthesizers sorry i misspelled dat

  • @TheSteelersManiac Pittsburgh? Me, too. Agree. Numan's best song. And if you really crank up the CD, eerie... as... hell... Noone has ever sounded like him, before or since. Strange genius. Unique.

  • @cosg9531 indeed he was unique using the synthesizer in ways that are well cool u could say this was good music even 4 the 70s

  • Moves like Bowie...still good though.

  • hold on...is that Steve Coogan on keys at 3m45s?? Either way, wot a fab vid, lovin Cedric Sharpley's drumming, and gurning! Viva the Sharpley.

  • @KookyMiss2 i think the keyboardist to garys right is chris payne and the others billy curry (from ultravox)

  • @TheRealVolanaro

    Ah...thanks!

  • Cedric was from the 70's prog band 'Druid' - great!!!

  • It's a shame that Gary is mostly known for "cars."

Not that it's a bad song or anything, just not his greatest work.

  • I didnt know Obama was a drummer

  • @indyboom HA!good one!!

  • @wanagi006 He has to be doing somthing with his time.. he sure as hell aint in the office doing "important work" Just having black/white beer and calling Mike Vick

  • @indyboom Mike Vick... GRAHHHH!!! i would luv 5 min with him and my pit. and doncha know i am from south jersey (eagles land)and now live in Va (where that ignorant pig killed the dogs.)...oh i could scream endlessly about J.L. signing him, then Obamawama calls J.L. to commend him??? Is it just me ????or does anyone else see a problem with this?i wouldn't want him(sick vick) mentoring my child,so what is obamawama doing patting him on the back (or butt ) ???happy new year ,my fellow american.

  • NUMAN = GENIUS.

  • Agreed, a lot of the elements in this song seem close to Rush's Tom Sawyer. I wonder how much Peart and Lee were influenced by Numan and Tubeway...

  • Pure unadulterated AWESOMENESS.

  • I just saw Gary in NYC and he was AWESOME!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Is it me or is that synth lick close to Rush's 'Tom Sawyer'??

  • Comment removed

  • This takes me back - I recognise all but the guitarist - anyone know who he is. I know it's not Russell Bell or Sean Burke! To prove I was a keen fan, here goes:

    Drums - Cedric Sharpey : Bass - Paul Gardiner : Synth 1 - Chris Payne : Synth 2 - Billy Curry(Ultravox).

  • pure excelence

  • brittish music is awsome period

  • You Brits had such cool bands in the 80ies! Respects :-)))

  • @goodvsbad21, and 70's, such as this one

  • @goodvsbad21 we still do, they are just harder to find as the sony, emi and co... do all they can to hide them!

  • @goodvsbad21 70's, this :>

  • @goodvsbad21 yes but this is 1979..get the point?

  • gary and his army at there best...dark .heavy..moody exerlents..cedric proveing again he was the armys best drummer....this sound does what it says on the packet..deliver pure quality...long live gary and his troops....much luv hawklord1965

  • Classic

  • I loved Sharpley, Shame he no longer plays with Numan...

  • @zombiegod hey i believe ced sharpley plays with a band called boozadaddy now

  • @zombiegod Yes,hes a good drummer...Numan should get him back behind the drums.Unless there was some illwill from before.....

  • @zombiegod agreed, the current drummer (Mr 'abuse the highhat'), leaves alot to be desired and frankly downright ruins his songs live.

  • Such vision to NOT use a drum track and an actual human drummer, Mr, Sharpley. Excellent! Makes the difference.

  • @URturn2njoy I think it was more to do with drum tracks and machines at that time were so useless and let you down outside of the studeo, and even if you had a Cr-78 you would iver have to play more or less the same pattan on all the songs or you would need one for every song ,that is why kraftwerk never used them and made electric contact pads instead, realy befor the Lynn drum' s in 1981 the drum sound was very hard to do live,

  • @cypionate011 wow! thanks for your insight and comments. It makes total sense. greeting from across the pond. take care, Liz

  • Replicas has some great writing on it, and surprisingly good musician-ship, but the fundamental point that computers will be our enemies has been proved sadly wide of the mark.

I would like to live in a world where computers and their auton robots are trying to take over the world, instead all I have to interface with is the pile of shit called Vista

  • Saw Tubeway at Wolves civic hall in 79 with OMD playing support. What a fantastic gig. This brings back a few memories.

  • May I enqire how you got this footage? I would love to have it. Is it on a OGWT DVD or is it downloadable?

Either way i'd like to have it.

  • @Jarren202 its on best of ogwt vol 1

  • @Grahamlad Nice one, thanks for the info!

  • Makes me proud to have been born in 1979...

  • i wish someone could cut out that guys voice from 0:00 to 0:12

  • Dammit there should be more OGWT DVD releases!! This isn't on any of them!

  • Dope!

  • Dope!

  • Anyone know who the guitarist is on this one? I don't recognize him.

  • @TheLemonKid01 Trevor Grant or Paul Gardiner correct me if im wrong

  • @Marc7665 Thanks for the answer. Paul Gardiner is the bassist so that leaves Trevor Gardiner. Don't think I've heard of him before.

  • @TheLemonKid01 I think you are right its been so long since ive heard anything about the Tubeway army i forgot :D

  • i had never heard tubeway army's songs before . it is a big shock for me . the best thing i heard in years .

  • The simple fact is this .. are you a fan or not, did you experience Gary Numan or Tubeway Army? if you didn't shut up. I did and can tell you that the man is awsome on vinyl and live in concert, oh and he is a bloody good pilot too

  • @jeffiegirl you tell em Girl - if gods not out walking his dog - then hes at home listening to numan - or blondie - there both awsome

  • damn, uncle cedric is wearin' them drums out!!!!! thanks for posting, brilliant!!!!

  • @thepnc He is a damn good drummer, probably my favorite who has played with Gary.

  • @MidnightinSavannah i think cedric (and the rest of the band) were extremely important to his earlier sound, when you listen to some of his later stuff you can plainly tell its not the same band, BTW goin to see gary oct. 20th and 21st, cant wait!

  • @thepnc I agree entirely. I think Cedric's drums on the Pleasure Principle where so inovative. I think Gary must have thought so as well since the drums are so prominent in the mix (pushed forward) throughout the whole album. I think Numan got stale (and lost) when he stopped getting input from other musicians.

  • @AlienOscillator if you want to hear the band at their finest check out living ornaments from 79 and 80, you can hear (imo) all the best versions of these songs, they were on top of their game!

  • @thepnc Numan is coming to the states in October and i can't wait.I plan on seeing all the shows in the South east US.

  • @MidnightinSavannah already got my tickets for d.c. and philly!

  • Think it was on the Living Ornaments 1980 album there was a mint version of this.

  • Good point, these guys and Ultravox were pioneers of the new wave

  • Haha Lol This aint Gary it's William ! Some o u suckers will know what I Mean ! ! ?

  • oh Gary Numan, my fellow Aspie

  • Cedric on the drums....superb!

  • "Down in the park with the rank and file..."

  • @TheRedScareIsAlive " Down in the park with a friend called,' Five ' "

  • @timoteo5000 yep. " a friend called five". know these lyrics by heart, was singing along with Gary!

  • The lyrics to this song are straight up sci-fi and I totally dig it.

  • Splendid. Pity the video on this clip isn't as sharp as Are Friends Electric from the same show...

  • this is the stuff.....

  • Still no definitive version of this song on YouTube...

The Next Best Thing, however, is this Toothticiously-Poptastic intro Overcommentary by Legendary Starmongulous Radio1 DJ BoB HaRRiS, -Lavishing gushing fametabulous guff'n'praise upon an 'artiste' that David Bowie Once Threatened to Sprinkle liberally upon His Own Cappuccino.....

  • the Girls Under Glass Coverversion from "down in the park" is great!

    Look by You Tube...

  • Hammersmith Apollo 1979 !! Happy Days!!

  • great song,i have the 2 tubeway army albums,great stuff,but i still favour that song,"are friends dyslexic"

  • Cedric on the drums.

    Brilliant!

  • @staffsmole

    oh yes.

  • The drummer is cool

  • Great song. Awful synth sound on this version though. Too high, too thin, too much resonance and the LFO is too fast on the phaser.

  • you sir know your stuff very well said

  • Numan is my robot friend.

  • Gary Chris Paul Cedric Billie.

    But who is the guitarist?

  • @BULLETPROOFGONG

Rrussell Bell I think, though i might be wrong

  • The guitarist here is Trevor Grant

  • Comment removed

  • @BULLETPROOFGONG Trevor Grant or Sean Burke

  • umm, why do i have 3 thumbs down? Idiots

  • @BULLETPROOFGONG Trevor Grant was recruited specially for the OGWT performance and the following TOTP.

  • i seen numan his live performances are great

  • I LOVE GARY NUMAN

  • The thing that makes Gary Numan amazing is the fact that his live performances are great. Most bands that were a part of this movement at this time had a hard time playing live compared to what they could do in the studio. His concerts are flawless and innovative even today. His voice still sounds the same and most artists that have been around as long as him can't perform like Numan does. Numan will be remembered in history as one of the most progressive artists long after we are all gone.

  • @djcorbijn Human League were also great live

  • Your not alone.

  • cedric is stunning on the drums!

  • another fave of mine feel so old

  • Gary Numan is the best there could be and it might sound weird comming from a guy from the US. You know with the black eyed peas and beyonce.

  • I remember talking to a friend about the "Cars" video. he commented that the drummer, Cedric Sharpley was "Always Chewing Gum." Seems he's chewing in this clip as well.

  • Yeah Gary Nuam its he best!

  • I never bought a record until I heard Gary Numan!

    Yes, I live in USA

New Wave Music is the best!

  • Dear liverworst4u

    One born every day !

    cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Yes it is,yes it is. U r so right!!

  • who cares it's a good song and that's all that matters

  • drummer looks scary at 1.00

  • Why do people have to start arguing and swearing when they are supposed to be watching a classic, brilliant, influencial video like this?

    Thier mentality is beyond me.

  • This is a spine-chillingly great song . Reminds me of War Of The Worlds for some reason!! Still sounds great now & live too. Just great Numan material. Plus Bob Harris still sounds the same eh?!!

  • all they need is the lightning bolt in the back ground ;) (joke).

  • Nothing better than synth-punk with punk guitars!

  • i agree but that's not what this is, this is electro pop with punky guitars

  • electro ! pop ! ? You are indeed a twat , fuckamericanidiot , this is more newwave post punk with added synths... first electropop labelled bands were probably depeche mode and human league etc. although ,the league started off more edgy and less poppy , like this track

  • you know it, bro

  • You're right these other americanidiots are fucking clueless to the vibe on the music scene in Britain at that time. Ground breaking stuff at the time (along with the likes of Japan and early Jon Foxx/Ultravox) and the electro synthipop thing came later and was basically the comercialisation of what the likes of Numan were originally doing. I agree with you about the leage as well and although Depeche mode started kinda lightwieght poppy they later became kinda more edgy.(personal Jesus etc.)

  • Nicely put. My thoughts too.

  • Not this one, son. Not this one.

Btw,did you catch Billy Currie on synth in this clip?

  • Love this!

    Really!

    Power ;*
