You seem to have next to nothing as far as 'noise' goes, what sort of settings did you use to avoid that or was some of it cleaned up in post processing?
@g2theb It was a bright day, I wouldn't expect much image noise. As this was a pre-production camera, we used the default settings. There was no grading on the images.
@TheCameraStoreTV I guess i've not tried it outdoors in the day yet. Have you filmed it much in low light - especially indoors (My house is full of energy saving light bulbs), and if so how have you found the noise, i've tried turning the gain down and adjusting the aperture but it's still quite grainy! Thanks
Downloading files from this camera seem take forever. When downloading from the internal memory or the disks to a Mac G4 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro, should there a problem with the amount of time it takes, like hours. Using the USB to download take twice the amount of time actually shot. What are we doing wrong?
@pinebarranch Final Cut Pro cannot natively work with the files from the XA-10, so it takes a long time to convert the files to ProRes. Final Cut X is much faster, however it will not run on an old G4 machine. You may just have to wait it out.
@CHproduction94 Both have the same low light ability, however, if you use noise reduction software, the XF100 cleans up nicer due to its better codec.
Is it still the case that unless you are using tape, that compression must be used, and thus, quality is lost especially for post processing purposes?
@FrodoDojo All video formats going onto a computer must be compressed. The compression on new AVCHD cameras is as good or better than tape based compression.
@JediFarce There are a few other differences. The XA10 adds Infrared recording, 64GB built in memory, and a standard hotshoe instead of the proprietary Canon shoe.
@sesukaku1 We cut on Final Cut Pro or Premiere CS5.5, depending on the camera. This was cut on Final Cut Pro 7. iMovie 09 and 11 support the files from the XA10.
hey I also have an Xa10 and would like my youtube videos to look like this one! What are you editing in and what are the export settings PLEASE HELP! I have CS5
@GadgetVision Where in the video is this frauded theme? All our music is from Apple's Garageband except our opening theme, which is by the band Platinum Alibi, and I have full written permission to use their music. I'd say its more likely we both used the same Garageband loops.
I would like to know if you could tell me about the audio. I would like to use the camera to capture ogran, choir performances. Do you think This camera would do a great job in capturing the exact sound of the room with the instruments.. what mic would you recommend.
@Fender82097 We are using an Audio Technica AT-803 Lavalier mic, running into a Zoom H4n. The XA does not have a built in fisheye effect, but you can mount a fisheye adaptor onto the 58mm front filter.
What about the rattling problem of the buttons on the handle? Is that fixed by Cannon? Also I wanted to ask, is the camera's image stabilization system any good for handheld shots? Specifically for shooting sports etc. Thank you for your time.
@autokinisimag We didn't encounter any rattling problem, but we had the bolts locked down tight. The stabilization is very effective, especially the Powered IS, but only use the powered S for static shots where you are not moving or panning.
I have a canon 60D and would like to get a camcorder that would be able to match the footage i get with the 60D as close as possible. Any recomendations?
Final question from a neewbe.. what gives the best result of 24P or 50i. i know 50i is sort of crap and that i really wanna use progressive. just wanna have an pro's advice
@ArcticRc I far prefer the look of progressive video. All our videos are shot in either 30P or 24P. This video was shot at 30P. For some videos shot at 24P check out our videos, The Battle At F-Stop Ridge, The Desert, and The Expo Promo.
I only use interlaced video for older editing systems.
Just arrived in my mail today.. But im a bit confused.. Cause it can only film in 50i or P24.. I was sure this baby could film in 60 Frames allowing me to make some good slow motion movies.. Do you know about this?
@ArcticRc I assume you are in a PAL country? The PAL XA10 will only shoot 24P or 50i. The NTSC can do 24P, 30P and 60i. For 60P, you need to go up to the XF100 which shoots 720/60P
@TheCameraStoreTV Thanks for fast reply. Yeah pal country. I use twixtor in adobe but need 60frames.. any idea how i can manage this.. and can i turn my camera into ntsc land?
@ClavisqueFC Sony Vegas 10 accept AVCHD natively, not Final Cut which takes 3 hours to import and convert 16GB, which will take about 100GB on the hard disk
@TheCameraStoreTV Thanks Jordan! I'm in the market to buy a Prosumer Camera. I was looking at the Sony NEX VG-10, Canon XA10 and Canon 7D. All cameras have there pros and cons but I'm not sure which one will be the best all around camera. Any ideas?
@drakescz Much like the DSLR's, you can turn down the Saturation down a notch in the picture styles settings. However, if the Xa10 is similar to the G10 you're restricted to -2 on each setting.
@drakescz I forgot to mention, correcting your 'Canon red' flesh tones isn't really a problem when corrected in post. Just by desaturating, and slightly increasing the gama levels and maybe adjusting the white balance of the footage, this issue pretty much disappears in the editing software.
Just a rule of thumb: If you're gonna upload test footage to YouTube of a camcorder so people can see the quality, please don't edit and then render out the edited file to a lower quality than the camcorder/camera is able to record in, it helps the viewer (and potential buyers) see the full capability of the camcorder/camera.
@SavageLegacy28 1st, youtube isn't Vimeo. If you want true HD quality footage that's where you need to go and why I purchased an account there. 2nd, this camcorder records in AVCHD, it's not going to put out same quality as a DSLR would. 3rd, if you record using the cinema mode setting, it puts out a 'Flat' image that requires color grading. Unedited it will put off the unlearned by believing the images are poor rather than comprehending the advantage of editing Flat video.
when you take pictures with this camera does it work say you spin a wheel then take a picture of it it looks like the wheel isnt moveing and turns out hd
I dont get it... I was reading the specs and it said 2.3 mp. HD... Then i saw a cheaper camera with 14 mp. HD but it wasn't looking as good as this one, someone please explain that to me
@pokemonhat HD video is only 2 megapixels. The extra pixels are just used for still capture. A lower pixel count actually improves video quality. The only reason you would want a high megapixel camera is for still capture.
@TheCameraStoreTV So let me get this, the lower the megapixel, the better video quality, the worse picture quality........ the higher the megapixel, the lower video quality, the better pictures. So when i see specs that say: Resolution: HD 1280p Megapixel: 14, means it is more of a camera to take pictures with rather then filming, thanks I finally understand!!!
I've got a $2000 budget for a camera, and I've done a lot of looking and poking around, and I'm most likely to get this. Just out of curiosity, is there ANY other camera anyone would recommend I check out before I buy this? I'm probably looking at another month or so before I actually take the plunge.

Hello. I'm sixteen and I'm working on a screenplay for an indie film. I'm hoping to direct it sometime in the near future, but I'm deciding what my first camera should be. Is this camera the right choice? Or should I keep searching?

I need a professional camera with XLR inputs. Do you guys recommend this? Or should I get a DSLR instead? I want to stay around $1000 or less, but am interested to see what I can get in a $3k budget.
I am looking into the differences of this and the XF 100/105. Granted the price is the major difference but I want to produce commercials, music videos, wedding videos, and possibly some Indie films. I want to thank you for a very informative and very professional video here. It was great. Most review videos are very amateur and people look like they are reviewing something they just purchased and don't know how to use. Your vid is the most pro I have seen in a long time!
like this camera for it's compact size (have to wait till it comes out in Europe...) But there's one thing that bothers me: in all the shots of the XA10, the snow has no contrast, it's all white, no shadows. How come?
is there anything to add on to get a little more depth-of-field from the xa10? and what camera where yall using when it was not the xa10? I noticed on a shot at the 0:11 second mark there was some more depth. to the shot
@ZachDrakeVids The rest of the video was shot with the 5D Mark II, which created the shallow depth of field. The XA-10 can only give you shallow depth of field when shooting off the telephoto end.
@phez2000 Frivolous? Excuse me! This is a perfectly purposeful question. A car for that price would definitely have more technology than a camcorder, sorry but get your facts right buddy......
@sqadron2386 The XF100 is a better camera, unless you need the smaller camera, or your editing software does not support 4:2:2 files. The XA10, however is $1000 less.
@TheCameraStoreTV seeing as this would be my first professional camera, i would have to learn all the ins and outs and all of the technical jargon, so i think i will invest in the xa10 to start out with... also what type of equipment was the entire video shot with? standard camera microphone? shotgun? boom?
@sqadron2386 The Camera was shot with an Audio Technica Shotgun mic on the XA10. The speaking portions were shot with a 5D Mk II with an Audio Technica Lav recording into a Zoom H4n recorder. We also used a Cinevate Atlas 10 slider for any mobile shots.
@stefanhuang Here's the thing, you don't want "great color quality" straight out of the camcorder, you want something that can capture as Flat an image as is possible so it's easier to manipulate in post.
@ErnieCosmo Native 30p and 25p are not legit AVCHD rates. Say thanks to Panasonic and Sony who developed the spec. Panasonic offers 30p (and 25p in Europe) in its professional lineup, but packages it into either 720p60 (with 2:2 frame repeat) or into 1080i60 (with 2:2 field pulldown). They haven't thought it through in the beginning - first for Blu-ray, then for AVCHD - now everyone has to suffer.

does anybody know whether a rode ntg2 fits to this camera? or will it be seen partly?
96pnm 8 months ago
@96pnm Just tried it. The NTG-2 will not be in the frame as long as it is pushed back so the edge of the foam is against the mic holder.

what camera is that at 4:18?
wakaphwap 8 months ago
Video look good but do not have the poppy color that you get out of a Canon HDSLR, But HDSLR are not good for run and gun.

The XA10 seems very cool compared to the 5D markii

Do you know of any other high end camcorder(s) that allow displacement of the internal IR blocker? Thank you - Jennifer

MegaViking1000 9 months ago
like this camera for it's compact size (have to wait till it comes out in Europe...) But there's one thing that bothers me: in all the shots of the XA10, the snow has no contrast, it's all white, no shadows. How come?
evelknievel2000 9 months ago
@evelknievel2000 I think its a matter of the manuel settings. The exposure looked like it could be lowered a few notches which is definitely doable
phantomofopera91 8 months ago
is there anything to add on to get a little more depth-of-field from the xa10? and what camera where yall using when it was not the xa10? I noticed on a shot at the 0:11 second mark there was some more depth. to the shot
ZachDrakeVids 9 months ago
@ZachDrakeVids The rest of the video was shot with the 5D Mark II, which created the shallow depth of field. The XA-10 can only give you shallow depth of field when shooting off the telephoto end.
Jordan @ The Camera Store
TheCameraStoreTV 9 months ago
@TheCameraStoreTV is there any kind of attachment or lense swap to get a little bit more of a telephoto lense
ZachDrakeVids 9 months ago
@ZachDrakeVids There is a 58mm filter thread for attaching a teleconverter.

DANIELJORDANTOWERS 8 months ago
would you recommend this for a starter camera? my budget is less than 2k
IWTBFOY 9 months ago
@IWTBFOY this is a 2k camera. A good semi expensive camera to get is the rebel EOS T3.

Can someone tell me why on earth a camera can cost as much as a car? I mean there is no engine, it's just a lens and a few buttons and that's it.
malbert34 10 months ago
@malbert34 ...Also a car for that price has no technology! ...do not post frivolous comments!
phez2000 5 months ago
@phez2000 Frivolous? Excuse me! This is a perfectly purposeful question. A car for that price would definitely have more technology than a camcorder, sorry but get your facts right buddy......

Should I use the Canon XA10 or the Canon XF100? I am under the $20,000 dollar budget
cubeproduktion 10 months ago
@cubeproduktion For under $20,000 I would get 6 XF100s...
Jordan @ The Camera Store
TheCameraStoreTV 10 months ago
@TheCameraStoreTV but the price is alot different, i think he meant 2,000. isone worth that much more than the other.
hitthedeckstudios 9 months ago
@cubeproduktion 20,000? I wouldnt even buy anything in this class. you can get a movie camera that uses film and produce stuff hollywood does.
TheShootTruth10 10 months ago
would you recommend the xa10 over the xf100?
sqadron2386 10 months ago
@sqadron2386 The XF100 is a better camera, unless you need the smaller camera, or your editing software does not support 4:2:2 files. The XA10, however is $1000 less.
Jordan @ The Camera Store
TheCameraStoreTV 10 months ago
@TheCameraStoreTV seeing as this would be my first professional camera, i would have to learn all the ins and outs and all of the technical jargon, so i think i will invest in the xa10 to start out with... also what type of equipment was the entire video shot with? standard camera microphone? shotgun? boom?
sqadron2386 10 months ago
@sqadron2386 The Camera was shot with an Audio Technica Shotgun mic on the XA10. The speaking portions were shot with a 5D Mk II with an Audio Technica Lav recording into a Zoom H4n recorder. We also used a Cinevate Atlas 10 slider for any mobile shots.

@stefanhuang What drugs do you use?
phez2000 5 months ago
@stefanhuang Drugs much?
phez2000 5 months ago
@stefanhuang Here's the thing, you don't want "great color quality" straight out of the camcorder, you want something that can capture as Flat an image as is possible so it's easier to manipulate in post.

legends - just got the xf105 and your vid covering this helped the decision making process enormously - great job guys - thanks from NZ.
godslittlehelpa 10 months ago
@ErnieCosmo Native 30p and 25p are not legit AVCHD rates. Say thanks to Panasonic and Sony who developed the spec. Panasonic offers 30p (and 25p in Europe) in its professional lineup, but packages it into either 720p60 (with 2:2 frame repeat) or into 1080i60 (with 2:2 field pulldown). They haven't thought it through in the beginning - first for Blu-ray, then for AVCHD - now everyone has to suffer.
