Mazda got it's (only, and they raced several seasons in the WSC) race victory in 1991. 1991 was already a transitional year rules-wise because the new engine formula was set in stone in 1989/1990. Aussie touring car racing used to be great. 4 cylinder BMWs were up against turbo Skylines and all sorts of stuff. But the V8s weren't fast enough so they banned everything else.

stefan, the motor was superior but the young douche isn't able to comprehend how this magnificent work of art Mr. Wankel created could easily perform better. Less rotational mass and less mechanical movement will always go FTW. It's just quite simple. Now reliability is dependent on various factors and as simple as NA or Turbo. Its well know that turbo rotaries seem to have a shorter lifespan than an NA. Would you agree?
Never forget the 787 at winning at Le Mans - you could hear it all round the track at night. I went to support the jags but came back raving rotors - Love it
this car is the reason why I want to swap out my 13b motor in my Mazda RX8 for a 20b motor.. yes, i know its not the same (4 rotary engines in the 787b).. but its as close as i can get to a high performance rotary :)
@tomboneschevy I think if you slap a twin turbo (with +10psi) on the 13b MSP from the rx-8 (like you find on the FD and the 20b), you'll be getting pretty close to the 20b's power, without the huge cost of the engine swap :p

@darthjader08 Im not hating, anyone that drives a rotor will say the same, you dont get the feeling anywhere near as good as a supra, skyline, subaru, nothing is as smoothe, and for starters, you compare the NSX which if divided will easily get you 3 Fds. or 1 FD with enough work to be at comp level. there are Go fast bits avaliable to tend to the cooling issue. And besides that theres like 1 Rotor, to every 25 subies, supras, skylines, and nsxs. (maybe not so much nsx..)

It didn't get banned because it was the best rotary engine, they got banned because they didn't know how to approach the whole displacement issue, as due to its inherent design characteristics, a rotary engine is, in effect the exact same as a piston engine with 3x the displacement, FIA didn't know how to address that. Oh, and the Porsche 962 was a superior Le Mans car to the 787...not as cool, superior.

Out lasted all the Porsche at Lemans 24HR to win... Quad rotors were evaluated and found it could last another 24HR race.
Forza 3 didn't have it because it goes against their Porsche narrative.

This car weights only 830 kilos has 870 horses. Modern LeMans cars only have low 800s hp and are over 900 kilos! This is the REAL CAR!

this car is the reason why I want to swap out my 13b motor in my Mazda RX8 for a 20b motor.. yes, i know its not the same (4 rotary engines in the 787b).. but its as close as i can get to a high performance rotary :)

@tomboneschevy I think if you slap a twin turbo (with +10psi) on the 13b MSP from the rx-8 (like you find on the FD and the 20b), you'll be getting pretty close to the 20b's power, without the huge cost of the engine swap :p

The 787B is probably the most important Japanese racing car ever, because it is the only Japanese car to ever win the 24 Heures Du Mans - the Le Mans 24 hour race, which it did in 1991. This proved to the world that the Japanese can compete at the highest level of motorsports - and win (because the Le Mans in that era was arguably even more important and mad than the Formula 1). The mighty Mazda's technicians famously said after winning the race that it could easily go for another 24 hours......

The ONLY reason the Wenkel makes a good racing engine is a) its dimensions, and b) they can rebuild the engine before every race.

@darthjader08 ok... its a RACE CAR, not an every day driver.... so rebuilding an engine before a race is common! have you ever watched Nascar or GT races? they swap engines hours before a race. As far as the overheating issues go; overheating after 48 HOURS IS UNDERSTANDABLE!! every car has its issues plus Le Mans officials evaluated the car and determined that engine could have easily gone another 24 hours!!!

@will444654654 You missed the part where I said that I would use a rotary if I were racing in a competition in which engine displacement, but not power was restricted. I would NOT use it as a daily driver, for rally racing, or any other amateur racing competition. The Rotaries have more overheating issues than any other engine type. I like them, they're cool...but they're nowhere near what every fanboi out there touts them as.

@sof1map Well...if that's true...then why are the most durable engines from Honda? Why do Skylines, Evo's, Subaru's, and Supra's always beat the RX-7's? Why is the most successfully highest performance normal production car, to come out of Japan a Honda NSX (with higher potential STREET LEGAL power output being nearly 1/3 more than any rotary)? Why are RX-7's the 4th most commonly used car in rally racing and not the first?

@darthjader08 Im not hating, anyone that drives a rotor will say the same, you dont get the feeling anywhere near as good as a supra, skyline, subaru, nothing is as smoothe, and for starters, you compare the NSX which if divided will easily get you 3 Fds. or 1 FD with enough work to be at comp level. there are Go fast bits avaliable to tend to the cooling issue. And besides that theres like 1 Rotor, to every 25 subies, supras, skylines, and nsxs. (maybe not so much nsx..)

@will444654654 Uh, yeah, I did say that I would use a rotary if displacement were limited. It didn't get banned because it was the best rotary engine, they got banned because they didn't know how to approach the whole displacement issue, as due to its inherent design characteristics, a rotary engine is, in effect the exact same as a piston engine with 3x the displacement, FIA didn't know how to address that. Oh, and the Porsche 962 was a superior Le Mans car to the 787...not as cool, superior.
