  • Still....depressing music...

  • @rihannalover93 but then there is the finale rondo which is one of the happiest movements in classical music.

  • @jin12345678 Strange, what I am hearing is laughter through tears ,even in this movement....

  • ahhhh the tympani at 0:30, followed by that inspired horn lick that comes out of nowhere

  • reinhold friedrich is THE BEST principal trumpet player of any orchestra that ever exited. sorry bud herseth...

  • @now5230 Strong words indeed. I think that you'd have a hard time convincing many people with this statement.

  • The cymbal crash at 1:21 is the best part ... otherwise, the performance is so- so. Whats's better? Zubin Mehta LA Phil 1976 is the best (tho' the recording engineers of that excellent performance did not record that cymbal crash loud enough). Other (better-than-Abbado) performances of Mahler 5 are: Solti/CSO/1970 and Levine/Philadelphia/1977.

  • My dad had the great experience of working under Abbado a few times with the CSO, including a great performance of Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony.

  • Better than Chicago and their silly way of playing Mahler (Solti).

  • @GregHales false

  • @Benefactors true

  • LOVE 0:32 !!!

  • Abbado is Mahler's man.

  • I LOVE THIS

  • Es lebe die Freiheit!

    Es lebe Claudio Abbado!

  • It does not matter where is the conductor from, if matters if his technique is good enough , Abbado is a masterpiece a great Maestro indeed!

  • That one "idiot", guys, had opinions different from your own. Respect it... Even if the whole world thinks something is great or true, there is always going to be someone with a different way of thinking. Kind of like Galileo.

  • This is actually the first version of Mahler's fifth that I heard. And I've since become an avid Mahlerian - and still this is far and away the best I've heard of the 5th. Impeccable!

  • Euroarts when will be available in blu-ray 2pcm 24bits, with introduction - Mahler anniversary - ,please Medici tv - Mahler symphony 7 too !!!!!!!!!

  • who is that idiot who can wote "dislike" to a masterpiece, like this??...:(

  • @Saanyooo He or she probably missed the button

  • @Saanyooo Sadly, the world is full of such idiots. I could no more say I disliked this symphony than I could say I dislike my left arm.

  • ONE of the GREATESTS MAHLERIAN ... CLAUDIO ABBADO ! Almost all recordings of Mahler's symphonies are stunning & unparalleled ! Bravo Maestro !

    BRAVO !

  • reinhold friedrich!!! alter schwan!

  • @1337evan, when I was in 19 yrs old, I played 2nd violin in the Chicago Civic Orchestra, (which is an amateur training orchestra whose members often advance to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and had the opportunity to be conducted the Mahler's 5th by Claudio Abbado. He didn't make hardly any stops, just conducted all the way through. I remember he had wide swinging arms in his conducting which was dramatic. I don't know if he was a magical experience .but he had a thick Italian accent

  • Abbado.. one of the bests..

  • 这是我听过的最热血沸腾的版本 圆号和小号吹出了乐曲的高潮

  • Epic trumpet playing in this performance

  • does anyone have the link to the first half of this performance? i cant find it anymore

  • oboe player EPIC SOLO at 1:52, lol.

humor aside, this is one of the best performances of Mahler I've seen.

  • but the thing in the video is that the bass drum part cannot be heard

  • this is definitely one of my favorite recordings on youtube along w/ the chicago and berlin versions

  • his recording with the berlin phil is even better than this! but this is still phenomenal! :)

  • Absolutely stunning, bravo, maestro Abbado.

  • Abbado is one of the greatest conducters......

  • I absolutely love lucerne, and also Reinhold on solo trumpet!, brilliant!

  • One of my life long dreams is to be conducted by Maestro Abbado, playing Mahler 5... or any Mahler symphony for that matter.

  • @1337evan me too!

  • stunning!
