hey...am plannin 2 buy a 2nd hand yamaha r1 2007...its gonna be my 1st bike...is it good 4 a beginner?...or should i opt for a 2nd hand 2008 ktm rc8?...am 18 n 170 cm n weigh 70 kg tall so which 1 do you prefer 4 me?...i chose r1 coz it has a passenger seat...
I have a 2007 R6, and Ive noticed (fairly new rider) that it does not turn as easily as my ninja 250. Its like the tires grip the road and want to turn against where I want it to go. Does that sound right of this sport bike? Do you notice a difference with turning?
dude listen if you want to really help you need to get a wind screen for you audio mic and them have the mic 2 hand lengths from you cheen okey dude.......
Awesome video. My biggest fear when first riding was making a right turn leaving my driveway lol. Believe it or not. I would just always go out too wide. But this video would have answered all my questions!
Interesting exercise to try in a large empty parking lot is to start out at really slow speeds (<10mph) and initiate a turn. As you have the bike leaned over, gradually add throttle and noticed what happens to the steering as you attempt to keep the same lean angle and accelerate.
@Killer135747 When you're going really really slow and you're moving the bars back and forth to keep your balance, you're actually counter-steering. So, no. But, I'm sure some people will argue with that. The effects are definitely easier to notice at higher speeds, though.
@krayziesensei Counter-steer doesn't take effect until about 10-15mph, but at extremely slow speeds (like 1-2mph) you'll be flipping the bars side-to-side to balance. If you watch the video, you'll notice you're not counter-steering during those turns (~8mph, steering returns to the right as you complete the turn). You're pulling in on the left to go left. At higher speeds, you'll push left to go left (counter-steering).
@krayziesensei So do you continue to counter steer all the way through the turn? Example: if I'm making a left turn I would turn slightly to the right and continue to do so until I've completed said turn. Is that correct?
@Isaacbolly No, you only counter-steer to initiate the lean. If you need to lean more mid-corner, than you can counter-steer again to get more lean.
At higher speeds the bike basically steers itself (that's why they say ride instead of drive with bikes), the only time it really needs active input from you is when you change direction (lean).
@krayziesensei So what's getting me out of the left turn? Do I hold the lean (counter steer) until i'm out of the turn? In other words, what direction does the front wheel need to turn in mid corner?
this is what I was missing! a how to balance your body in slow turns instruction. thanks mate! its more important than a how to slide turn at 150km/h on a GP circle....
@colosistvan Thanks!!! There are a lot of videos out there of people just showing-off instead of actually trying to teach something...it's douchebaggery at its worst.
@rsx123 You can/do counter-steer to get the bike to lean, just to initiate the turn, then steer like normal. You counter-steer even when riding a pedal bike, but it's very subtle and not as noticeable.
Great video krayziesensei! This is exactly how they teach it in the MSF course.
@pacrat90 I took them off and put a pair of bar-end mirrors on. It cleans up the look of the bike, I think. I couldn't see anything but my elbows in the stock ones, anyway...
@MrWenxie I adjusted the mirrors as much as I could and the only way I could see out of the mirrors is if I turned to the side. I have broader shoulders than a normal person, maybe...
I have to agree with you, I have wide shoulders and there simply is no way to see anything but elbows and the outer 1" is visible, basically the next lanes. Have to bend my elbows in to peek around behind me, completely useless. Add some gear with elbow pads and there really isnt anything in view. Got a ticket from a cop saying I ran from him although I didnt go far, and I didnt go more than 15 over on a liter bike. Ridiculous.
@FreedomisHistory Holy $h!t!!!!! He gave you a ticket for evading!!! You should get a lawyer if you can. You can definitely argue that you could not see behind you. You should be able to get that dismissed easy. Good luck. Sportbike riders are definitely targeted and, dare I say, stereotyped by the police.
Good, I bet there are a lot of riders that could not make slow speed turns without almost dropping their bikes, and it's something everyone that rides IMO should be good at doing. Just a note, once you drop below 10mph there is a point depending on bike where you don't countersteer anymore to turn because the speeds are just too slow, you just turn the bars in the direction you want to turn.
Some good points, nice vid! It's a great topic to me as my front wheel hit some road edge gravel a few months ago on a U-Turn and boom. Frame sliders rock! I sometimes practice on a deserted parking lot using the marker lines and making progressively smaller radius turns.
@Moosepiesandwich You're not alone my friend. A lot of bikers have fallen victim to loose gravel. Good tip on practicing in a parking lot. When I bought my first bike, I went straight to an abandoned parking lot to practice and went straight from there to take my skills test.
47 years old an took a safety course on street riding . Counter Balancing was one of the terms used in the class . I rode dirt bikes for four years but yea I learn new stuff in the street class . Thanks for the info . Also Why did you choose the bike that you have . ? I have went to dealers an sat on many different bikes an still not sure what I want .
@Hybrid5226 Thanks for your comment! I learned a lot during my MSF course too. Everything in this vid is probably stuff that has been basically regurgitated from that class. I chose this bike based on the way I wanted to ride. I LOVE hitting the twisties (even if I'm not the best rider yet) and having a light bike with the right ergos makes it a little more effortless to get what you want out of a turn.
@krayziesensei BUT it is definitely not as comfortable as my last bike and sometimes I do regret the trade. I guess I'll just have to buy my old bike back. Hhhmmm....
Finally you get another vid up. Hey dude, October is my last month of riding before the bike goes into a storage garage. Let me know if you want to do some riding.

Doesn't counter-steer take effect at speeds >10 m/ph (12-15 Km/ph) ?
