  • The south shall rise again!

  • Can't listen to this version without immediately having to wash it down with the one Levon sang at The Last Waltz.

  • I'm surprised Lawrence Welk even allowed this song on his show to be sung. Then again,he permitted One Toke Over The Line, completely oblivious to the lyrical content.

  • Robbie Robertson heaqrd this and went right outside to practice rolling over in his grave.

  • Is this song racist?

  • not only did he miss the lyrics Til stonemans calvalry came and tore up the tracks again" but he said "i took the train to richmond it fell" it says" by may the 10th richmond had fell" he said " i drove on the Danville train" it says "i served on the Danville train"

he ripped the heart and soul out of this song, truly one of the greatest story songs ever written! great job.....Robbie Robertson!

  • WHY SO SERIOUS?

  • all jokes aside.... lawrence welk had some good looking pussy on his show. just sayin.

  • @beerhead79 ... maybe, but considering this was an era of mini-skirts and free love ..

  • The night the drove Old Down - Ka-pow - holy Confederate flag Batman

  • i LOVE THE DRESSES THEY WORE.

  • Like Joan Baez, he’s playing the wrong chords and singing the wrong lyrics. Can’t anyone do this song properly?

  • @1:19 "Boom, boom, boom, boomba-boomba boom..." Very smooth...

  • Awful, ,it is not a happy song

  • He skipped the whole second verse...seems like he was deliberately trying to (or being forced to) avoid saying Lee or Stoneman's name. This is a really candy-coated version of this song....although then again it IS the Lawrence Welk show.

  • best male singer on show

  • Batman?

  • Sounds real nice

  • The upright bass sounds great !!!

That was the only nice thing I could think of the say about the captivating performance.

  • I'll bet Levon Helm was mighty proud when he saw this.

BTW, Adam West sings better than Telly Savalis IMHO

  • This is the definitive version of this song. Robbie Robertson stole it from Clay.

  • What the F*ck? Robbie wrote it and The Band performed it

  • @LocalRailfan Bob Dylan wrote it bro. It was a different version than what we're used to, but he penned out the orriginal lyrics.

  • @rock1the1arts100 Check your facts, bro.

  • It was written by Robbie Robertson.

  • Wow, Adam West can play guitar and sang! Why didn't he do that on the Batman tv show?

  • @robbatkinson666 That's NOT Adam West!

  • noone can touch levon!!!!..noone...the only band that comes close in the black crowes

  • this vershion is gay the band vershion is 1000 times better

  • oh dear

  • Oh, crap. Watch out Levon Helm, you've got competion.

  • The South should have won! The new civil war is coming in about 8 years.

  • BAHAHAHA

  • Tell me when and where Ill be there

  • If so, most likely it will be over language, not race.

  • Dude, I hear that alot. Jon Titer said so. He was a space traveler...I see revolution in the US real so.

  • soon*

  • In my past life I fought for the South in the Civil war, needless to say, I had my rebel-standing-ass kicked six ways from Sunday.

  • IT'S A CRYING SHAME SOME OF YOU FIND IT NECESSARY TO VENT YOU POLITICAL AND RACIAL VIEWS AND OPINIONS INSTEAD OF JUST ENJOYING THE SINGERS AND ALL THE SONGS THEY DO!

i also have political and racial views but i don't think this is the time or place.

  • Speaking for the some of the Brothas , We/I would like to propose that the name of the song be changed to "Thank Goodness They Drove Old Dixie Down", also change the lyrics to " and the slaves were saying ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha,ha-ha, ha" !!! No offense to Clay Hart, just the song.

  • Speaking as a white person, i have no Southern relatives.

And i think the south got exactly what they deserved. They needed to be taught a lesson.

  • poodtang1 your not white and and your not southern your a traitor to your people if your are.

ahdisag your another black loser who is proped up by liberal nothern and Califronia faggots out in Hollywood once the North collapses you gay black ass will be handed including your mut of a president.

  • Just what was the lesson they were taught?

  • gdqqps:

    1) The Federal government is bigger then the sum of it's parts.

    2) don't challenge someone who's bigger then you

    3) pick your fights wisely

  • 4) Always wear clean underwear.

That is the biggest lesson I learned from the Civil War.

  • phrydoom:

    5) beef has more protein then pork

The North was fead on mostly beef the South on mostly pork.

  • "..so much cavalry came..." in this version is incorrect lyric. The song was written as "when Stoneman's cavalry came.."

  • How much cavalry?

  • he should remember the lyrics, you know, so the song actually makes sense. terrible version

  • clay is such a great singer, he was a fave of mine on the show , he does a good job on thi s tune one of my faves from joan baeaz

  • love this version.
