And you know what? I'm sure the 216 million people who gained access to clean water wells don't feel like you're wasting your time or destroying the economy.
Just a quick encouragement to those who have been giving in hopes that they are making a change: I started helping out with the 1000 Wells Project at Davis in 2008. The statistics back then were that every 8 seconds someone dies due to a lack of clean water, and that there were 1.1 billion people in the world who lacked it. It is now 2011, and though it seems like a small change, the statistic is now every 15 seconds someone dies due to lack of clean water, and 884 million people lack it.
Don't worry, Advent Conspiracy or not, people are figuring it out. We've been sold a bill of goods--a lie called the American dream. It's infinite consumerism, well, until you reach a certain age or have a certain experience & then, voila! You see the light: that US wealth & prosperity is & always has been built on the back of genocide (first the Indians, then...), slavery (first the Indians, then the Africans, then...), war, etc. The world has seen the light. End US imperialism. David Brookbank
@Arroyoribera I think a part of the problem is that our schools are still teaching industrial age thinking: get good grades, go to college, get a good job that... wont last your entire lifetime. Oh and by the way generation y you get to work forever because you will have huge amounts of student loan debt, a degree that secures you practically nothing, and there will soon be no more social security. Shouldn't our schools teach innovation for the information age?
@NikeshalovesCasey The sad thing is most people don't belive that the world isnt how they have thought it was their whole life. People don't believe we are living in the dawn of a new age... but if we were still in the industrial age all of our factories would not be overseas. (They are begining their industrial age.) I think we should be excited for where we are... but nobody is aware.
I can not believe people would even argue that it "would have a negative impact on our economy"! That is completely outrageous! People (most likely those people who said that it hurts our economy) are always saying "oh those poor kids in Africa". Well now it's your chance to help them! How about instead you get ONE less gift this year and give it to the poor, broken, and needy.
Instead of that new iPod that money can be used to provide a whole entire meal for a family in need!!
On the ISS right now above our heads they are drinking purified urine with the hopes to create a water recycler. For LESS than 1% of YOUR tax dollars - NASA is on the verge of breaking through...and yet NASA is on the chopping block each year. Let's begin spending the money we DO have in the right places. Let's start by switching the DoD budget with NASA for just one year....
The only thing THAT WILL KILL THE ECONOMY IS THE ADVENT CONSPIRACY. BECAUSE THE CHURCH IS WRONGLY TELLING US HOW TO SPEND OUR MONEY THAT DOESN'T EVEN BELONG TO THE CHURCH. THAT IS OUT OF LINE ON THE PART OF THE CHURCH
@Timscott72 so your saying that spending $10 dollars less per year and giving it away and saving thousand of lives will kill the ecomomy? for you $10 will do nothing, but fore someone without clean water it literally is the difference between life and death. i dare you to give a mere $10 to someone in need, and if it doesn't feel good, i PERSONALLY will come to your house and give you back your $10.
Beside there is more to it than just throwing 10 billion dollar and hoping world hunger ( or clean water in this case) will be solved.
the problem is that even if we donated 10 billion dollars to a third world country chance are that some warlord or corrupt goverment officall would get the money - The resaon there is poverty isnt because of a lack of money
It doesn't matter your religion. Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Atheist, all are welcome to celebrate Christmas Commercially.
And all of us are guilty for not giving enough to that old person with no family shivering alone during the winter, or that kid with no toys and only dirt to play in.
We could all benefit from this video. We shouldn't stop spending money on great gifts, but maybe set a tiny bit more aside for a charity. It would help the world so much if everyone did it.
@Leozodiac Same here. I think this is a wonderful message. You don't have to be a christian to be charitable. I'm going to spread this message to my friends and family, even thought they know I'm an atheist, I think they will get the point.
Alas...this video still remains useless except for its shock value. Not once in this video does it ever address the CAUSES of these problems. You can't treat an illness by fighting its symptoms one at a time.
Of course each individual is responsible for their own complacency within this system, but the peasants alone and disorganized cannot stop the "machine" at work here; people need to stand up and fight the "masters" of we, the slaves, and their "dogs" that so readily do their bidding.
@villainsrule -Yes we have all been complacent. What are the causes? I'm not sure they need to be addressed here. I'm sure we all have our own ideas about that. I think the point of this video is to fight back against mainstream commercialism without pointing fingers.
@villainsrule The purpose of this video IS to shock...to make people aware, to make them think. Once you get the IDEA down then you can do something about it. It's not useless; exposure is the first step
I stand by original statement: you can't treat an illness by fighting its symptoms one at a time. If you can honestly change the consciousness of humanity by merely telling them to focus on love and not money, then go for it...prove me wrong. This video has had millions of hits in its original upload and yet still no change.
But since I'm a realist, I know you can't win this fight without taking down the powers that be in this world.
How about treating the symptom AND the causes? Maybe the problem is that we need a better boat, but that doesn't mean we can't throw drowning people a line. As we do, we'll get a lot of people to pay attention to the need for more.
By the way, "millions of views and no change" isn't true. ONE million views, and as a result, about 350 communities have clean water (that's a quarter million people). Watch the most recent video on my profile to see one.
Small, small victories at best. You won't win the war like this. I'll give you credit for trying, but being an optimist will only get you so far. If you honestly believe efforts like this will allow the starving and thirsty of this world to have better lives, then godspeed.Take down the "powers that be" in this world and you may be in business. Just keep this fact in mind: for all of your good intentions, there will always be someone out there trying to capitalize on your progress.
Phraseling, you're too old to be this naive. But whatever helps you feel better about yourself. Do you have any idea how much the US spends on the military each year? Forget Christmas, if we stopped pointless wars and misused funding for hurting people and focused it on helping then that would be a real accomplishment. But as I said before, the powers that be on this planet will never let you succeed. You're not the first to try this...
Isa, Prophet Jesus was a wonderful messenger from God, please Muslims don't get caught in consumerism as well! (Eid, and day to day living) Prophet Muhammad even said after getting a message from Angel Gabriel that the worst of all places is the marketplace! and yes that means the mall, grocery store, car dealership, coat shop, etc. Stop becoming obsessed with a material good, get obsessed with the Truth.
does a material object truly make you a better person? the most spiritually rich people i have met are poor in material things. The saints that i know about have lived off of God alone, in which God wills everything, so if you are to die, you are to die, with or without those material things.
Can't we get back to Christ in Christmas? That's what I think is really important. People don't understand Santa Clause is just another name for Saint Nicholas (with a couple letters taken out), and giving gifts to the poor.
A bunch of people don't understand what trees, wreathes, candy canes, stars, lights, and so on symbolize. Heck, even the 12 Days of Christmas deals with religious things. Are parents telling their kids about the wisemen giving gifts to Jesus?
It is great to help people get clean and not die. This is absolutely true. However, a problem I have with this idea is that if the stores lose all this money, we lose even more jobs everywhere. Stores will have to shut down!!
I do agree that Christmas should be about Christ, and not just about spending tons of money, but at the same time, how many people would not have a home (because they got fired) if 64 billion is yanked out of stores? Stores are hurting already.
Hi, I'm one of those mislead crazy christians. My daughter, 18 came home from church today and played this for me. I thought it was awesome for more reasons than clean water. I thought it was a great reminder that Christmas has become for our family about Mac book pro's, I phones (3Gs), True Religion jeans and fancy decorations (that's me) This video made me think about how empty those things are once you have them . . . we have all of them now,
We just want more! see next comment.. out of space

You guys are still wack jobs with a different package!! Clean water for third-world countries, please!!! The whiteman is the worst thing to happen to third-world nations.Hell,go dig wells in CA and GA!!
yes the point is to help pplz in need. for many of us [individually] , we should be focusing on pplz in America and help the homeless and poor. However as an organization (ex. church), we should help pplz in third world countries because as individuals, we don't have access to help them (third world countries).
our very own churches spend millions of dollars on their christmas productions depicting a historically inaccurate representation of Jesus's birth... but hey, if it boosts their rededication quota for the year i guess its worth it.
Tim and Drew - If from your tower of mistaken righteousness across the street of "Any Church, USA", you would actually check out the Advent Cospiracy you would find out it is about saving lives. Water born disease is the #1 cause of death in the World. What a sad discovery. I will be handing out coupons this year that represent a donation, in that person's name, toward clean water. Maybe you could stow your ill placed anger awhile and use that energy to help.
If you took to time to read my comment you would see im actually agreeing with advent. Im supporting the cause and sharing my frustration that churches would rather spend money on TV's than actual humans who are suffering.
Please read before you comment in such an insulting manner.
please do not use your church to stereotype all the churches in america. there are those who depict accurate representation of Jesus' birth and there are those who do not.
and christmas should not be the booster to rededicate quota for the year. if it does, then you need to find a better church.
ah. that is true. Church should refer to the body/group of Christians who come together to worship Christ. It should not refer to the building that which they worship in.
OMG! Beautiful!....Christmas should definetly be about this again...not Black Fridays. We Literally don't do gifts at all...we dont even have a tree anymore. <3
i will totally agree with you Andrewwb7. bout pushing this video...they arnt...but everyone needs 2 spread the word. that is pathetic about chrisTmas. people are dying and AMERICANS are spending there money on stupid gifts that wont last as long as a human life. PEOPLE ARE SO SELF ABSORBED. as well as i am.
it was playing at my church...and my church is totally involved in these types of things. if u want to tlk bout it go 2 my channel and i can make a real discussion.
dude u guys have such a bad outlook on this video...grrr. look at what the world is turnning to today i m almost 17 and this video is supposed to make u think and...
Acutally it's NOT our fault the economy is failing (see fanny mae and freddy mac videos). The responisibility is partly those who are greedy; poor use of money and others for their lack of knowledge (bad choices w/cash. Yeah if we spend more then the economy will recover. Take an econ course you'll understand more....we do need to help out other countries if we don't then things like WW2 can happen. People sometimes don't pay attention to the past so they don't know how to deal with the future.
I belong to no church, I'm self ordained. I'm not happy about it, it's just not my time to choose. However, as I lie in bed each night I lose countless hours of sleep troubling myself with the worries of the world. I've told my significant other (or anbody who would listen since I was 7) that I'm here to do really great things. I've literally ALWAYS known that about myself. This video help put a lot in perspective... Thank you for this!! Kyraiyne~!!
"What if Christmas became a world-changing event... ... again". Just think about that... w/ only a FRACTION of wut we spend on gifts that'll b exchanged fo' sumthin else anyway (n' i've got nuttin against gift-giving, i'm jus sayin) we can solve one of the most vital issues that face this world...Imagine wut else we could do.
curious how the western world can snap a political finger to find 700 billion for wall street and who know how much for the war and who knows how much for the auto industry coming up, but they cant get their act together to find 10 billion dollars to provide water for the WORLD? Shameful.
wow. Great point. But although u bring up a valid argument, i kno i can't look at our gov't and others regardin da clean water issue w/o lookin at myself, accountability ya kno? I'm not sayin i could have solvd it myself, but i know if my church and other churches put up an effort, more could b accomplished. "We must first become the change we wish to see" Ghandi. And as Jesus said "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye ?"
Don't be ridiculous. My point is we as a people endorse a political and economic environment that has little to no respect our concern for human life. Does the phrase "We the people" ring a bell? We are the government you fool.
By the way -- that plank I'm looking at is in all our eyes.
And, I always find it ironic when a capitalist prays.
alright, alright. My bad man, didn't mean to evoke such emotion, jus wanted to share a diff't perspective. I see ur point, no need to b so harsh tho. Merry Christmas n' God Bless...seriously i say/type that in all sincerity.

I like the message. But since saving lives on a global scale only hurts the environment and thus, the human race as a whole, that money would be better off going towards causes which increase the sustainability of our life on this little planet.
So drilling wells and providing fresh water so people can survive and not die of things like Dengue fever? Apparently you need to go without a shower, clean drinking water and a computer for a month and see what you feel is right
yeah like saving people who dont drive cars you fucking idiot. By ur logic it's we westerners that are the NON SUSTAINABLE life on our "little planet" Fucking Tard.
Great video I wish more people thought like that, the WORLD would be a better place. Yes I know the economy is in trouble blah blah blah, but there are real people out there with real problems like starvation, not having clean water, no homes, ect... Great video though :)
You are taking such a simple concept and shoving the government up its butt. The point of this video is tell you our era is very dependent on consumerism. We dont need all the stuff we buy yet we buy it anyway. If we wanted to spend money that bad, we would give it to someone who actually NEEDS it. So dont go sticking the economy failing or the US government in here...because its not their fault our economy is failing its OURS!
really? so you would rather innocent people die because of lack of clean water over a tight budget xmas shopping for useless gifts even when your budget is still pretty high??? I think your argument is just a little more than selfish, just a little bit. :(
Instead of buying my friends Christmas gifts I paid for a child to go to primary school for a year, and also to help Children in Crisis and for a "Gaurdian of Hope". Go to the CBM (Canadian Baptist Ministries) "Sharing Way" Website to help. (Or through world vision, whatever's clever! :P)
Exactly my point. And I think some people need a bit of an awakening of what other people's living conditions are really like compared to their own comfy living spaces.
Astonishing. There is really a debate going on in these comments as to whether our economy is more important that clean water? Really? You really thing that if we spent 1% less the economy would collapse? you watch too much TV.
And I think it would be worth our economy collapsing to give every person on the planet clean water. But that's just me.
So you'd rather give up all of your possessions, not be able to afford food, see every single person in poverty fighting to survive, and countries overtaken by warlords if it meant everyone having clean water? Because that's what happens in countries where the economy is non-exsistent (ie. plenty of African nations). Just for kicks and giggles, how old exactly are you.
Also, a significant drop in holliday spending would lead to decreased confidence on the stock market, which is the big bad part
I honestly don't think there would be a significant drop in holiday spending. There might be a slight one, but how much damage could that really do? And I guess you're right with the countries with no economy but I don't think that spending slightly less on christmas gifts would bring that numerous and terrible of events.
economists were terribly concerned about even a 2 or 3% dropoff in holiday spending because investors were counting on this season to help out the retail stores. If there was a significant decline (like this video is suggesting, whether you agree with it or not) then stocks would tank because of that decrease in confidence and a number of retail giants would probably go under. If stocks tank here, they tank everywhere and we're screwed. Unfortunately, that's the effect of a globalized economy
Yeah, that's what happens in countries without any sort of infrastructure when the economy fails, you're right. In our country, even during the great depression, it never got that bad.
I appreciate your sarcasm. I'm 28.
Less confidence in the stock market? Is that even possible? Who exactly is trusting in the stock market at this point? It's like a 15 year old girl throwing a temper tantrum because she can't get the pink dress for the prom. Real stable.
So, are you proposing do this and then engage in another world war to get us out of the depression, because that's pretty much the only reason we got out of the first one.
There can always be less. Hell, right now the Dow is up over 9,000. Also, the fact that you're joking about it's lack of stability really goes to drive home my point, so thank you for saving me the words.
But the economy is unstable, so why should we be trusting it? Shouldn't we be trying to help other people around the world instead of sitting here, and doing nothing except hoping our economy doesn't fail?
Yes, the economy is unstable, which is exactly why we can't stop spending. Then it wouldn't be unstable, it would just be dropping like an anvil. It's great to help other people but most people do that through money, and if the economy tanks, people won't have the money to help. Believe me, this would come around to bite everyone right in the butt in the end.
But what if the economny tanks despite everyone still spending? Then there's no way to help people. We should help them while we have the money to help, becuase money (obviously) is a fleeting thing and nobody knows what's going to happen in the future. Trusting in God and doing what He wants us to do is the best thing to do at the present. The future is up to Him.
Then, nothing we do matters. If the future is up to god completely, then giving charity really doesn't matter because anything that happens is up to God. Or maybe people have a hand in it, maybe god gave us that ability. Otherwise, nothing we do matters and therefor mankind would be pointless.
What you're proposing is to give up hope because someday there could possibly be another depression. What if god wants us to make responsible decisions that help everyone in the long run?
It's all confusing but I believe that God gives us the ability to have a hand in things. But the future is still in His hands. What we do does matter, otherwise there would be no point in giving, or missions or anything. Which, there is most definatly a point.
And I'm not proposing to give up hope. I'm saying we should put our hope in something so much more worth while than an economy. We should put our hope, in God. Because in the end, what we do for Him is all that matters.
The only thing that is going to kill our economy in America is the government continuing to try and "help" the process. What makes the American economy distinct in the history of the world is that it is a free market economy with minimal government intrusion. That's what has enabled brilliant business people like Sam Walton, Steve Jobs, and Warren Buffet to make their millions.
The news media would have you believe the economy is going to tank. The wal-mart parking lot begs to differ.
Why does not spending as much automatically mean economic disaster? I'll be honest, I don't know much about the economy or how it works, but I trust God. I believe that no matter what happens, even if I end up on the street with nothing, he will provide and thats all that matters. We shouldn't depend on the unreliability of an economy.
Because tons of people rely on this time of year. Retail stores are already at the brink of collapse and this is the only time of year where they can actually count on going into the black. If that goes away, stores go under and tons of people's jobs are lost when stores cut back, and then other businesses are negatively effected by the loss of their jobs indirectly. The worst possible thing to do right now is not spend and again, you'd probably be very different if you were on the street.
Ok, I understand that, but still, it's not like they want people to not spend at all, only cut back on Christmas spending a little. And to be honest, even if some people did just that, there are so many people out there who wouldn't. And they would spend just as much or more than before. So I don't think cutting back a little for some people would make for economic disaster.
But the whole point of this is saying spend a lot less on gifts and instead put that to things like charity and do it on a large scale. That would be terrible. Now if a small amount of people choose to spend less and give more, that's great, but on a large scale, as this is suggesting, where people spend very little, it would be one of the most catastrophic economic events in our country and world's history.
It's not saying that you should spend a lot less, it's saying either reduce the amount you spend on gifts or give more meaningful less expensive gifts, like things that you make. Which would still take money to buy the supplies to make those gifts. It is suggesting a large scale of people, but I think that the real thing is to try and get the Christians who would actually spend less, to be aware of the other things they could do.
The idea to put forward is to significantly cut holliday spending. Now that may not be your idea, but you can't argue that this is not what the video is suggesting. It's right there.
That would be so terrible for the economy. Tons of people working in retail (mostly the lower class) would lose their jobs if people stopped spending tons of money during the holidays and we'd end up having tons more poor, jobless, homeless people. Why would you ever wish something like this?
how is this judging? I think it is a completely and totally absurd and ridiculous idea, but how exactly is it judging. I never judged anyone, I just pointed out why it would probably run us into another great depression and would be truly awful to a huge portion of american society, but not judging.
Judgment in thinking only of the U.S. this season. AC is not asking to stop spending "tons" of money. It's talking about those gifts people buy that are crap anyway - the sweater you know she'll hate, the unneeded toy. Buy something truly special for a loved one; that's fine. But if you're getting something for the sake of getting a gift, it's wasted money. There are people who need true help, not another possession. Besides, even in recession, U.S. topped what we spent last year in sales!
Judgment in thinking only of the US? Did that make any sense to you?
As far as your point, that is exactly what I'm talking about. We were incredibly worried about a 2 or 3% drop in sales this season because of the effect it might have. So if this happened, we'd see a much bigger effect. I'm sorry, but I just don't see how plunging the U.S. into another great depression by asking consumers to stop spending money is a good thing? Lost jobs, foreclosures. I'm all for charity, but this is crazy
But crazy is what Jesus wants us to be. We shouldn't have so much faith and trust in the economy because no matter what happens with that, God will always be with us. He's the one we should put our trust in. Money and material things won't bring happiness. God and giving and those types of things bring happiness. I understand your point, but in my opinion, it doesn't matter. Because God will always provide us with what we need.
Yes, that's great sentiment when you have a job, a home, etc. But it seems awful narrow-sighted when we're talking about something that would cause millions and millions of people to lose their jobs, homes, kids to not be able to get educations, families who won't be able to feed their children because of their lost jobs, and this wouldn't just happen in the U.S. A depression in this country would cause every market to tank and problems everywhere. Very nice thought, but completely unrealistic.
But think of all the people around the world who already don't have jobs and houses. They are the people we are trying to help with something like this. I think we're being narrow-sighted by not wanting to help and only worrying about our problems. And like DJWidget said before, they aren't saying don't spend money at all, just not as much. Because spending just a little less money, and giving it to a good cause could help so much more than an unneeded gift.
So the idea is that we shouldn't spend as much, so that instead of having all the people currently in poverty in that situation, we can add millions more to that situation and take away the wealth from a lot of people who would give charity in the future. Again, nice sentiment, but whoever thought this up needs to head over to the local university and take a freshman-level economics class.
Why does not spending as much automatically mean economic disaster? I'll be honest, I don't know much about the economy or how it works, but I trust God. I believe that no matter what happens, even if I end up on the street with nothing, he will provide and thats all that matters. We shouldn't depend on the unreliability of an economy.
for the past 3 or so weeks they have been playing it at my church and it really gets to me...it has a greatt message to it...thanks for putting this up...=D
it is so wonderful to serve & truly bless those in need, The ironic thing is when one gives the giver is blessed. I just cant explain it. Just so refreshing to bless others in small ways,
Excellent way how to convey a positive message. We need more people promoting what can be done rather than simply reporting on what's wrong with our world. The Christian message of solidarity with the weak has alsways inspired humanity. May it continue to do so to creae a more just and caring world. Laurence Zerafa
Hehe, but since people started doing "trickle-down" economy, when has it ever worked? The only economy I've ever heard of working properly, and not leaving anyone out was what I read in Acts 2. It's not about cutting back or not cutting back. It's about giving to everyone. As even the numbers testify, there is enough resources in the world for everyone. Let's give.
I like this video as well, and I'm always suspicious of numbers like that as well. I'm also suspicious of the focus of this video while it mentions Christ it doesn't really talk about why Jesus came specifically, which is ultimately for our salvation which is the eternal perspective and not the temporals of giving. If people see their need of a savior I think they will be compelled to give out of gratitude for what Christ has already done for them. Nice video though.
this movie sends chills down my back every time i watch it! me and my youth group are doing it this year :) . . . all i want for Christmas is for more people in the world to have clean water!

Alas...this video still remains useless except for its shock value. Not once in this video does it ever address the CAUSES of these problems. You can't treat an illness by fighting its symptoms one at a time.
Of course each individual is responsible for their own complacency within this system, but the peasants alone and disorganized cannot stop the "machine" at work here; people need to stand up and fight the "masters" of we, the slaves, and their "dogs" that so readily do their bidding.
villainsrule 2 years ago
@villainsrule -Yes we have all been complacent. What are the causes? I'm not sure they need to be addressed here. I'm sure we all have our own ideas about that. I think the point of this video is to fight back against mainstream commercialism without pointing fingers.
robert777m 2 years ago
@villainsrule The purpose of this video IS to shock...to make people aware, to make them think. Once you get the IDEA down then you can do something about it. It's not useless; exposure is the first step
cardo0000 2 years ago
I stand by original statement: you can't treat an illness by fighting its symptoms one at a time. If you can honestly change the consciousness of humanity by merely telling them to focus on love and not money, then go for it...prove me wrong. This video has had millions of hits in its original upload and yet still no change.
But since I'm a realist, I know you can't win this fight without taking down the powers that be in this world.
villainsrule 2 years ago
So, Mr. Realist...
Just sayin'.
lwateri 2 years ago

The saints that i know about have lived off of God alone, in which God wills everything, so if you are to die, you are to die, with or without those material things.
rekomstop4eva 2 years ago

Can't we get back to Christ in Christmas? That's what I think is really important. People don't understand Santa Clause is just another name for Saint Nicholas (with a couple letters taken out), and giving gifts to the poor.
A bunch of people don't understand what trees, wreathes, candy canes, stars, lights, and so on symbolize. Heck, even the 12 Days of Christmas deals with religious things. Are parents telling their kids about the wisemen giving gifts to Jesus?
Predatorocks 2 years ago
It is great to help people get clean and not die. This is absolutely true. However, a problem I have with this idea is that if the stores lose all this money, we lose even more jobs everywhere. Stores will have to shut down!!
I do agree that Christmas should be about Christ, and not just about spending tons of money, but at the same time, how many people would not have a home (because they got fired) if 64 billion is yanked out of stores? Stores are hurting already.

our very own churches spend millions of dollars on their christmas productions depicting a historically inaccurate representation of Jesus's birth... but hey, if it boosts their rededication quota for the year i guess its worth it.
Something is wrong with the churches in america.
timanddrewband 2 years ago
Tim and Drew - If from your tower of mistaken righteousness across the street of "Any Church, USA", you would actually check out the Advent Cospiracy you would find out it is about saving lives. Water born disease is the #1 cause of death in the World. What a sad discovery. I will be handing out coupons this year that represent a donation, in that person's name, toward clean water. Maybe you could stow your ill placed anger awhile and use that energy to help.

please do not use your church to stereotype all the churches in america. there are those who depict accurate representation of Jesus' birth and there are those who do not.

Why are you people so stupid?
You are taking such a simple concept and shoving the government up its butt. The point of this video is tell you our era is very dependent on consumerism. We dont need all the stuff we buy yet we buy it anyway. If we wanted to spend money that bad, we would give it to someone who actually NEEDS it. So dont go sticking the economy failing or the US government in here...because its not their fault our economy is failing its OURS!
vivi8D 3 years ago
For the people arguing that not spending due to the negative impact it could have on our economy I pose this question:
Which is easier for a person to recover from?
a) a poor economy and a tighter budget
or
b) death because you didn't have access to clean water.
I think that argument on not giving is a little more than selfish.
baldwinsneer 3 years ago 15
really? so you would rather innocent people die because of lack of clean water over a tight budget xmas shopping for useless gifts even when your budget is still pretty high??? I think your argument is just a little more than selfish, just a little bit. :(

madelinekat 3 years ago
Astonishing. There is really a debate going on in these comments as to whether our economy is more important that clean water? Really? You really thing that if we spent 1% less the economy would collapse? you watch too much TV.
And I think it would be worth our economy collapsing to give every person on the planet clean water. But that's just me.
benunc 3 years ago
So you'd rather give up all of your possessions, not be able to afford food, see every single person in poverty fighting to survive, and countries overtaken by warlords if it meant everyone having clean water? Because that's what happens in countries where the economy is non-exsistent (ie. plenty of African nations). Just for kicks and giggles, how old exactly are you.
Also, a significant drop in holliday spending would lead to decreased confidence on the stock market, which is the big bad part
was385 3 years ago
I honestly don't think there would be a significant drop in holiday spending. There might be a slight one, but how much damage could that really do? And I guess you're right with the countries with no economy but I don't think that spending slightly less on christmas gifts would bring that numerous and terrible of events.
madelinekat 3 years ago
economists were terribly concerned about even a 2 or 3% dropoff in holiday spending because investors were counting on this season to help out the retail stores. If there was a significant decline (like this video is suggesting, whether you agree with it or not) then stocks would tank because of that decrease in confidence and a number of retail giants would probably go under. If stocks tank here, they tank everywhere and we're screwed. Unfortunately, that's the effect of a globalized economy
was385 3 years ago
Yeah, that's what happens in countries without any sort of infrastructure when the economy fails, you're right. In our country, even during the great depression, it never got that bad.
I appreciate your sarcasm. I'm 28.
Less confidence in the stock market? Is that even possible? Who exactly is trusting in the stock market at this point? It's like a 15 year old girl throwing a temper tantrum because she can't get the pink dress for the prom. Real stable.
benunc 3 years ago
So, are you proposing do this and then engage in another world war to get us out of the depression, because that's pretty much the only reason we got out of the first one.
There can always be less. Hell, right now the Dow is up over 9,000. Also, the fact that you're joking about it's lack of stability really goes to drive home my point, so thank you for saving me the words.
was385 3 years ago
But the economy is unstable, so why should we be trusting it? Shouldn't we be trying to help other people around the world instead of sitting here, and doing nothing except hoping our economy doesn't fail?
madelinekat 3 years ago
Yes, the economy is unstable, which is exactly why we can't stop spending. Then it wouldn't be unstable, it would just be dropping like an anvil. It's great to help other people but most people do that through money, and if the economy tanks, people won't have the money to help. Believe me, this would come around to bite everyone right in the butt in the end.
was385 3 years ago
But what if the economny tanks despite everyone still spending? Then there's no way to help people. We should help them while we have the money to help, becuase money (obviously) is a fleeting thing and nobody knows what's going to happen in the future. Trusting in God and doing what He wants us to do is the best thing to do at the present. The future is up to Him.
madelinekat 3 years ago
Then, nothing we do matters. If the future is up to god completely, then giving charity really doesn't matter because anything that happens is up to God. Or maybe people have a hand in it, maybe god gave us that ability. Otherwise, nothing we do matters and therefor mankind would be pointless.
What you're proposing is to give up hope because someday there could possibly be another depression. What if god wants us to make responsible decisions that help everyone in the long run?
was385 3 years ago
It's all confusing but I believe that God gives us the ability to have a hand in things. But the future is still in His hands. What we do does matter, otherwise there would be no point in giving, or missions or anything. Which, there is most definatly a point.
And I'm not proposing to give up hope. I'm saying we should put our hope in something so much more worth while than an economy. We should put our hope, in God. Because in the end, what we do for Him is all that matters.
madelinekat 3 years ago
I guess that is where we have our fundamental disagreement because my faith is very different -- not better or worse -- just different.
was385 3 years ago
You're right. Agree to disagree?
madelinekat 3 years ago
The only thing that is going to kill our economy in America is the government continuing to try and "help" the process. What makes the American economy distinct in the history of the world is that it is a free market economy with minimal government intrusion. That's what has enabled brilliant business people like Sam Walton, Steve Jobs, and Warren Buffet to make their millions.
The news media would have you believe the economy is going to tank. The wal-mart parking lot begs to differ.
benunc 3 years ago
Why does not spending as much automatically mean economic disaster? I'll be honest, I don't know much about the economy or how it works, but I trust God. I believe that no matter what happens, even if I end up on the street with nothing, he will provide and thats all that matters. We shouldn't depend on the unreliability of an economy.
madelinekat 3 years ago
Because tons of people rely on this time of year. Retail stores are already at the brink of collapse and this is the only time of year where they can actually count on going into the black. If that goes away, stores go under and tons of people's jobs are lost when stores cut back, and then other businesses are negatively effected by the loss of their jobs indirectly. The worst possible thing to do right now is not spend and again, you'd probably be very different if you were on the street.
was385 3 years ago
Ok, I understand that, but still, it's not like they want people to not spend at all, only cut back on Christmas spending a little. And to be honest, even if some people did just that, there are so many people out there who wouldn't. And they would spend just as much or more than before. So I don't think cutting back a little for some people would make for economic disaster.
madelinekat 3 years ago
But the whole point of this is saying spend a lot less on gifts and instead put that to things like charity and do it on a large scale. That would be terrible. Now if a small amount of people choose to spend less and give more, that's great, but on a large scale, as this is suggesting, where people spend very little, it would be one of the most catastrophic economic events in our country and world's history.
was385 3 years ago
It's not saying that you should spend a lot less, it's saying either reduce the amount you spend on gifts or give more meaningful less expensive gifts, like things that you make. Which would still take money to buy the supplies to make those gifts. It is suggesting a large scale of people, but I think that the real thing is to try and get the Christians who would actually spend less, to be aware of the other things they could do.
madelinekat 3 years ago
The idea to put forward is to significantly cut holliday spending. Now that may not be your idea, but you can't argue that this is not what the video is suggesting. It's right there.
was385 3 years ago
Ok, you're right. But even if a large scale amount of people spent less, we should still trust in God to protect us and the money that we've given.
madelinekat 3 years ago
That would be so terrible for the economy. Tons of people working in retail (mostly the lower class) would lose their jobs if people stopped spending tons of money during the holidays and we'd end up having tons more poor, jobless, homeless people. Why would you ever wish something like this?
was385 3 years ago
Judge much?
DJWidget 3 years ago
how is this judging? I think it is a completely and totally absurd and ridiculous idea, but how exactly is it judging. I never judged anyone, I just pointed out why it would probably run us into another great depression and would be truly awful to a huge portion of american society, but not judging.
was385 3 years ago
Judgment in thinking only of the U.S. this season. AC is not asking to stop spending "tons" of money. It's talking about those gifts people buy that are crap anyway - the sweater you know she'll hate, the unneeded toy. Buy something truly special for a loved one; that's fine. But if you're getting something for the sake of getting a gift, it's wasted money. There are people who need true help, not another possession. Besides, even in recession, U.S. topped what we spent last year in sales!
DJWidget 3 years ago

We shouldn't depend on the unreliability of an economy.

it is so wonderful to serve & truly bless those in need, The ironic thing is when one gives the giver is blessed.

You know with the economy hurting like it is, may not be the time to cutback so much
1deseronto 3 years ago 3
Hehe, but since people started doing "trickle-down" economy, when has it ever worked? The only economy I've ever heard of working properly, and not leaving anyone out was what I read in Acts 2. It's not about cutting back or not cutting back. It's about giving to everyone. As even the numbers testify, there is enough resources in the world for everyone. Let's give.
shadow2501 3 years ago
I like this video as well, and I'm always suspicious of numbers like that as well. I'm also suspicious of the focus of this video while it mentions Christ it doesn't really talk about why Jesus came specifically, which is ultimately for our salvation which is the eternal perspective and not the temporals of giving. If people see their need of a savior I think they will be compelled to give out of gratitude for what Christ has already done for them. Nice video though.
