  • I wonder how many remember the "New Brighton Rocks" pop concerts at the pool in the 80s. Was shown on Granada TV. Some top bands and artists of the tim like Gloria Gaynor, Spandau Ballet, Nik Kershaw, Madness and Frankie Goes to Hollywood were on if I remember rightly.

  • A quality film Whats the tune?

  • @bigvis65 Its the " Miss Marple" theme tune composed by Ron Goodwin and played by his orchestra.- Good isn't it?

  • @scabycat Thanks yeah it's great, realy fits the film.

  • @bigvis65 and eddy grant also ,was great remeber tickets where free aswell

  • Hello from St Louis Mo USA , i lived Liverpool till about 12 yo ..I remember my Dad jumping off the top level of the diving board...He passed a few years ago.. Still MY HERO !

    Craig

  • the pool is being restored

  • Lovely to see. Wish they'd repaired it instead of pulling it down. Who needs ANOTHER supermarket??

  • superb sights of the old days...sadly missed views of new brighton

  • What year did Jeam Michel Jarre play there!

  • Summer of 76 was so hot, the pool use to smell of sweaty sandwiches, I watched my mum parade around in the Miss New Brighton contest, and climbed to the top of the water fountain!! Stepping over legs, walking miles around the pool to the ice cram shop.lolol those were the good old days!!

  • " I cant believe i've won "..... eyar love, errrs ya fiver..

  • Thar diving board scared the crap out of me, I first saw it when I was two!

  • I won Miss New Brighton STARLETT here in 1973!!! aged 5!! (now 42!)

It was the kiddie version of the ladies contest!!

Such fond memories of the freezing cold pool though

So very sad this pool was demolished after that storm. It was a beautiful piece of art-deco architecture!!

  • @vixtravels

lol i entered in 76, I was 5! My mum won Miss New Brighton once. Was at Winter Gardens that one. What great summers then hey.

  • the council didn't ruin anything the massive storm did they just couldn't afford to replace it and no one wanted to help so the only thing to do was take it down would love to see it back again tho

  • difficult to believe that such a vibrant place was allowed to disappear

  • Great times i had there in my youth!!

  • So many memories of the open air pool,

my late wife worked the turnstile admiting the crowds who flocked there, summer of 1976 omg after a night shift where better to have a sleep than by the pool , Wrong wife was so busy she forgot about me an when i woke mid afternoon i was well cooked lol, also off work 3 weeks with heatstroke , happy days tho

  • what's changed from the last century?? how could our town afford such things like New Brighton Baths / Derby Baths etc back then??was it that coucillors and town planners had vision and a sense of worth against cost ? people who cared about their communities and communities who had civic pride...where people just more decent then?? or are we just looking through rose tinted glasses........??

  • i was really young when this closed down but i remember swimming in it, and it was bloody cold! i think i was about 7? amazing vid, look at the weather! you dont get summers in new brighton like that now! ha ha. great vid!

  • Wow, happy memorys, i remember jumping off that top diving board

  • sad that the council poured £££s in2 the floral pavillion & pacific road theatres, but now its considering closing sports halls & libraries cos they cocked up the budget building white elephants that only a handful of ppl use.

new brighton is depressing now, when u realise how many thousands of visitors it used 2 attract. Inept councils & NIMBYs destroyed a tourist town. the same things happening in west kirby, plans 4a massive hotel blocked cos local old farts complained about the view.

  • The swimming pool was excellent, freezing but fun, especially the diving board. They should have repaired it or built another one. Since they knocked it down New Brighton deosn't really atracted visitors.

  • I remember having lots of fun here as a child in the 80s. Bunking off school and sneaking through one of the cafes to get in. Was it bloody cold? Yes. Did we care? Not a bit - brilliant fun...

  • So is the former site where the "jumps" are now?

  • im only 19 and lived in wallasey most of my life, but i absolutley love you video collection, and recognising locations and changes. good stuff :)

  • I remember going there and going off the diving boards - it was a right laugh ! My girlfriend got pushed in the deep end and couldn't swim - she nearly drowned. Gangs of us went through the tunnel in cars and were overtaking in the tunnel ! Mad days mate - mad days..

  • i love new brighton

  • im only young so (ofcorse) havn't been in the new brighton baths but my nana has told me all different stories of them. I used to live down the road from were they were and there was some posters compaining for them back.

Im not sure if they worked though x

    From,

    Sian x

  • Good comment and very right!

  • am only 23, so i was not old enough to remember that, but i go there now and all there is is a bmx ramps made from the hill there and a big huge space next too. if that pool ever game back new brighton would be just like the in this video

  • I last went here when I was 6 and spent most of the time on top of the fountain. I was gutted after the storm and they knocked it down. Wasnt that much damage and Im sure the building was insured. I know there are plans to build a new one but wonder how long tha will take. People in New Brighton seem to like the way it is and keep opposing the plans. PEOPLE OF NEW BRIGHTON, SHUT UP AND LET US HAVE A REGENERATION

  • Done all of that myself, even with a dingy in the pool and lashing down with rain!!

  • I remember going to Brighton outdoor baths when it was raining .

I was with a school pal we had just started the school holiday and had planned to go there but it turned out on that particular day the weather was wet .

But because i loved the place so much the weather wasn't a problem my mate Christine must have been mad.

I even put my swimming costume on ........

    How mad is that..........

    Birkenhead mad ............

  • New Brighton baths-the worlds coldest pool.

  • *Chuckles*

I totally agree I must have been about 5 and amy memories are jumping out just as fast as I jumped in. Shocked with Frostbite.

Never went back in it again, stayed in the fountain.

  • i seem to remember that only a single section of the wall was damaged accounting for less than 1% of the total structure.

WBC you are a fucking disgrace, i have many happy childhood memories of new brighton, thousans of local happy people walking, using the pool and the indoor funfair, going to all the arcades. great atmosphere great times.

who ever made that decision, congrats you have drove a knife through the wirral and its people.

  • New Brightons pool loss was WBC's most shameful act of short sighted descration. It ripped the last of New Brightons soul out and paved the way for a town full of narrow minded NIMBY'S that still inhabit the place tody. Mind if you take off the rose tinted specs for a while...the pool was a bit minty towards the end wasnt it???!!! anybody any memories of New Ferry baths??? another Council shame..

  • @holderrob to call everyone from New Brighton narrow minded, makes me think that you must live there yourself.... your an idiot, that had a valid point until you said that..

  • Those who were in power on Wirral Borough Council at the time and let these baths disapear are an absoloute disgrace.

These baths were an asset to our townand should have repaired but our short-sighted council probably could not wait to pull them down and the storm damage was the perfecr excuse.

They could have found the funding from somewhere fro the repairs if they wanted to.

  • NOT MUCH FOOTAGE OF THE STORM DAMAGE ?

  • Totally blown away, what great footage, God bless you for that little trip back down my childhood

  • Wirral Borough Council need to take a look at this video and see what they ruined. Just take a look at the thousands of people there. Now its just thousands of lamposts and signs aggggghhhhhhh they sure know how to ruin a good thing do our council. Of course they will blame it on the storms and say it HAD to come down ready for a giant supermarket to built in a few years

  • £250,000 to repair it that was the figure not £2 million as wirral borough council said at the time

  • @wirralpainter. Wake up!! Easy Jet to Salou for £30!! Even with globel warming we would be to cold or too snobish to go to New Brighton Baths ( or Salou!! ) Times have changed. In the 90s maybe they were too quick to right- off the baths but by now it would be history!!

  • @wirralpainter we have a similar council in s-o-t staffs...some people only in for themselves...sad...my dad said new brighton was a great place to go...sure paul mccartney remembers it well too...
