  • So, what happens when there's a mass power outage for days and some whiny kid can charge his iPood? Well, obviously, the battery dies. Then he can''t listen to his music. But hang on. What's this here?

    (Video)

    My question is...

Will said whiny child know where to find a record, know what it looks like, or how it works? With that question answered, will they know that this trick works on vinyls?

If they do, will they try it on their CD's?

  • the iPod of the 80s

  • nice one! I do wish people would stop with their silly comments, they could do so much more with positivity :)

  • This would probably work better on 78s.

  • Pretty cool.

  • OMG, I cringed when I heard the first scratch.

  • I tried this, you can't really listen to the record when you're trying your best not to make a fat ass gouge in your vinyl! It's also not practical to sit there for an hour while your record plays. Time and money wasting moron.

  • If I try it just once will it destroy my record At all?

  • @rockfan856 I wouldn't try it. It's not a good idea.

  • POOR RECORD! Call the Prevention of the Cruelty to Records.

  • I think this is great! For narrow minded people who don't understand the concept of creativity and fun: nobody asked you to do this to your records. And yes,it's FUNNY.

  • it's realy fake

  • @mertskycan not really its just bumbs on the record that make sounds...this is how early phonograghs worked...jus crank it and go

  • Fake lan bu

  • i use a papper cup and real record needle!its awsome!and it dosnt mess the record up!

  • The only thing missing from this video is a DJ...Love to see somebody trying to scratch to this...lol

  • @lickensike, what's so "funny" about it? :P

  • Someone may have already asked, but what is the song being played, please?

  • oh my god that's so cool!

  • Why use a Needle? can't you use the sharp edge on the paper?

  • well, this is a cool vid but here is the serious part.....(sorry guys to burst your bubble)

This can and will cause damage to your record no matter what type. this is still cool though! so by pressing down on the record you are putting pressure that is destroying it, so basically over time of doing it..... you will destroy the record

  • the best turntable in the market !! do some dj scratchin' !! just kiddin'....good job on your invention ^_^

  • im going to do this to my prized led zeppelin collection, nah im just kidding

  • Wrap some tape around the end of the cone to make a plastic "needle". It won't damage the records like a steel sewing pin will.

  • i remember doing this as a kid and sticking a small microphone inside the cone right near the needle...starting out u can hear everything voices music instruments later though the music and instruments cut out and u may hear few things u can easily hit scratches

  • Along the same lines as this video, you can create a home made microphone (no, I don't have a video).

Use two razor blades, a cigar box (or similar), and a graphite pencil lead. Mount the blades in the box separated by about an inch parallel to each other, connect wires to each blade and connect to whatever amp you'll use. Lay the pencil lead across the blades perpendicular to them. It works.

A speaker will also function as a microphone.

Neither of these microphones will win awards.

  • The comments on this video are hilarious, and at the same time, depressing. Most of them just don't "get it" that this is a demonstration and that nobody would use this to sit around and listen to records this way. OF COURSE you wouldn't do this with any vinyl that mattered.

And YES, you can still by turntables. Even USB turntables designed to easily digitize your LPs. Good grief, doesn't anyone read anymore?

  • @NCCNeon

And what exactly would you describe as "vinyl that matters"? It just breaks my heart when I see something destructive like this. It's like those videos where people are smashing old "worthless" equipment, just for fun.

Videos which actually impress me are those where people demonstrate technical expertise to IMPROVE something. Like the fiber-glass laser record player. This here is just killing time out of silly boredom.

  • @porcorosso81 Vinyl that matters? Anything that anyone might ever care to listen to, I suppose.

I was a DJ from 1974 to 1992. Much of that time we spun real vinyl disks. While I paid cash money for hundreds of LPs, I aquired thousands of promotional LPs for free. I still have several shelves full of them in a storage room. Nobody will ever have any interest in them and eventually, I'll either sell the for a giveaway price, or just throw them in the trash.

Not all vinyl is sacred, ya know.

  • @NCCNeon...those were good years of house music, awesome that you were a dj during the beginning. please contact me before throwing ANY vinyl away, im a vinyl collector, and mix records currently. sad that technics just discontinued the 1200s...everything is going to digital now, but hey, it just makes my collection more valuable in my eyes. :)

  • Needles will damage your record

  • that's cool!

  • true... although I wouldnt do this to your prise vinyl Beatles collection...

  • @clipdan

    exactly....

    lol

  • eeee....................

  • Hey how about a video on buying $8 Technics Turntables from Goodwill?

  • Dude, good idea but don't use a metal needle. That will destroy the vinyl. Use a toothpick (that will cause no harm to the record). ;)

  • this is a tutor for peeps didn't pay the energy bill.

  • You should rename this video to: how to destroy your record collection the slow way...

  • @porcorosso81 how to destroy your record collection the slow way...

  • @porcorosso81 this is a sickening display of record abuse

  • @porcorosso81 If you love your records, probably you also have a good record player so you don't have to make this player.... It's just a funny experiment...

  • @lieckenske

This depends on what you define as funny. I personally wasn't raised with a golden spoon stuffed up my ass, which is probably the reason why I detest people who destroy things out of sheer boredom.

  • @porcorosso81 if you do this good and dont press the needle in the record like some moron and u only do it like once just for the experiment it does no or so little harm to your records that u wouldnt even notice...

  • @porcorosso81 i used this on my shitty ones. its still cool.

  • what kind of needle do you use? this is pretty sweet.

  • ive tried it it works realy well especialy if youve all ready got a turntable and do it for a mess about. i made one with a thinner cone i then hold it like a pen, press it firmly but gently to the record and it sounds great for what it is, when i did it itr did not skip. The volume is quite lound and i even managed to engrave my voice into a cd by shoutung loudly down the cone.

  • if it worked for you what kind of needle do u use? should i use a sewing needle?

  • Yeah jst a sewing needle and tape it to the inside or outside of the tube

  • i'll upload a video of mine

  • @lce124 ...engraved your voice into a cd by shouting into the cone ?! I'll believe it when I see it .

  • 33 RPM or 45 RPM and you can say

    that was great

  • what song is that

  • I did this but it didn't work. I have a bunch of 33's.

  • One question.... WHY????

  • Cause they dont make record players any more

  • yea they do...look it up

  • yea they do! search turntable on amazon

  • ya they do. the Hastings down here sells bran new ones

  • that was great

  • Comment removed

  • you stole my idea lol

  • Hasnt none noticed that this thing totally rips apart your vinyl grooves? I would rather be 100% deaf than touch that needle on a vinyl of mine.

  • i totally agree. im a dj and WTF. never in my life would i do that. ahhh wow. its hard to even watch.

  • I used a needle on a junk record that I replaced...the problem I had was getting the speed right...so I tried a drill and it worked well.

  • dont do the needle just fold the paper into a fine cone shape keeping a nice point unless u wana fuck ur shit up XD

  • I did it I made a turntable out of knex and it sounds pretty good

  • i wouldnt reccoment taping a needle to the end

  • does it matter if you use a sewing needle?

  • it would damage the record with any metal needle

  • that is so cool. im a 90's kid so ive never even seen a record player in real life. but a paper cone and a needle? thats crazy! i dont understand how the sound comes out so good with a paper cone.

  • you never seened a record player???? i borned at 1997 and i know it like 3 years old :D. oh well.... you can also use only paper horn and it will NOT damage record. but when the paper "neddle" is not sharp, it doesnt play the record so you have to make a second paper horn...

  • Oh yeah, from your comment we have no doubts you were "borned" at 1997 ¬_¬

  • Ok, i guess this is for the new generation. I learned this stuff when i was like 11? Guess we just had good informing tvshows back then...

  • In the name of science and experimentation 10 points, as far as longevity of a collection, 0 :-) Try experimenting with different materials as the "horn/cone".

  • wow this is shit.. even my 5 years old sister can do it better

  • sure.just like you can make an homemade condom.lol :)

  • who in the hell wont want to listen to there records like that. nobody i know would want to hold the cone and spin the record like that

  • its just for fun lol

  • yeah i tried it its pretty cool but id rather use my turn table lol

  • In the 80'ies I did that with a needle and an empty thin plastic cup. I used to play promotional free plastic records, from the Reader's Digest mail!. I had lots of them to use in parties!.

  • i thought i invented this!!

  • Thats just insane...a paper cone and a needle...

  • Actually it already works with just a straight piece of paper. The needle typically is a very bad idea as it's usually far to thick to actually track anything, but so hard it could damage the record.

  • What is he rotating the record on?

  • oh god stop, that poor record is getting tortured

  • dont use metal it damages the record

  • wat else u suppose to use????

  • umm, a piece of like hot wheels grade plastic sharpened with a razor blade or if your really good you can get a couple uses by just rolling the paper really really tight

  • If you'd read the description, I thin k you would gather that he know that.

  • i read the description i just said that if you just use the paper you can use good records too because the steel nails wear away the vinyl

  • Are you sure? I would've thought you'd end up leaving fine deposits in the grooves? If it's died/coloured paper, this would also come off on the vinyl would it not?

  • thts true somewhat and thts a pretty smart thought but you can get paper out of the grooves but you cant make them come back if the needle wears away at them, plus you wouldnt do this with like a 1970's rolling stones record unless your an idiot so there wouldnt really be a need to worry about it either way im just ssaying papers the smarter choice

  • Though I've seen this before, it is still pretty amazing to me that this can be done!

  • oh wow.

  • MacGyver did something kind of like this in season 4.

  • LOL!!

  • You just destroyed a crystal method record to see a caveman record player? I don't know why you'd want to do this to a crystal method record. If you have some free time and some poor records you don't like and aren't worth anything sure, cool. But records are expensive, some really expensive. Read up on how they make decent stylus. The actual needles are extremely precise.

  • it works i just tried it with an old crystal method record. its not loud and it damages the record!!! but its fun to fuck around with to show your friends

  • niesamowite! :P

  • Omigosh!! I never knew that!!! That's AWESOME!! WoW~

  • my grade school music teacher showed me this one time, but instead of taping the needle to the end, he shoved it through the tip of the cone sideways, but i guess it works no matter how you do it

  • NO! well ofcourse it works

  • are there any alternatives for the needle that dont damage the record?

  • i try that before when i was younger it really works not very loud but it works.

  • ommmmmmmmggggggg!!!! fuckyourcool!!!!

  • what is that song?

  • I will survive

  • Buggy

  • its good if you want to look for subliminal messages :D

  • coooooooooooool

  • awsome..nice discover

  • Very cool idea.

  • i really dont understand how they could make ridges for all the sounds of music, so that it could be remade by vibrating through a needle

  • It was recorded that way. Not done manually. The ridges were made in a very similiar way to it being played back.

  • That's a phonogragh in 5 minutes :-D Put the cone on a balance of some sort... some string and a clockwork motor and your done!

  • Does this really work? just paper and needle? impossible. I would try but I don't have any records. Pretty cool though :D. Thanks for showing us.

  • yo thst is hella tite!

  • gotta say thats pretty cool, keep these cool how to vids comin@ ist comment btw :)
