That's the thing, he didn't think outside the box, nor did he create something new. He ripped off other artists work, the spot paintings, the shark, the pharmacy, the spin paintings, the crucified sheep, the cow, the floating ball..... too name a few.

@chaosproduction a lot of people don't get artists like Damien hirst or jeff koons. i like to think that they are not only visual artists but they are also performance artists. Jeff Koons has created this persona that he is a pretentious asshole who creates kitschy art that sells for millions. In a way both Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons are mocking the current state of the art world, and in that sense they sort of remind me of Andy Warhol with his mass

Andy Warhol was showcasing this synthetic false reality of and glitz and glamour, and Damien hirst is showing us that the art world is basically a zoo. i mean, we have museums who have collectors who are artists who are guest curators who place their own works in the show. the more i read stories about artists like damien hirst i slowly learn the art world is more about business than the creative process.

Rich man artist sets himself up for scorn and criticism. He's pretty restricted really. How to please a nation of underprivileged and poor artists. Personally I like the look of the skull bling. The play with death and wealth, stark nakedness and diamond-encrustment. At least he isn't rolling in shit like some other artists. Suppose you do use what's around you. Damien Hirst has my blessing.

He refers to the creation of the skull as "we did this" and "we did that". I know hirst has assistants and employees who produce a lot of his mass scale artworks, but art creation is personal and true to oneself. Hirst is a genius businessman and money maker, but dedicated artist, I think not.

Hirst is a hack. I know dozens of artist, illustrators and graphic designers who produce more interesting and technically proficient work on a daily basis. Modern art is mostly the byproduct of hype and untrained buyers who follow that hype.
