This song gets me everytime. Love the original recording, but this live version is also great. I especially love the camera shots of the choir boys; those seasoned men look like they've been through stuff and just feel it when they are singing. I hope I can still make and feel music this deeply as an old man....
This song has, and always will move me to to my toes.
As a NYC born baby Boomer I remember walking through the park on a cold winters nice after Christmas singing Simon and Garfunkel in four part harmony with my rat pack. We were just kids.
For me ONLY the Beatles surpass the beauty of their lyrics and harmonies.
@mrbobevans I love the Beatles, but I enjoy Paul's music more. I guess the most obvious comparison is Paul and Bob Dylan, like Roy Orbison with Buddy Holly.
Simply amazing! This version is not as impressive as the studio version with Garfunkel, but is almost as haunting and beautiful. Why can't we have songwriters like this today?
This is such a lovely song; from the S&G days. On the original recording, the "aahh" vocals are layered harmonies by Simon and Garfunkel and are just otherwordly and beautiful. Paul wrote this song about Art when Art was overseas shooting a film and Paul was left in New York.
It's just wrong when it isn't Garfunkel singing it... I don't know why, because Paul Simon pulls off an exceptional vocal performance for him, it just isn't how it should be
Paul Simon was always the one who sung this song, I'm not sure why you thought Garfunkel was the original lead singer. He is just singing the background harmony and the high peaceful parts where they dubbed both of their voices
I only wished it would be possible for me to express in words what you mean to me, Paul. You had been a Guardian Angel through my whole life. This song was written deep from my very mind. Thank you, blessed soul, for everything.<3
@521Riley Amen to that! So, what aren't they famous? Perhaps because their songs actually have meaning, have soul, have hope for a newer day. They are passion.
@521Riley Amen to that! So, what aren't they famous? Perhaps because their songs actually have meaning, have soul, have hope for a newer day. They are passion. They care about their music.
The amazing thing about Paul Simon is that, when he sings, he really tells stories in beautiful melody. That's the typical color of a folk song writer, composer and singer. Paul Simon is really an excellent folk singer and consistent of being a rock folk artist embracing also the beautiful African color of music.
In the original, the song was for Art (Simon and Garfunkel used to call themselves Tom and Jerry). As Simon's years pass I find there is a urgent poignancy to this and so many other songs he has written. We have only a short time with this great genius and his latest album underscores this. I hope he re-records all his original material again for posterity--an aging and frightened audience could use these secular prayers.
Sad. Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Ray Davies and the rest of that wonderful generation You thought they'd be here forever, so did I once. They won't. This is probably the last decade that they 'll be able to do their stuff. Enjoy them!
You may be right. But hitting the notes is not the only way to sing a song well. I mean: it's still HIS song, and he IS the only living boy in New York.
@Steadyfreddyboy of course it is his song but there is no sense in being nostalgic for the sake of it. I am sure even Simon himself would admit his voice isn't as beautiful as it used to be. My opinions are not a dig at Paul Simon, hes my favourite artist. I love his work but there is no sense in denying the obvious.
yes he lost a bit of his voice, maybe its not age related...possibly a heavy drinker..smoker? not sure..but hes a legend..great music and song writing...huge comparison between todays music and the music of the 'past'
They broke up. They got back together. They do separate albums. They do concerts together. They break up. They do an anniversary tour. They do different tours. They do joint concerts. They break up...
There is not doubt that Simon is brilliant - I agree - but the sound of the two of them singing was something else no one had - that's why they were so popular and I miss their sound together.
ethan is correct on the origin of the song (Garfunkel going to film Catch-22), but I see it as a very generous song in that context, especially considering how their studio partnership was about to end. At any rate, it's a fantastic song with some great, still relevant ("I get the news I need on the weather report") lyrics.
It is something I have thought of many times in my life. Half of the time we are trying to go somewhere, or get something, but when it's all said and done, we don't really know what it was all about. It was something that meant something when we were young, but in the grand scheme of things, it meant nothing. Jackson Browne wrote, "Among the thoughts that crowd your mind, there won't be many that ever really mattered." Same thing.
Thanks, I thought it meant to say that something like "we make so many mistakes in our lives", and by saying "gone" maybe he meant/means (he's still alive!) we act like fools "half the time". It's been said that the songs is about the break up with G, (wasn't G "Tom" in the early days? I always took TOLBINY was Paul, anyway, that is some song.
Yes you are 100 % correct. The song is about Art Garfunkel going to Mexico and filming the movie Catch 22, and how Paul felt he was abandoning him. That's why the song kinda has a bitter undertone. "Hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile" means I got nothing to do here now you are gone. Paul thought he couldn't live without Art. Yes, Art was Tom, and Paul was Jerry.
I think it is more literal, since the song, though absolutely and incredibly beautiful, a masterpiece and a work of art, is actually a sad song written about the breaking up of Tom and Jerry, Simon and Garfunkel..."half of the time we're gone but we don't know where" referred to the fact that their partnership was ending by a simple lack of the devotion of time together to create, not by much more sinister forces. Their breakup for me was one of the signposts of the 60s really having ended.
He has kept his falsetto in fantastic nick. That voice will never fail to give me goosebumps, and those stunning choral BVs really take it up to 11. Cannot wait for the concert in June. Love to everyone x
paul is a genius and art has an amazing voice. Paul is fine without art, but together they sound amazing. Plus, they're freinds. That's all that matters!

Maybe I got you wrong, but did just say that you love Paul because he has stuck with the same kind of music thoughout the years ?
You couldn't be more wrong.
I love Paul Simon exactly because he experimented with so many different styles as almost no other musician ! He preferred to explore more styles in music rather than just getting tons of money and play with Art his whole live.
BTW: this version of Only living boy is OUTSTANDING !
kinda weird when they're all singing cuz paul is singing the high pitch that art would usually sing and vincent and mark (the other guys) are singing the lower pitch that paul would usually sing

i am one of the most ardent paul simon fans ever, but this take was dissapointing, and im thinking there was a sore throat problem,or everyone on the video was stoned. Not good,i mean just listen to those harmonies, ouch!Pauls been around a while and he may be getting a bit complacent, but there's no room for slacking ever. With youtube and the internet your work will always be up for scrutiny, and 99% wont care about your back catalogue.
Paul has lost control of his voice because he tries to sound the same as when he was young. But his voice is much older and he tries to compensate by holding back his mature and wide vibrato and can't hold it and loses pitch and doesn't have the air to sing. This is a typical perfomance that he does today. Garfunkle, on the other hand, can still sound great but not as high as when he was younger.
Paul Simon's voice hasn't changed . . . ever! His music is timeless . . . and still moving and wonderful. This is my girlfriend's favourite song . . . and she was born in 1981.
You can't really compare. Dylan's style is rough. Paul Simon's style is pure and angelic. His mature voice can't sound like when he was young, unfortunately.
I agree with ramsuz,Mr SIMON has no age.His music has been part of my youth, my past my present and it always be.I hope his songs will be part of my children´s life too.
my best friend and i use to sing this song all of the time and i miss him dearly he died 2 years ago at the age of 40. Such a shame he will be misssed ROBO this one is for you ...Half of the time we're gone ...man
The guitarist with sideburns is the most exciting person to watch at Paul Simon's gigs, he switches from vox to guitar to baritone saxophone all in one song- You Can Call me all methinks
One of my favourite songs...I always thought the song is blue, every time I listend to it I just get that "blue feeling", and according to paul's choice of sweater he clearly seem to agree. :)
This is just one of those songs that touches the soul........paul simon at his very best...great lyrics and a haunting melody

i am one of the most ardent paul simon fans ever, but this take was dissapointing, and im thinking there was a sore throat problem,or everyone on the video was stoned.

This is my girlfriend's favourite song . . . and she was born in 1981.

he should give dylan singing lessons. example of aged well vocals vs sounding like a gargling dying pig. amazing. i wish i could see the duo one day.

dylan cant sing
soundshapers 3 years ago 2
~He can sing but Paul Simon is much more better. He is a real singer and artist!

You should listen to Lay Lady Lay, Dylan can sing.

very true. Simon is great, but can't compare to DYLAN!!!!!!!!!!
tommie66tx 3 years ago
You can't really compare. Dylan's style is rough. Paul Simon's style is pure and angelic. His mature voice can't sound like when he was young, unfortunately.

Simon looks like a 10th grade geometry teacher. Or my fathers accountant friend. He is so unassuming, but so rad.

Also..The guitarist with sideburns looks alot like a Ted! England?....ummm maybe he is kicking someones arse after each show?
bobdwilliams 4 years ago
The guitarist with sideburns is the most exciting person to watch at Paul Simon's gigs, he switches from vox to guitar to baritone saxophone all in one song- You Can Call me all methinks

good call!

One of my favourite songs...I always thought the song is blue, every time I listend to it I just get that "blue feeling", and according to paul's choice of sweater he clearly seem to agree. :)

His voice is still so perfectly clear and smooth...like a fine-tuned instrument.
theonlyyadgirl 4 years ago 4
He sings Garfunkel's high vocal part in this version; Paul is really fantastic as a songwritter and singer.
