  • This is just one of those songs that touches the soul........paul simon at his very best...great lyrics and a haunting melody

  • THE BEST EVER!!! I LOVE YOU PAUL SIMON <3

  • the hairs on the back of my neck love this song

  • Thank you America for music like this.

  • I absolutely love this song <3!

  • i use to whistle this song when i walk alone in the streets at night.

  • Paul Simon: una leyenda Viviente, simplemente un GRANDE

  • Three people don't have their indication finger under control! -.-

That is one of the most wonderful songs I have ever heard!

And it's even more wonderful when it's sung by Paul Simon! :')

  • My favorite song. Ever. This is wonderful!

  • This song gets me everytime. Love the original recording, but this live version is also great. I especially love the camera shots of the choir boys; those seasoned men look like they've been through stuff and just feel it when they are singing. I hope I can still make and feel music this deeply as an old man....

  • Paul has the best sounding guitars I've heard.

  • So simple but arent all the great songs so simple? Incredible

  • a legend

  • Queens Rock rules!

  • Thanks Honda for bringing back a masterpiece!

  • @urundone i agree, that ad gives me chills.

  • oww gosh! Paul Simon is a big part of my childhood! i love his talent! :3

  • This song is used for some commercial. I can't remember the company

  • @mrbobevans Featured in ad campaign for the 2010 Honda Accord

  • @mrbobevans LOL, it's a car, but I can't remember if it's Toyota or Honda...I guess the song got our attention so well we didn't notice the product.

  • This song has, and always will move me to to my toes.

As a NYC born baby Boomer I remember walking through the park on a cold winters nice after Christmas singing Simon and Garfunkel in four part harmony with my rat pack. We were just kids.

For me ONLY the Beatles surpass the beauty of their lyrics and harmonies.

    Thanks Paul and Art.

  • @LordofDublin4 For me, Paul surpasses the Beatles. Just listen to this song.

  • @mrbobevans I love the Beatles, but I enjoy Paul's music more. I guess the most obvious comparison is Paul and Bob Dylan, like Roy Orbison with Buddy Holly.

  • Hi, Im Mitsch from Germany,

Paul Simon is the best over, I wish him all the best, thank you

    for you music.

  • One of is best interpretations

  • Simply amazing! This version is not as impressive as the studio version with Garfunkel, but is almost as haunting and beautiful. Why can't we have songwriters like this today?

  • paul simon....genius..but thats coz he's an alien....CHECK.OUT.THOSE.EARS......!!!!?????

  • @Richardichard I THOUGHT THE SAME THING!

  • @msgroovytwoshoes ha ha.......Glad Im not alone. Just waking up, in Moscow, visiting girlfriend...Have a lovely day my friend!!

  • @Richardichard LOL!!!

  • the best singer song writer of our time! thank you Paul!

  • This is such a lovely song; from the S&G days. On the original recording, the "aahh" vocals are layered harmonies by Simon and Garfunkel and are just otherwordly and beautiful. Paul wrote this song about Art when Art was overseas shooting a film and Paul was left in New York.

  • This is probably the best song ever written. I wish i could see him live sometime.

  • Sad to think that some of todays younger generation will never hear this or understand it, thxs Paul.

  • My wife and I saw Paul Simon and Bob Dylan in the same concert in Chicago. I will never forget that concert.

  • @mrbobevans That would be just way to much to handle!

  • Paul Simon is what I love about America.

  • It's just wrong when it isn't Garfunkel singing it... I don't know why, because Paul Simon pulls off an exceptional vocal performance for him, it just isn't how it should be

  • @josh3xq

Paul Simon was always the one who sung this song, I'm not sure why you thought Garfunkel was the original lead singer. He is just singing the background harmony and the high peaceful parts where they dubbed both of their voices

  • I only wished it would be possible for me to express in words what you mean to me, Paul. You had been a Guardian Angel through my whole life. This song was written deep from my very mind. Thank you, blessed soul, for everything.<3

  • Quite simply the best artist currently living. That was amazing.

  • beautiful song !

  • these guys ae so much betteer than justin biever

  • @521Riley Amen to that! So, what aren't they famous? Perhaps because their songs actually have meaning, have soul, have hope for a newer day. They are passion.

  • @521Riley Amen to that! So, what aren't they famous? Perhaps because their songs actually have meaning, have soul, have hope for a newer day. They are passion. They care about their music.

  • The amazing thing about Paul Simon is that, when he sings, he really tells stories in beautiful melody. That's the typical color of a folk song writer, composer and singer. Paul Simon is really an excellent folk singer and consistent of being a rock folk artist embracing also the beautiful African color of music.

  • Bridge Over Trouble Water is such an amazing album...so many fantastic songs like this one!

  • In the original, the song was for Art (Simon and Garfunkel used to call themselves Tom and Jerry). As Simon's years pass I find there is a urgent poignancy to this and so many other songs he has written. We have only a short time with this great genius and his latest album underscores this. I hope he re-records all his original material again for posterity--an aging and frightened audience could use these secular prayers.

  • so nice voice... :) peacefull song...

  • GREAT LIVE

  • is that mick the dig from time team playing leccy guitar?

  • Nice try spenserspenser25. hartjonnyace - absolutely spot on what you said.

  • I must hear this song everyday...in any way, shape, or form.

  • Let's not forget John Lennon.

  • Dead even in my book about Dylan and Simon. One thing for sure though, no one is even close - they´re by far the two best writers ever!

  • @anwest And dont forget Pete Townshend, a genius as well. I would say; Simon, Townshend and Dylan...

  • @anwest

    Don't forget Neil Young!

  • Except for Bob Dylan.

  • There's only one thing you can say about Paul, nobody do's it better, he's the greatest singer song writer on earth, bar none.. :-)

  • nick drake.

  • This makes me think of my love Mo, sighs......

  • Paul is my musical idol. He is nothing short of inspirational....

  • Sweet Jesus! Talk about sideburns...

  • Neil Young is jealous of those sideburns.

  • Aged gracefully i put it , i saw him and Art in Brissy this year and they are still the best harmonic voices EVER

  • You may be right. But hitting the notes is not the only way to sing a song well. I mean: it's still HIS song, and he IS the only living boy in New York.

  • @Steadyfreddyboy of course it is his song but there is no sense in being nostalgic for the sake of it. I am sure even Simon himself would admit his voice isn't as beautiful as it used to be. My opinions are not a dig at Paul Simon, hes my favourite artist. I love his work but there is no sense in denying the obvious.

  • yes he lost a bit of his voice, maybe its not age related...possibly a heavy drinker..smoker? not sure..but hes a legend..great music and song writing...huge comparison between todays music and the music of the 'past'

  • this is so awesome. thanks for posting! =)

  • Still haunting after all these years! What a writer and performer - S & G together are still in a different league!

  • his earlobes are connected to his neck, they don't dangle. yeah that is strange.

  • DON'T MESS WITH THE SIMON EARS.

  • I'va been listening to his music for over 20 years now (I'm 36) but it was today that I noticed that Paul has really strange ears.

  • at 2:08 haha

  • They broke up. They got back together. They do separate albums. They do concerts together. They break up. They do an anniversary tour. They do different tours. They do joint concerts. They break up...

  • They never should have broken up.

  • Ditching Garfunkel was a good move. I love their stuff, but Paul Simon's solo albums are in another league.Brilliant!

  • There is not doubt that Simon is brilliant - I agree - but the sound of the two of them singing was something else no one had - that's why they were so popular and I miss their sound together.

  • and then?

this break up was the best thing for Paul.

  • who asked you.

  • ethan is correct on the origin of the song (Garfunkel going to film Catch-22), but I see it as a very generous song in that context, especially considering how their studio partnership was about to end. At any rate, it's a fantastic song with some great, still relevant ("I get the news I need on the weather report") lyrics.

  • great.

    thanks for sharing.

one of my fvorites by P.S.

  • thanks!!!!!!!

  • By far my favorite Paul Simon song.

  • definitely

  • Paul Simon är ett geni, jag är oerhört tacksam över att fått leva i samma tidperiod som honom tack.

  • It's sad when we look at the things we thought were something special when we were young and dumb. And none of it was worth the trouble.

  • what does "half of the time we're gone but we don't know where" mean?

  • Perhaps just that it all goes by too quickly? Where does time go when it passes, anyways?

  • It is something I have thought of many times in my life. Half of the time we are trying to go somewhere, or get something, but when it's all said and done, we don't really know what it was all about. It was something that meant something when we were young, but in the grand scheme of things, it meant nothing. Jackson Browne wrote, "Among the thoughts that crowd your mind, there won't be many that ever really mattered." Same thing.

  • Thanks, I thought it meant to say that something like "we make so many mistakes in our lives", and by saying "gone" maybe he meant/means (he's still alive!) we act like fools "half the time". It's been said that the songs is about the break up with G, (wasn't G "Tom" in the early days? I always took TOLBINY was Paul, anyway, that is some song.

  • Yes you are 100 % correct. The song is about Art Garfunkel going to Mexico and filming the movie Catch 22, and how Paul felt he was abandoning him. That's why the song kinda has a bitter undertone. "Hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile" means I got nothing to do here now you are gone. Paul thought he couldn't live without Art. Yes, Art was Tom, and Paul was Jerry.

  • I think it is more literal, since the song, though absolutely and incredibly beautiful, a masterpiece and a work of art, is actually a sad song written about the breaking up of Tom and Jerry, Simon and Garfunkel..."half of the time we're gone but we don't know where" referred to the fact that their partnership was ending by a simple lack of the devotion of time together to create, not by much more sinister forces. Their breakup for me was one of the signposts of the 60s really having ended.

  • Dear Tom,

    that's RIGHT. Simply and clearly.

    Regards,

    L.

  • He has kept his falsetto in fantastic nick. That voice will never fail to give me goosebumps, and those stunning choral BVs really take it up to 11. Cannot wait for the concert in June. Love to everyone x

  • paul is a genius and art has an amazing voice. Paul is fine without art, but together they sound amazing. Plus, they're freinds. That's all that matters!

  • The bass player is amazing.

  • no doubt!! So good. And a great sound

  • Noone needs Garfunkel..

  • you said what I was gonna say.thanks!

  • I'd like to thank Garden State for turning me onto this song. I had heard some of Paul Simon's other works before this but I hadn't grasped his greatness. This song rules and I am now a fan of Paul Simon.

  • damn you Paul, you are making me cry again.

  • do not say anything bad about paul simon. he wrote all the songs art jus had the voice. he has stuck with the same type of music throughout the years. and for that he is my best

  • @systemursupar

Maybe I got you wrong, but did just say that you love Paul because he has stuck with the same kind of music thoughout the years ?

    You couldn't be more wrong.

I love Paul Simon exactly because he experimented with so many different styles as almost no other musician ! He preferred to explore more styles in music rather than just getting tons of money and play with Art his whole live.

BTW: this version of Only living boy is OUTSTANDING !

  • there is an old Italian saying which when translated says: "Old age is a corpse."

  • That's a confusing saying. But I suppose it makes sense. ...Right?

  • this is one of my favorite songs by Paul Simon. I love him soooo much. he is a genius. greatest songwriter ever.

  • kinda weird when they're all singing cuz paul is singing the high pitch that art would usually sing and vincent and mark (the other guys) are singing the lower pitch that paul would usually sing

  • Comment removed

  • not to be getting involved or anything but the fact that both of you keep replying kinda shows that your both a little bit self righteous. btw it is spelled with an i u can just google it XD.

  • it doesnt sound right without Art.

  • Fully live its so difficult to do these full bodied rich songs with their strong backing harmonies justice and yet as ever Paul and his wonderful band have done just that.

As far as Paul Simon is concerned the body may age and the face but his voice is just as good as it ever was, dare i say even better

Take not new up and commin bands, this is how its done

  • It was already some decades of years since I had listened to this song, living in the small countryside in Japan. I knew the city name "New York" then.

  • Lost his voice Burnsie364!

You go write and sing me a song like this then come back and kiss my soft white ass!

    Best song .......ever....

  • Best live version of this beautiful song ever.

Paul Simon is a genious !

  • pauls lost his voice a little bit with age

  • Are you kiddin!!!????

I so dont agree but i guess we all have our opinions

  • a sublime song from of the greatest word-smiths that ever lived.

  • hmmm...he's more likely on cadmium.

  • Could that be Stephan Stills on lead??

  • I am a huge Paul Simon fan...check out my version of this song...thanks!

  • This is marvellous song, misunderstood. It's woth of more consideration

  • i forget can i ask you sir paul can write one for me, just call it ariane, please.

  • sir paul, it's a great song! i love it so much it remembers me much of Ariane. How do you do to write all this men? i'd like to be at your place sir paul.

  • Wat een eerbied.

  • Still beautiful. Thanks Paul and backing band.

  • This is to astralislux, and moondogs99.

Paul Simon is one of the greatest ever. If not thee greatest.

He is 66, and had over 600,000 people watch him in the Rome Collosseum when he was 62.

    MY point is...

    you do it.

  • :-)

  • brilliant thank you

    steve from Australia

  • I heart Paul Simon, it was funny when he played SA in the eighties and pissed off all those leftie bastards.

  • maybe you should've listened a little more closely to those "leftie bastard" educators. Perhaps then you would be able to spell "heard," and write in complete, clear sentences.

  • no it means i like him hes good

  • Paul has lost control of his voice because he tries to sound the same as when he was young. But his voice is much older and he tries to compensate by holding back his mature and wide vibrato and can't hold it and loses pitch and doesn't have the air to sing. This is a typical perfomance that he does today. Garfunkle, on the other hand, can still sound great but not as high as when he was younger.

  • In what year was this?

  • Two drummers, and one of them is Steve Gadd!!

  • Paul Simon's voice hasn't changed . . . ever! His music is timeless . . . and still moving and wonderful. This is my girlfriend's favourite song . . . and she was born in 1981.

  • You' re right He is forever! I like him very much

  • he should give dylan singing lessons. example of aged well vocals vs sounding like a gargling dying pig. amazing. i wish i could see the duo one day.

  • dylan cant sing

  • ~He can sing but Paul Simon is much more better. He is a real singer and artist!

  • You should listen to Lay Lady Lay, Dylan can sing.

  • very true. Simon is great, but can't compare to DYLAN!!!!!!!!!!

  • You can't really compare. Dylan's style is rough. Paul Simon's style is pure and angelic. His mature voice can't sound like when he was young, unfortunately.

  • I agree with ramsuz,Mr SIMON has no age.His music has been part of my youth, my past my present and it always be.I hope his songs will be part of my children´s life too.

  • I hope so :)

  • There are very few people in the world that can write songs as good as paul. He is a legend.

  • my god, Paul has gotten so old, but still stays so young.... He's a genius!

  • He does not get old, he does not stay young, he's Paul Simon, Paul Simon has no age, his old and wise yet young and creative.

  • my best friend and i use to sing this song all of the time and i miss him dearly he died 2 years ago at the age of 40. Such a shame he will be misssed ROBO this one is for you ...Half of the time we're gone ...man

  • Good for us.

  • Brilliant song ever

  • I love Paul.

  • This song is so beautiful it never ceases to be amazing everytime.

  • Simon looks like a 10th grade geometry teacher. Or my fathers accountant friend. He is so unassuming, but so rad.

  • this song is TEme everwood" the best serie'

  • Also..The guitarist with sideburns looks alot like a Ted! England?....ummm maybe he is kicking someones arse after each show?

  • The guitarist with sideburns is the most exciting person to watch at Paul Simon's gigs, he switches from vox to guitar to baritone saxophone all in one song- You Can Call me all methinks

  • good call!

  • One of my favourite songs...I always thought the song is blue, every time I listend to it I just get that "blue feeling", and according to paul's choice of sweater he clearly seem to agree. :)

  • brillant !!

  • where can i get this concert video

  • It isn't a commercial video or dvd, it has taken from the British TV

  • S and G touring Australia? Oh man, I'll lose it completely.

  • Where did you hear this? I just checked their website and couldn't find anything.

  • it was in a newspaper. they want to tour their because they never tour in australia before.

  • His voice is still so perfectly clear and smooth...like a fine-tuned instrument.

  • He sings Garfunkel's high vocal part in this version; Paul is really fantastic as a songwritter and singer.

  • what year is this?

  • 2006

  • oh yes....s&g will never die!!! great music...

  • Totally agree with you "gmtobehere"!
