I think it's interesting that this song was released in 1938, the same year that Nazi Gemany invaded chechaslovakia making the invasion of poland that much easier. Thus bringing on a whole lot of nightmares!
does anyone have saxophone note sheet for this? if so, or any instrument at all, i have my sheet list in my channel, over 200 songs for sax or that can be played with sax, if you want to trade note sheets.
Recorded 9/27/1938 on his second recording session for Victor's budget label "Bluebird", Shaw was well on his way to becoming a sensation among fans discovering his music; It had been his theme song since 1936 and went on to become one of his 8 gold records; when gold records meant selling 1,000,000 copies. (Gold now is only 100,000 and a million equals platinum; I guess it's called "inflation".) So....
Nope. No "Let's Dance" or getting sentimental over anything or moonlight serenading. Artie was about the music and as far as that's concerned, that's all that matters. And in 1936 when he formed his first band Artie wrote this simple little 18 bar theme "Nightmare" that showed the world he was going to define his music on his terms and not the dancers or the crowds who came flocking by '38. BRAVO, Artie. (..and this also happened to precede modal jazz by about 15-20 years in the process too).
This song puts a image in my head of a lonely figure in a dark ally stomping to his destination through the night to get his revenge on some person. But thats just what I think of, especially while playing that last level on Bioshock 2.
I have been listening to Shaw and Goodman for over thirty years, and I have yet to come to a conclusion of who I like best. Shaw was cleaner and more technical. Goodman could be as technical, but seemed to have better ideas. Shaw claimed that he was the best, but he was all ego. Hell, who knows.
I used to hear this all the time as a kid: ren and stimpy, Kids in the Hall, and some old movies that aren't comming to mind. I was infatuated with old music from the 20s but there wasn't youtube at my age or anyone thought could guide me since everyone was listening to tupac, B.I.G. or Wu-Tang. I haven't a problem with Biggie or Wu-Tang, still listen to them, but I always felt a bit robbed growing up without select and timeless music like this. May as well have grown up in the styx ; ;
IM ALL FOR OLD MUSIC ITS MUCH BETTER THAN MODERN MUSIC FROM 1990 AND UP BUT FOR THE SONGS MADE FROM 1920's up to 1989 was the best music ever and i only wish there was a way for me to get that record and a record player
When i first heard this song in bioshock, i honestly thought it was a modern composition made to sound old and was quite shocked to see it was done in 38! The song has aged amazing well
I wouldn't go that far. There is some great electronic stuff out there. Try looking away from the Daft Punks and the radio garbage, trust me, it's out there.
@DJMamu I've been around enough to know what I like and don't like. This is all opinion of course DJ. I prefer analog instruments and the sound thereof.
In bioshock 2, I thought this song was "daddy would you please come home" slowed down

@holyu871 music today is bad because they are over doing it with the pop, but in the rock genre they are doing pretty good

It really does add to the ambiance of the entire genre. Digital music making has sterilized music; mostly for the worse.
