When does a rifle become designated "battle rifle" as apposed to assault rifle? is it a matter of cartridge i.e 7.62mm = Battle rifle & 5.56mm = Assault rifle?
Can any rifle be classed as both assault rifle and battle rifle?
If anyone could clear this up it would be greatly appreciated, cheers.
@Ominou5 A battle rifle is a weapon (usually a big rifle, think M1 Garand, FN FAL, Dragunov SVD, etc) chambered in a full-power rifle cartridge, such as 7,62x51 NATO, 7,62x54r etc. It's more powerful, but has greater recoil and the ammunition weights more. An assault rifle (think M16 or AK family) uses a shorter cartridge, such as 7,62x39 or .223 Rem. This provides less punch at longer distances or against armored targets, but has also less recoil, weight, and stress on the gun.
@Ominou5 The term "battle rifle" loosely applies to Western, magazine fed rifles chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. The FN FAL, the CETME/HK G3, and the M14. The original AR-10 would also belong to that group. They are meant to be general issue battle implements, not specialized marksmen or sniper weapons. Weapons like the M21, the SR-25, and the SVD generally are not considered battle rifles even though two of them (M21 and SR-25) are based upon battle rifle designs.
@13thmistral The SCAR-H is liked for it's light weight (compared to other 7.62x51mm rifles), it's rail system, and it's AR-like controls. No one generally fires 7.62x51 out of a rifle on full auto. Full auto generally isn't ever used on rifles to begin with. That's for support weapons that are built to sustain such rates of fire and a heavy enough to be controlled while doing so.
@Nater245689 i kinda agree, though from almost all those other 7.62x51mm rifles like HK G3, FN FAL, IMI GALIL,.....they made variants specificly designed to be used as a squad suport rifle
though those variants do use magazines with a higher capacity of 25-30 rounds, or even a special 50 round drum for the g3 if im not mistaken(was more specific for the HK 21 and HK 11 though)....
this thing shoud be able to be the battle rifle of all battle rifles in every way
@13thmistral The HK 21 was fed from either M13 or DM6 link. The HK 11 was designed to be magazine fed. The 21 could be switch back and forth with an adapter block. They're not service rifles, they're automatic rifles. No one would call the M1918A2 a battle rifle, because it isn't. Even with their increased weight, most of these weapons systems (barring the HK 21) were still generally too light to be effectively controlled on fully automatic.
AT 8:00 to 8:20 in the video it shows a close-up of the very rugged mount. I'm having trouble locating the make and model of this mount. Does anyone know?
Wow- I see that weapons retards are alive and well on Youtube. Some of you twats need to get out of your moms basement and see the world. Start by getting rid of your tampons and join the military. Maybe you will learn a little something about weapons aside from the shit you see on COD.
@MegaLaidback No. The SCAR-L isn't going to be acquired anymore, only the Mk-17 and the Mk-20 along with the mysterious common receiver that no one has seen. The Mk-16 just didn't provide much of an advantage over the M4. It was better in some aspects, inferior in others. The Mk-17 is a different story. It's superior to any of the 7.62 NATO platforms that the US is currently fielding. It should replace the M14 and SR-25 type rifles that are currently in service.
my question is the scar-heavy more accautre then the ak-47? because i kown the ak uses the 7.62mmx39mm and the scar heavy is 7.62mmx51mm and the scar heavy has bigger round and that means recoil im wonder what one it more accutare ak-47? or scar-heavy
@cookies5541 Everything is more accurate than an AK-47. The AK rifles are more accurate than a lot of people would claim, but they are only really effective out to 200m. The 7.62x39mm round drops like a stone and the AK's operating mechanism doesn't help with accuracy. The rifle's sights don't help either.
@Nater245689 everyone underestimates the accuracy and overestimates the reliability. it is reliable but it will still brake if you dont take care of it, but for some reason people think that you dont need to clean and lubricate them, but once you are around them for a while you will learn that that is bullshit. I also do not like the front sights because on all of the rifles that i have seen, the hoods in the sides of the sights liik like a child made them. but it is still a very good rifle.
@HENDRIX19941 I think you probably have little to no experience with actual firearms, particularly the AK. There is no hood on the front sight of an AK, for one thing.
@Nater245689 the parts on the sides of the front post sight. then what are they called? because that is what i have always been told that they were called.
and not to be rude, but please don't insult my intelligence, because i do have a decent amount of experience with them. so if i get a, small term wrong then please tell me what the proper name is so that i can learn it. Ok?
@HENDRIX19941 I know of no name for them. The Chinese produced some AK-clones with hooded front sights, but every European AK that I'm aware of has a non-hooded front sight.
@BRATKOV47KALASHNIKOV No, it's not. First of all, the ammunition. The weapon is a semi-automatic, anti-materiel rifle. It's 9.3x64mm cartridge isn't nearly as good for anti-personnel applications as the .338 Lapua Magnum or .300 Winchester Magnum. It has half the range of the .300 and 1/3 the range of the .338. As an anti-materiel rifle, it falls far behind the M82/M107 Barrett weapons. It doesn't have half the range and it's cartridge isn't nearly as powerful as the .50 BMG.
Further more, the Russians are notorious for overselling their weapons. One needs to look no further than the infamous AN-94 to realize this. That said, I own a few Kalashnikov-style rifles and they're more than adequate. They're more accurate than most think and obviously very reliable. They do have massive short comings in ergonomics and their sights are crude at best.
@monkeyxpwner Overly complex, for one thing. I really doubt it's reliability is anywhere near the AK series of rifles. It's probably a pretty good rifle, but they sell it like some space gun from the future. It isn't.
@Nater245689 yeah i agree, the Russians are known for things that are reliable and just WORK. whenever they try to use " Cutting Edge" technology, they usually dont succeed
@Nater245689 You think the SCAR is overly complex? I own one, as well as many examples of military rifles from the last 100 years. Its no more complex than any other standard battle rifle, and more simple then some. Which component of the SCAR do you feel is overly complex?
@kickmeout1 If you're going to troll, at least learn how to spell, structure sentences, and use punctuation. You're a fine example of how dumb the average person is.
@kickmeout1 Logic fail, troll. You need to do better, a lot better. I had more fun with the idiot that thought Red Dawn was a realistic portrayal of late Cold War geopolitics. Gun ownership /= hillbilly. Not to mention, if I'm a dumb redneck and I think you're an idiot, that says a lot. You can't even do insults well. A troll that can't do insults well is about as useful as tits on a boar.
@Yuric94 what do you mean...? fn is belgian and both the belgian military + police use plenty of fn iron. the scar is used by our cgsu, a special police unit.
@13thmistral I think a 7.62 round from that close would actaully blow your head into tiny pieces. He probably would not have had a head after a shot from so close with a 7.62.
The SCAR is a hell of a rifle, no doubt. But at their price point, I can get a good AR-15, a couple cases of ammo, and a training class. Not saying I wouldn't own a SCAR, but for the time being, the AR has a logisitics advantage that is key to my preferance.
@RaderizDorret I think he means replacement parts and such. It's pretty easy to find parts for direct gas AR-type rifles, probably not so easy for a SCAR. Not to mention the massive amount of aftermarket accessories available for the AR. I'm thinking about getting a SCAR in lieu of a gas piston AR. They're short stroke gas piston rifles from the get go, no problems breaking a seized piston loose with a SCAR. Not so easy with a gas piston AR.
@MrLongbranch303 good damit why always when i talk about others guns say i play call of duty what i need to tell the assault rifle number 1 is the ak 107 o the xm8 i perfer for the ligerest fuck I PLAY YOUST ARMA 2 AND I ALWAYS SERCH MY FAVORITS GUNS AND NOT LIKE A COD FAN BOY
Even though the SCARs are modular thus giving them the ability to be converted to different variants like Standard, Close Quarters Combat and even Sniper Variant, the nature of the .308 caliber will make it very difficult for any rifle to be used as a true assault rifle, that roll is better suited for smaller calibers like the .223. As for the role of a designated marksman, SOCOM's MK-20 SSR (SCAR 17 variant) would be better suited for that role but only time and the battlefield will decide.
I don't think the SCAR cuts it either as an assault rifle or designated marksman rifle. The lightness of the weapon makes the excessive recoil of 7.62 mm difficult to control when firing automatic bursts. As Larry Vickers himself says in this video, it can be a mistake to take a standard assault rifle, stick a sniper scope on it and think you've got a precision rifle. British Army evaluated SCAR-H as a designated marksman rifle and chose the LMT AR-10 rifle instead. Nice try FN, but no cigar.
@Tailpipe26 I just recieved my scar 17, the recoil is just abit over a 5.56 m4. Compaired to a FAL, m14, etc. the weight to recoil comparison w/ the scar is no where close. AS for a designated marksmanship role it would be perfect. also this role, if you had any military background, involes no fully automatic fire, we leave that to the SAW/ 240B type weapons. you should get your hands on this weapon before critcizing, dont let one video take you.
I dont really care for the sniper stuff they show on this... ive got a muzzle that take antelope at 350... 408 with that ten times is ok but 6 would've made me smile.

@JonnyC308 I don''t know...in the videos I've seen the scar 17 seems to have pretty powerful recoil.

Great looking rifle. Wouldn't mind seeing the Mk.17 as the main service rifle in the future!
