my interpretation is it reflects love and the sacrifices ya make to hold onto it. she at the start leaves her surroundings which she knows and trusts and has to adapt to "non-mermaid living"..over the time they encounter hardship and possible pain so in the end it shows how he is willing to adapt to her way of life as he is carrying her in his arms back out to sea for the purpose of saving and holding onto their love :)

Got my personal idea about its meaning.In the beginning,she's taken from the sea,by a man,probably standing for love.Love "bounds" her to a life which is different from a mermaid's one.She's bound to the pain that love may bring.We see her crying in front of him,guess they're fighting.But she misses the freedom you feel when not in love.She tries to find it in the bathtub,but fails. So,in the end,she gives up to the hurt, and leaves love behind,going back to the freedom(sea).My interpretation ;)

@scoobs079 This song made an impact in so many people, it sound pretty well, and the vid is a haunting from start to end. Anyway, it's a lot of a fake in both music and vid. U2 creates that sound and an imagery, you know, but as the years go by i realize what they do. It's all theatre, masquerade... a bit of cold all of it. I love it, but they're a band that invents a fake universe instead expressing the one for real. You'll know.

I tried to explain why the music and the artwork in most U2 productions were hugely related, as it all comes from a conceptual work involving the band and a lot of professionals and creatives, thought. It's very clear if you listen to Atchung Baby. Just take a look of the album artwork, or see some presentations and live shows: all the stuff is heavily related (i know all the bands try to do that, but U2 is specially good at it)....

... so i think, at the bottom of the whole of it (concept, artwork, music, shows...) there's something cold, like it all was part of a cold blooded creative plan. All very well done, but somehow fake. You know, real live is not like run after a girl and swimming in black and white. I mean, it's a cretive license, of course. Everybody (other bands, filmakers,etc.) is doing it. But i've always felt that U2 stuff is specially designed and out of reality, while i still love it.

I remember watching this music video when I was a teenager and I couldn't figure out what the hell it meant. I still can't, but for some reason it feels a lot more meaningful now.

@sckchui The band explained it as Larry falls in love with a mermaid (Samatha Morton) and everything is idyllic until the deer crosses the screen (deer are a common literary symbol for change) and then the relationship turns tense in a way that is similar to what the song talks about. U2 said the strained relationship was a metaphor for the tension of our times.
