  • dreamlike

    and captivating

  • This is one heck of a beautiful song with a whole lot of emotional meaning in it! I wish that music was like this today!

  • @gazono2. Where did you hear that?? Not true, a fan sent him a poem (Mrs. Thompson) and he was so moved he wrote music to it! Look it up! One of Carlys favorite Lps was Frank Sinatras "We Small Hours" which has an excellent version of it!!!

  • I have to agree with Sulynn1955 truly the most haunting and saddest version of this classic song-I tend to burst into tears every time I listen to it and I,m a mature male in my late60s you see many years ago there was a lady friend of mine whom I was emotionally rather mean to-and this song reminds me of those days,so yes this beautiful haunting version actually breaks my heart as the lovely lady whom I owe so much 2 passed away without me having the chance to ever 2 speak with her again-

  • @spoofmusic2010 You are gonna hate this, but Hoagy Carmichael based this whole song on a story about a couple who were married for a lot of years in middle America, but the guy could never ever tell his wife just how much he really loved her, and when she died he wrote these words....

  • This is the best version of this song I have ever heard. So haunting and sad, it brings you to tears.

  • My favorite version by far!

  • When I was a little girl, I wanted to grow up to be Carly Simon lol

I never even know she sang this song. I googled it to find Diana Krawl's version of it, and happened upon this. I think I like Carly's even better.

  • This was when people actually used TALENT to be famous. I wish I grew up back then =(

  • Carly totally nailed this one with true emotion and talent.

  • tommybass40 I am sorry to have to agree with you, I cannot remember the last time i saw an attractive woman who turned my head. That aside, Carly looks stunning in this video, The first time I heard her sing this it literally stopped me in my tracks! Hoagy Carmichael, who wrote this song would have loved this version by Carly

  • Anyone know where I can find a video of the Song Hello Big Man that is on this CD, thanks

  • @glammie4 Hello Big Man is not on this (Torch) cd, but on the Hello Big Man cd! ;-)

  • @treg1980 Do you now anywhere I can see the video. I loved it !!

  • @glammie4 Nope, it used to be here on Youtube. isn't it anymore?

  • It's so beautiful sung so simply. Love it.

  • for me it's the best one ...torch

i love her she is just the best ...

  • absolutely THE best version of this song..... WOW!

I think Rod Stewart was still in hot pants at this time.....

  • One of my all time favourites. such beautiful lyrics.Such a fine rendition....makes me cry! THANKYOU

  • I hardly ever get choked up, but this song does it to me all the time. The melody is so hauntingly sad. Carly Simon is one of the best singers/songwriters in my opinion.

  • A version which can hold it's head up in the company of Nina Simone & Chet Baker, which is saying something (terrible sound quality though...)

  • my companion thru loss

  • Very nice.

  • I LOVE YOU...

  • Have loved Carly since I first heard Anticipation all those years ago. Great singer. Great song.

  • Is is me or are women today not as sophisticated sexy as in the 70's and early 80's?

  • @tommybass40 I feel as though women of the 70s and 80s had something to prove. They weren't as concerned with being sexy but with being taken seriously and looked upon equally as men are in the work force and everything else. Which in turn is the sexiest thing of all, an independent confident woman. But now a lot of women are focused on just being sexy rather than being everything they can be. Which makes it unsexy and trying to hard. People are so consumed with looking younger these days.

  • @tommybass40

Span of time. You're just getting older.

  • Going on faded memory here..... a poem was written by Jane Brown Thompson sent to Hoagy Carmichael. At the time he didn't know who wrote the poem...she may have wanted to stay anonymous, as she didn't sign her name. The poem is based on the loss of her husband who died in WW2. I can't find any info how her identity was finally discovered. Beautiful lyrics indeed. Universal.

  • Such a beautiful and i first heard it when i was a small girl on HBO family of a dog waiting for his owner to come back and it made me cry when i heard it and saw the video. To this day today it still brings a tear to my eye thinking of how beautiful this song truly is. Plus how sad the song is too. :'(

  • torching song...makes me cry...

and yes francois...i get along without you very well.....except.....you truly broke my heart...

  • Hauntingly beautiful... just like Carly herself.

  • Absolutely beautiful.....

  • I think this is the best version of "I Get Along Without Very Well". It's absolutely... impeccable. A beautiful woman singing a beautiful song. What's not to love about it? Cheers!

  • It's a beautiful, quiet sadness.

  • Happy Queen For A Day Elaine! Hope you like this song. It is a favorite of mine.

  • What a beautiful woman, and what a voice. One of our best American singers.

  • Q_Q.......

  • Maybe it's unfair to compare female with male singers, but no one! sings this song like Matt Monro. That's not to discredit Carly's version; it's delightful. Matt had a voice that made me a fan the first time I heard him. Everything he sang was near perfection - smooth, great tonal quality, exquisite phrasing, just the right emotion. You name it, Matt had it. He died in the late 1980's at 54, No one can ever take his place!

  • @skateitalian no sorry, but carly simon's version, THIS version, is the finest rendition of this song to which so many of us can relate. she wonderfully captures the devastated grief and heart-stopping loneliness that is very nearly, but unfortunately not quite, concealed behind a hastily constructed facade of regal hauteur. the arrangement's use of the synthesized intro is reprized, much like a fog horn, adding to the song's haunting gloominess and searing nature. it's pure musical genius.

  • best version in my opinion hers and nina simone

  • Torch is an underrated jewel

  • The great Carly Simon.

She was one of the first to release a record full of covers with a theme to them.

Torch is wonderful, but the best track on this record would be her own composition From The Heart. She should relase a ballad collection with this track on it and name the record after it, so it finally gets the attention it deserves!

  • Over the years I have had many favorites from TORCH, but this one has settled in as my ultimate favorite. Somewhere out there is a claymation video to this track of a little dog waiting patiently for its owner on a rainy day. Someone post it please.

  • @PHX99 - Wow! I remember that vid! I think it was the first time I ever heard this song. Where did I see it? On t.v? Don't remember...

  • @mikwid Me too! It was 30 by 30 kid flicks on HBO family, that was the name of the show. It was a show about kids making movies and submitting them to the show! I do remember the dog clip and it made me sad every time I watched it!

  • @PHX99 I was just telling someone about that video today. That was what introduced me to this song & I have loved it since.

  • @PHX99 w0w - that would be groovy to see. never heard about it.

  • @PHX99 I've seen that too very cute and touching :)

  • As I recall, this was from an interview with Charlie Rose. She talked about recording Torch and played this and one other video.

  • Great Mike Mainieri arrangement of the Hoagy Carmichael classic and beautifully sung!

'Torch' is a lovely album - probably the ultimate torch song collection!!

  • It's a masterpiece!

  • here again to watch and listen to this wonderful wonderful video.

    love it so much.

  • I want you to re make this one too.

    It deserves a comeback.

  • So many bittersweet memories... I never saw this video before, but a few years ago I found "Body And Soul" here in YouTube. It's been removed since, which is a pity because it's a wonderful companion to this. Carly is a feast to eyes and ears.

  • Never seen this before, Thank you for sharing, This is so amazing there are no words

  • your voice

    your voice

    your voice

    i can't explain the beauty.

    thank you so very much.

  • Don't make me pick a favorite song from this album! Torch delivers song after song and never lets up! This album was so ahead of it's time. It is one of the largest gems in Carly's crown.

  • I agree with that sentiment. This is indeed one of my fave Carly albums. If there's any more videos from this album, put them up please!

  • Of all the songs I have EVER heard, in my 67 years of life, the one that broke my heart was 'what shall we do with the child.' (also from the Torch album) I agree - don't ask me to pick a favorite...
