Also your concept of Defensive Fighting is part of the problem. People who stand and fight with an opponent are more likely to get hurt or killed. People should do all they can to avoid conflict but I would never ever recommend anyone fight an armed attacker with anything but a weapon. Does not mean they should not train it but to teach the idea that using a weapon makes one a coward is outrageous and irresponsible.
Obviously bjj is very much grossly overated since its not even a complete art so its stupid to say it is the best, bjj is better as a sport, not something a person should take if he is determine to kill someone with a knife, impact or empty hands. My friend fought a jijutsu practioner from japan....He went to jail because he almost killed the jijutsu practioner. I warned my firned not to use kali methods, but he did'nt listen. the jijutsu practioner was now blind, cracked ribs and missing an ear. I fought a jijutsu using pangumot and won. I'm not trying to be arrogent but thats the truth.
When u say u fought jijutsu, that is VERY different from JiuJitsu, so im not surprised u won using outdated martial arts. Also wrestlers are trained to control , BJJ is trained to finish opponents, and u can't use eskrima when ur mounted and being armbared, also u know how easy it is to gouge someone eyes when ur in side control. I've watched eskrima classes, never taken(seems unrealistic), and theres sooooo many unrealistic predicaments trained
Plus, how can you say a pencil fight is not realistic? By reading that comment, it shows how ignorant you are when it comes to a fight with no rules, people often carry implements such as pencils, pens, books, combs, and concealable weapons like balisongs, switchblades, knves ect. eskrima gets you prepared for that. unlike bjj when you don't know if he actually has that. and next you know he gets you with a suprise attack before you can disarm him because you didn't take eskrima.

eskrima's "wrestling" is useful against stagnant opponents, and the grappling is at a white belt level compared to BJJ, also what i constantly see in the video above and other highlights is that a person's stick use becomes negated as soon as someone gets an overhook,guard pull, takedown and thats because BJJ is the single most efficient art out there. It's not realistic to train getting in a pencil fight, but if it happens a takedown/overhook works lol

I know that bjj is used in military too but its not great when taking down multiple oppents and isn't as dirty. bjj is good for fights in the ring but not so great when on the street. it's easy for a lot of people to talk shit without having done any research on the dog brothers. these guys are smart guys. several of the original members hold ph.d's in philosophy, theology, architecture, political science, etc. when dog brothers first started, it combined rigorous training in escrima, krabi krabong, muay thai, jiu jitsu, kali, spad y daga, boxing, and a variety of other disciplines. saltydog himself is an ajarn, which is one of the highest ranks within krabi krabong. read up.

I'm a Filipino Kali Practitioner, I have nothing but respect to the Dog Brothers. This is what the Filipino Martial Art is about - full contact if needed fight to the death battle. Sadly, most of the FMA outside the Philippines have gone weak. I even know some schools that doesn't do sparring.
Why not go all out and take out the helmet, hand pads and knee pads, BUT wear some eye protection. That way they will be a little more hesitant to attack and flail away. One, two or three hits from the stick should stop the fight and I bet there will be no need to go to the ground!!

Actually I am a fighter. You know the ones that compete? If your saying a fight "in the street" than yes I've been in those as well, but no one has been stupid enough to try me in the past few years. Eskrima can be negated as soon as your taken down. Also, If someone comes at you with a stick and your empty handed u don't fight them. That's like saying If i have a pistol and expect someone with a stick to fight me, thats ludicrous.
When you have bad JiuJitsu as I'm assuming you must have, then it's useless, but that is your uselessness not the art's. This sport seems great and honest at first it looked a little foolish, but people have said the same about MMA so I would be willing to try this out. Eskrima is good for stick fighting this sport, but certainly not for an even fight. Plus I've seen plenty guys eskrima get negated once they're taken down (BJJ is THE Law of Martial Arts)

But check out the SCA and find out how to make a real helm. Note: the SCA helm bars are legally required to be closer together than the width of the stick, so it can't get through.
Guys, join the SCA, make or buy yourself some armour, and learn some control and learn how to fight safely.
THEN, if you want to mix up SCA / Escrima / BJJ, or whatever home brew grabs your pants, do that. Train, slowly and safely, and work on technique, and then suit up and spar.
But you might find your SCA gives you bruises, pain, fun, and controlled violence, and that might be just what you're after anyway.

(con't) I also like to train with the regular baseball bat and use it like a bo and a sword, or just go nuts on the heavy bag. make sure you cover the bag with an blanket or something for added protection so the bag won't bust.
Someone should one up and enter the tournament with two miniature baseball bats. Guaranteed victory. That's what I'm training with these days . It is more intimidating than sticks and it builds the wrist. Your swings will be way fast once you go back to sticks, but you have no reason to go back. It's also good for toning and strengthening the arms. One to the knee cap and one to the face. These guys are tough, they can probably take a baseball bat to the head.

You´d be better learn to inform yourself about someone or something you don´t understand and THEN make up an opinion. Have a talk with sum Dogs and you´ll see they are outstanding characters and respectable people, more than U seem to be.
These guys are definitely tough and mix MMA with the stick techniques, but rarely would two combatants attack each other so suicidally with live blades. Nobody is going to toss their blade and tackle while the other guy has two blades in hand.
Consider why other PTK luminaries such as Tom Bisio (won the 1st full contact tournament in Phillipines) and Bill McGrath don't focus primarily on just the "full contact(with helmet and pads!)" training. Still hats off to Eric (great technician and fighter) and the pack for putting it out there-we are all part of the same PTK family!!!
I am a student of Dave Wink , Eric Knaus' (Top Dog) former training partner under Leo Gaje; I have trained "Dog Brothers" full contact and know it has its place and is a very useful approximation of live blade but is not a full substitute for live blade and distance sparring. I think Leo and traditional masters who fought death matches and trained with live blade would agree.

eskrima's "wrestling" is useful against stagnant opponents, and the grappling is at a white belt level compared to BJJ, also what i constantly see in the video above and other highlights is that a person's stick use becomes negated as soon as someone gets an overhook,guard pull, takedown and thats because BJJ is the single most efficient art out there. It's not realistic to train getting in a pencil fight, but if it happens a takedown/overhook works lol

@ImpassableGuardJJ Thats because there are rules in fights like this, plus they are not very acumen with eskrima, in a fight with no rules, man with sticks triumph with guy with none, end of story for that. eskrima/arnis/kali isn't exactly one art, it is a huge as system. I have to say that eskrimas wrestling (dumpag) is known to be alot more lethal then jitjutsu. Its stupid to think taht bjj has anything on eskrima just saying.

I know that bjj is used in military too but its not great when taking down multiple oppents and isn't as dirty. bjj is good for fights in the ring but not so great when on the street. Unlike bjj eskrima uses implement weapons and empty hands which can most likely get you prepared in a life or death situation compared to any fighting system including krav maga.

it's easy for a lot of people to talk shit without having done any research on the dog brothers. these guys are smart guys. several of the original members hold ph.d's in philosophy, theology, architecture, political science, etc. when dog brothers first started, it combined rigorous training in escrima, krabi krabong, muay thai, jiu jitsu, kali, spad y daga, boxing, and a variety of other disciplines. saltydog himself is an ajarn, which is one of the highest ranks within krabi krabong. read up.

I'm a Filipino Kali Practitioner, I have nothing but respect to the Dog Brothers. This is what the Filipino Martial Art is about - full contact if needed fight to the death battle. Sadly, most of the FMA outside the Philippines have gone weak. I even know some schools that doesn't do sparring.

Why not go all out and take out the helmet, hand pads and knee pads, BUT wear some eye protection. That way they will be a little more hesitant to attack and flail away. One, two or three hits from the stick should stop the fight and I bet there will be no need to go to the ground!!

all of them say the same thing, in a real fight you only have a few seconds, alot of the skill you train in the gym stays in the gym,u need to learn to have a powerful attack with simultaneous defence and protection with the other hand, believe me its not as eaasy as u think

Actually I am a fighter. You know the ones that compete? If your saying a fight "in the street" than yes I've been in those as well, but no one has been stupid enough to try me in the past few years. Eskrima can be negated as soon as your taken down. Also, If someone comes at you with a stick and your empty handed u don't fight them. That's like saying If i have a pistol and expect someone with a stick to fight me, thats ludicrous.

When you have bad JiuJitsu as I'm assuming you must have, then it's useless, but that is your uselessness not the art's. This sport seems great and honest at first it looked a little foolish, but people have said the same about MMA so I would be willing to try this out. Eskrima is good for stick fighting this sport, but certainly not for an even fight. Plus I've seen plenty guys eskrima get negated once they're taken down (BJJ is THE Law of Martial Arts)

Seriously, fencing masks for stick fighting? What were you *thinking*? Even motorbike helmets with iron bars welded on to make a grill would be better. But check out the SCA and find out how to make a real helm. Note: the SCA helm bars are legally required to be closer together than the width of the stick, so it can't get through.

Guys, join the SCA, make or buy yourself some armour, and learn some control and learn how to fight safely.
THEN, if you want to mix up SCA / Escrima / BJJ, or whatever home brew grabs your pants, do that. Train, slowly and safely, and work on technique, and then suit up and spar.
But you might find your SCA gives you bruises, pain, fun, and controlled violence, and that might be just what you're after anyway.

Someone should one up and enter the tournament with two miniature baseball bats. Guaranteed victory. That's what I'm training with these days . It is more intimidating than sticks and it builds the wrist. Your swings will be way fast once you go back to sticks, but you have no reason to go back. It's also good for toning and strengthening the arms. One to the knee cap and one to the face. These guys are tough, they can probably take a baseball bat to the head.

These guys are definitely tough and mix MMA with the stick techniques, but rarely would two combatants attack each other so suicidally with live blades. Nobody is going to toss their blade and tackle while the other guy has two blades in hand.

I've trained in authentic JKD under Gary Dill. But I think some of my moves would be illegal under your rules.
I would have to modify my technique too much. This is real street fighting, it's brawling.

Consider why other PTK luminaries such as Tom Bisio (won the 1st full contact tournament in Phillipines) and Bill McGrath don't focus primarily on just the "full contact(with helmet and pads!)" training. Still hats off to Eric (great technician and fighter) and the pack for putting it out there-we are all part of the same PTK family!!!

I am a student of Dave Wink , Eric Knaus' (Top Dog) former training partner under Leo Gaje; I have trained "Dog Brothers" full contact and know it has its place and is a very useful approximation of live blade but is not a full substitute for live blade and distance sparring. I think Leo and traditional masters who fought death matches and trained with live blade would agree.

ive done this at home, minus the pads, great fun, but now nobody will train with me. they say it hurts too much to get hit, i figure im training my nerves to avoid getting hit, works so far, im a big guy but i can dodge like a mofo. but i can also take a hard hit to the head or body or limbs. great fun.
