  • Hey man u inspired me to start mine! I'm one the start of week two! Ha! Got a long time to go! Got any hints for just starting?

  • hey, does it affect the process if i scratch or touch my hair? eg/ moving my fringe out of my face. and how do i wash with shampoo? does i just massage it in then rinse? and how do you dry it?

  • hey jeremy what is is your facebook??? I can add you?

  • hey JEREMY I can start to wash my hair I have 2 weeks and I'm using organic coconut soap but I know that the soap is soap in my country peru Dr.bonner there I can use jeremy ... I recommend chris please greetings

  • what can i use when i want natural locks?...i have to just dont wash my hairs or i need some soaps/shampoo?

  • @freeskiingbmx You can definitely use shampoo, just be sure to rinse it well. :-)

  • what shampoo did you use if any when you first started?..

  • @FlipZ162 I'm pretty sure it was Dr. Bronner soap, and Prell Classic. :-)

  • @eyeheartchrist is the liquid one good too?

  • @FlipZ162 yes I've used both :-)

  • Comment removed

  • @eyeheartchrist haha ok thnx :)

  • Are you completely against back-combing or was it just a preferential decision to go the natural route?

  • @NJ4m3s I decided to go another route, and it turns out it worked better for my hair. :-)

  • @NJ4m3s For the most part. Feel free to check out my latest video "4 Years/48 Months Extravaganza! Lock Dread Lock Rock!" Which should be live one you read this. :-)

  • brother please give me a reply,

ive been neglecting for 2 monthes now, hairs abit longer than yours in this video. i wash it once a week with dry shampoo.

im simply seeing no results at all, hairs kinda tangled but im sure itd brush out with ease, i scratch my head a good bit though is that bad? i just dont know what im doing wrong, any thoughts wood be appreciated =]

    peace

  • @TrailerTrashThorne hmmm...I've never used dry shampoo, so I wouldn't know about what to do with that. Two months is still starting out with your hair, because it doesn't really have a time frame as to when it starts to locks up, it just does when it does. You are doing everything you should be doing at the moment, just be sure to check to make sure your hair isn't forming large areas of matting or knotting, so simply pull it all apart in sections as it grows and forms. (Next Message)

  • @TrailerTrashThorne (Continued) Scratching your head won't bother it, just be sure to wash it when it needs washed. Everything will be fine, just be patient. :-)

  • @eyeheartchrist thankyou very much bro, i just gotta stay in it for the long haul then =] which is a big part of why im doing it, testing my patience (its therapy almost) keep it easy!

  • hmm. I buzzed my long hair off in October to grow my hair completely naturally and it is now march 11 and I wash my hair every 3-4 days with organic soap but my hair doesn't knot-up at ALL. Every time I get out of the shower (even when I don't wash my hair) it looks like I just combed my hair. How did your hair knot up so quickly in this video? It looks like my hair just a tiny bit longer than yours was in this.

  • @geragna organic or chemical soap removes most of the natural oli on your head thus making it hardet to knot up.

hope you are having succes with your dreads and try not using soap...

People need to learn that soap is soap.

  • @svampebob007 Good point lol. Thanks for the reply man

  • @svampebob007 Well, I never had that much trouble with Organic shampoo, but since then, which is about 4 years from the posting of this video, I've changed it up quite a bit. The thing I don't like about Dr. Bronner soap is the soap scum that builds up on the bath tub, and mentally, that doesnt' seem to be a good idea to put in hair and on the scalp. Other than that, great soap! I've been using Apple Pectin, which is usually found at stores like Sally Beauty Supply, but definitely check online.

  • @eyeheartchrist huh, I never managed to get dreads with shampoo, but my hair is quite smooth to begin with. since I stoped using shampoo they have started to dread :D

I wouldn't recomend shampoo, because I see that as a pointless thing to put on your head when you can just use water.

  • what was your hair type

  • dude ive just watched through some of your videos. the progress is amazing. i love your dreads an hope mine will look as good one day :)

  • Did u get all those small dreads in one month?

    How??

  • like how long does it have to be to start and soo u didnt use like crochet or backcomb?

  • My hair's already shoulder length. If I just stop combing will it still work? Or do I have to absolutely cut it

  • @HeartOfAllThings Your hair is fine at the current length. In fact you will see progress happen sooner. Take at look at the 3 year timeline i have posted, and imagine cutting it by half the time, and you should be able to imagine how long it will take to lock up. Of course, don't take my word on how long the entire thing takes to lock up, but you will see results a lot sooner than I did. :-)

  • dude how did you get the baby dreads soo quickly when your hair is that short ... im starting the neglect method right now and my hair is the same lenth .. did you like palm roll or somthing?

  • @seabasscn I used to mess with it, but ultimately that's not what caused it to lock up...time did it.

  • haha i know this isnt a smart question, but i was wondering if during the process of getting all natural dreads like yours, you could use regular shampoo?

  • @420dreadlockrasta1 yes, I use Prell Classic for every time I wash. :-)

  • i have just completely shaved my hair right down to a number 2 or something from here on its nattyness all the way :)

  • Hmm.. i think ill try to just let it be instead of paying some dude to do it for me, haha i just need to get the shampoo, thanks a lot :)

  • @SuckMyKrow right on! Prell Classic is a safe solution for washing your head, and leaves no soap scum either! Clean hair is the way! :-)

  • @eyeheartchrist ah cool thanks man :)

  • hola disculpa osea puedo lavar mi cabello con solo jabon y debo de secarlo o solo dejo que seque solo?

  • yoo i remember that one time i touched my hair nd like there was a dread lock just one a perfect formed like my hair is long nd idk how the heck i got that nd at the sides of my head my hair was getting like hard....nd i wash my hair every day..but then i noticed that was because i didnt brush it so it got all messed up but that lil lock wanted me to do dreads man..i want dreand soo bad =)

  • hell yeah ive watched all your dread videos inspiration!!! thanks man

  • heh, thats exactly how my hair looks like right now. 1st month. i cut it to about your length.

  • @NightOwlAlleyCat Keep it up! have you seen my latest update? it's called 31 Months of Nothingness! :-)

  • Do you need to have straight hair or does it work as well if you have.. like medium curly hair?

  • It doesn't matter, just let time form locks on its own. You should definitely consider checking out my latest update called 31 Months of Nothingness!

  • what do u need to do the dreads??

  • Nothing. Just let it do its thing, and once it starts to lock into sections, pull away hairs that are causing one lock to form with another. Wash it as often as needed(personally once a week), Don't put anything in it!(no wax, nothing). That's about it. Of course, there is backcombing, but same result after years, except to be honest there is no use messing with it since it's going to take its time to lock up anyways.

  • how many days did you wait once you decided to get dreads to wash it? & how do you wash it?

i decied to start today but idk how long to wait to wash it or how to wash it

    thanks

  • not setting up, just start washing with the right soap and don't give a care one bit. :-)

  • Nothing. I just wash it.

  • So this was your first video on your journey? Great

5 stars, well, look at my first, but ignore that about not shower please :)

  • Totally understandable! :-)

  • did you put your dreads in a hat or wrapped them up when you slept?

  • Nope, just throw it away from my head so I can lay on the pillow right. :-P

  • Right on man hah thanks again hah! You're really helping lol Once I get at a month I'm gonna start posting vids too!

  • alrighty! Can't wait :-)

  • just started like a week ago an already got a couple starting to lock together i hope they turn out as cool as urs in the future

  • yep, as long as you let it do its thing, can't go wrong. :-)

  • I've been watching your videos backwards(Don't ask why) and It seems like it took forever to really Lock. You say that you want it to change naturally but wouldn't of just been easier to back comb and adjust your washing style? I mean it's basically doing the same thing just helping the lock process along.

  • nope, it would have been harder for it to lock if I did anything to it. Most people think Backcombing helps, but it really doesn't, it just changes the shape of them in the future, unless they congo together with other locks.

  • any tips for the first month?

  • Never comb it, wash when it needs washed, that's it.

  • Thanks man!

  • no problem :-)

  • You're a major inspiration I'm starting my natural dreads today!

  • so all u did was not brush your hair

did u palmroll or anything ?

  • no palmrolling. Check out the latest videos, I'm at 2 years now.

  • For one thing, starting in April, that's still the very beginning. Try a couple of years of letting it grow and knot up. Trust me, when it picks up, it Reaaaaly picks up. Oh btw I have a new posting up if you'd like to see it. :-P

  • hey. i was jus wandering. my hair is about 4inches now. but some parts of it arent the same length. so what should i do? or should i start right away? and when u mean don wash ur hair, do u not run em through water at all or jus not use shampoo? cheers bro. nice locks

  • Start right away if you'd like, you can wash whenever necessary, and it definitely matters what you wash with, because you don't want residue left behind. Of course you can always do Apple Cider Vinegar rinses once in a while for good measure. :-)

  • dude, how old were you back then? i can't believe that i've been watching your vids for about an year and half or so.. you're a total inspiration! your dreads look beautyful!

  • probably 22 I forget. :-P

  • 22? :O you looked like you were 17 :))

  • I'm glad to know people think that, but yeah I'm 24 now. :-)

  • u must of had good lenght wen u started growing it....

  • Nah this is the genesis of it. Check out the latest videos if you'd like. I've got a 22 month post on here if you'd like to check that out. :-)

  • yeah i'll have a look.... im tryin to grow my hair but i started about a month ago wit a buzz cut nd its not gettin as long as urs... 2 tell u the truth im jealous lol

  • nah man it may be even better that you started with nearly nothing on your head, then you can also see what you hair would do if it's uncombed, right when it starts to actually grow.

  • This might sound really dense, but when you wash your hair I take it you avoid running your hands through it and instead just massage it in?

  • massage the scalp? Yes that's what I mean. Oh by the way, wanna check out the latest video? Go to my main profile page, or to your left, and you'll find the latest update...which is 22 months. :-)

  • I have a question. When I begin neglecting my hair, can I wash it, or do I have to wait til my hair starts dreading. If i can wash them in the beginning, how often?

    thanks

  • You can wash it whenever you feel like it, seriously! However, the longer it gets, the less you'll end up washing it, just because it's not necessary to wash it as often, and it takes a long time for it to dry. Personally, when my scalp starts complaining, it's time to wash, which is about once a week.

  • what do you do for sleeping?

  • I pull the covers enough to slip in, lay down, close my eyes, start a breathing pattern, then take a trip to dreamland. :-P I say that because it's not as complicated as people think, just don't sweat it! The ONLY people that have to worry about this kind of stuff is People With WAX In The Hair. ha.

  • im 16 and its kinda ahrd to grow dreads. being in school and all i cant really wash them like i want to so i wash them every 2 months but over the summer i think ill be able to grow them more. started them since july 09

  • Wash it whenever necessary, people think you can't but that's totally false, unless you have African/Afro texture. There are so many misconceptions and myths, it's pathetic! Just let it go, don't care what it does, and if necessary rip locks apart if they become too big by your personal preference.

  • can u wear normal headbands while in the negelect stage can i wear them alot, so i was wondering if it make it longer to lock, or if it would hurt my dreads?

  • Do whatever you want.

  • can you ever take a shower with them and let them get wet?

  • Yes, it's hair, so yes.

  • so the locks wont get fucked up?

  • nope. Just let it grow forever, don't worry about it. that's it. :-)

  • wat do u tell ur parents to try to convince them to let you have them

  • They don't mind it. I have a 20 month video post if you'd like to see where it is now. :-)

  • i had presented the idea to them and they completely shot it down

  • Wait until you are older, I did, considering I was 22 years old in this video(24 now). By that time, you have a right to do whatever you want with your hair. Or if you can, keep on convincing them you really want to lock your hair, but I'm sure you'll find a way. Promise you'll keep it clean, maybe? :-)

  • thanks and i think its cool u love jesus

  • All that love Him are cool in His eyes. :-)

  • how often do you do the massage in the hair stuff

  • hmmm?

  • will this work if my hair is a little over 1 inch long? will just regular bar soap work to wash with? thank you

  • Start right away. Toss the comb in the trash, allow your hair to grow from this point on, wash when necessary. I recommend natural/organic soap since you don't want residues to hang in locks. BUT, that's a common thing over time, so the best way to avoid it, do Apple Cider Vinegar rinses periodically, by spraying on your head and hair until it's dripping. Massage your scalp while the vinegar is sprayed on. Keep it in your hair for 30 minutes, Rinse. It's all very easy, so start right away! :-).

  • longer more locked hair suits you way better man

  • Gotta start somewhere, sometime. One has to let their hair grow for it to lock so yeah. :-)

  • nocie but ur camara sounds like a can opener or somthing lol

  • gotta love them old school 8mm cams :-P

Have you seen my latest videos? They cool too!

  • Hi,i want your hair.....OH nvm...I couldnt really find a vid where it says how do you make it so the hair sticks up in locks????Im completely new to this i have a medium-curly hair and i would really like it,cuz my hair doesnt passes to no style it just jumps back if i use that gel for styling....my hair is long about 2 inches, and i look like a deep with tht hair i currently have...not really but i always hide them in the morning,so i just put them up in the school...

  • It's verrrry simple. But before I tell you how, I have a bunch of new updates than this..in fact I'm suppose to be posting an 18 month post today.

It's all about not messing with your hair at all. The roots will be fine, just make sure to not run your fingers through the shafts of the hair. Wash with natural/organic soap so that your hair will knot up the best it can get, without petrochemicals left behind in your hair. I have more to explain but I'll leave it at this for now. :-)

  • how do u wash the hair with a soap....do u rubb it into the hair and then just shower on the head without touching it?Oh and can i get hair like that in 1 month?I tryed rubbing a sock on my head i readed that somwere....well they just get curlier XD.Oh how do you sleep with that?Doesnt when you move your head while asleep the hair just emm well gets normal?srry for my english but not in the mod righ now...

  • when using liquid soap, using the palms to get it on your head, then use the fingers to make sure you get all your head scrubbed good. Bar soap is easier to use in my opinion, but I've learned to use both easy after 18 months.

Don't worry about your hair when sleeping, it will be fine no matter what. Just let it grow, never comb it, get into the cycle of washing less and less until you are washing only once a week, so that your scalp doesn't react negatively to the change.

  • Thanks u relly helping me :) Dont the hair gets dirty after gets dirty in 6 days...especially when making sport.....:P

  • Nah you'll be fine. If it's actually dirty, wash it, but unless you are getting in the mud and dirt, then you'll be fine. So your scalp doesn't react negatively to the cycle, wash every other day for a week, then two days, then so on. Do it slowly so your scalp has time to not produce scalp oil as fast as it would if you washed everyday. So therefore, it doesn't get as oily after it locks up in a couple of years. :-)

  • Thanks,i think thats all i gotta know :)

  • yay im at one month now ^o^

  • keep up the good work :-)

  • Mkaj :)

  • wow big change from 1 month to 12

  • I rather backcomb

and wait a couple months for them to look good.

  • who cares how they look? seriously...

Go check out my latest video..you'll see one day what I mean..

    /watch?v=kodgiJedko0

  • I would do this if my hair weren't retarded. I washed with dread soap and didn't brush for almost a year, and there were almost no knots in my hair. So I'm backcombing.

  • Sounds like you weren't washing with the right stuff..Some people it takes longer. I hope it's not too late to reconsider, it will be worth it to be patient and let it lock :-)

  • How do you get/start them? I saw all your videos and at the 9 months it looks sick. Help?

  • 1. Throw away the comb

    2. Never run your fingers through it

    3. Only wash once a week with soap that doesn't leave residue behind(such as organic soap)

    4. Let em grow. :-)

  • when you first started do you just not comb your hair at all and it will lockup or do you have to have special soap and still not comb it. i really want dreads.

  • You for real aint you. I thought it was a joke. More power to you.

  • Hey man, I'm just curious as to why you didn't back-comb your hair to start your dreads?

I have been growing my hair for just over a year now, to get dreads, and I have never considered any method other than back-combing.

  • First, refer to my latest post "Anticipate! Month Number 8! Dreadlock Mania"

Second, I tried backcombing twice, and turned out to be a big disappointment, twice.

I've learned to embrace the natty and just let it grow. It has more character to it then opposed to backcombed(since backcombed makes similar sizes). Everyone's hair does differently, so to let it grow on its own, it's going to be unique, and NO wax in it!

I will be posting a new video soon on the 16th, so check back soon! :-)

  • hey, i have asian straight hair as long as urs in this vid, how do i start/take care of my hair to lock? just buy the shampoo? my friends told me i should just go to the salon =/

  • from what I've heard..most people that got their hair done at a salon..they end up starting all over and trying something different.

Allow me to message you elsewhere instead of here for better detail because there comment boxes don't allow much room for typing.

But to answer your question, just make sure you wash atleast 1-3 times a week with Organic soap(liquid or bar whichever), drbronner dot com would be a good place to look. I'll message the rest to you in a second.

  • hah, alright fer sure dawg.

ill B sure check it out.

  • how long was your hair when it initially started to knot up?

  • about 3 months into it...Go check out my latest video "7 Months Natty Journey! Don't Stop Believin'"

  • nice

so how long was it whe u started those 3 months?

    mustof been pretty short

  • basically what you see in this video is when the whole thing began. I'm posting a new video on the 16th, so keep checking for it. :-)

  • and the point of that was...

  • go LOOK @ my latest video, dat's why I add video responses to each of the progress videos. I mean look @ the date of when da video was posted.ther is an actual goal 2 all of this.if u would go look @ da latest video(7 months),u can clearly see dat I'm n fact progressing 2 da "point" of why I posted a 1 month then so on posts, 2 show wher I started, & how it's getting a long. I must apologize to u, it just gets annoying after a while to tell people this when they won't pay attention to detail.

  • nu kuto hanap?

  • excuse me? I can only speak English.

  • i have almost the same exact hair type as you. so how long was it when you started letting it go? i am very interested in letting my hair be free and letting it dread. i think it is the best hair style. and for me it symbolizes freedom. haha

  • in this video, that was the actual length I started with. I used wool and rubbed my hair into locks...I still wish I would have just left it alone in the beginning, but it's really start to take off now. :-)

  • so i just leave it alone? i havent combed my hair since i cut it maybe a month or two ago. and it seems that if it was a couple inches longer it would start a little. so i guess i should just leave it alone. but i would like to find a natural shampoo for my hair.

  • yea and i found out that if you only wash twice a week, it allows the hair to knot up a lot quicker and easier. Washing it too much/getting it wet too much will not let it form as quick and easy as it's suppose to be. Hair doesn't necessarily need washed as much, it's the scalp, so try once or twice a week, and wash it good when you do, and don't let your fingers run through it, just use the towel to draw the water out.

  • just work on them an maintain lazy white people should kill each other off the face of jah world

  • ...go look at my latest video. That's all from just letting it grow and keeping it clean. it's called "7 Months Natty Journey: Don't Stop Believin'!"

  • i wash my hair with aloe is a healty herb for everthing many people recomned that for the hair and is natural ;)

  • i would if I had some. :-) by the way, I posted my latest update this month, you should go check it out! It's at 7 Months.

  • did u wash your hair

  • yep....go look at my latest video (7 Months)

  • hey man my hairs about 2.5 inches max, and i just started rubbin it and usin a bit of bees wax. i dont wash my hair normally, but i guess ill start now if it helps the dreading process. shud i just keep rubbing clockwise until sum locks start forming? any other methods u wud suggest?

  • don't, I mean it, don't use wax at all..just grow it, never comb it, wash it once or twice a week with an organic shampoo, invest in some beanies for your hair. that's all there is

  • oh, and go check out my latest video, it's been 7 months so far, so check it! :-)

  • Me encantan las rastas, pero eso es de rañoso!!

  • how did u start it so nicely?

  • wool, rubbing it clockwise. my hair happened to be long enough to do so around the top, back, and sides. the only thing I couldn't get done was the very bottom layer around my head, but it's locking up with the rest. All I do now is just let it grow and wash it every 2-3 days. :-)

  • oh and go check my latest video, it basically shows how long my hair is now. :-)

  • well I am growing it. go check my latest vid and compare the two, it's growing like crazy! :-)

  • i'm not trying to be rude or something but youre making too much effort to show something than can be barely seen. anyway i'm glad you didnt take my first post in a bad way.

i hope your dreading goes ok, but my here's my advice: grow it and then start dreading it, natural or theknottyboy way. as far as i know (and have experienced) hair grows faster the less split ends it has, and dreading will produce that shit. so get it long and then start dreading . good luck

  • there's no effort to it, that's what I'm saying..all you do is wash it every other day or so, and that's it.

  • and I'm just showing how it looks now, cause then I or whoever can look back at how it use to look before it got long. :-)

  • I tried to let mine dread naturally one time. About 3 months in they started to dread up nice but it was mainly 3 large parts that were kinda flat like pancakes. =[ It was all nice and tight but it wasn't quite what I wanted.

  • just keep letting it grow, never comb it, and wash with with right stuff, that's all. I have super straight hair, although it's starting to curl, so.

  • those pancake dreads will round out over time, so don't worry about that. :-)

  • Soon your hair will look like mine (check my vid)

  • Looks good :) Interesting that they are locking so well in hair that short.

  • yea I hope it grows a good amount when Winter rolls around, that would be rad! :-)

  • when my hair goes crazy through the wind, and I'm skating in the afternoon, it looks like a fro, and people mistakingly think that's what I'm achieiving. :-)

  • nice start man! i bet your hair will look much better than mine when it grows longer! and always keep us updated.. jah bless!

  • yes it's gonna be so exciting to see it grow month after month with monthly video posts! :-)

  • Just so everyone knows, I was examining my hair this evening, and discovered bigger dreadies compared when I made the video! AND some of them are getting tighter at the root too! woot woot!

  • sweet but y dont you use the backcombing medod it much faster??

  • could, but I already did, and hated it. I'm not going through
