I like to think that the film cut out because there was no way the censors were gonna allow that much killing on the screen at once, it was just horrific. I mean, two guys killing the entire army would have been too much, it would have made saving private ryan look like nothing.
It may not seem like it, but this is bromance, possibly at its finest. This is the inevitability of death but also the ability to fuck around with and joke with the idea of death because the man by your side is the one you'd like to die with. Butch / Sundance win.
O.K WHAT THE FUCK? that stupid part at the end ruins it man... take that shit out it doesn't fit and ruins one of the best scenes in one of the best movies ever made. Please and thank you.
@modrenwarefare yea the Bolivians were just being really careful/vengeful (think, like in the previous scene, Butch and Kid killed like 20 Bolivianos each)and wanted to make sure both men stayed dead...
@pix042 well there are persistent rumours that they survived, and their bodies were never recovered. Furthermore, growing up in such harsh times, it was only natural for some people to turn to crime in order to survive. Let's not forget that Butch and Sundance were not as bad as some outlaws of the day, since they never actually harmed any of their victims. Don't forget there were plenty of greedy corporation owners screwing over far more people, but you don't see them getting shot do you?
I hated the ending!! They both died!! So sad!! I watched this in my histpry class!! Pretty good except for the ending!! They shuldve surrendered and be like in jail or sumthin!
* UPDATE* They both made it! Historian Professor Sidney T.Hackenflush of Broken Wheel college in Hartford Conn. in his research states the following"
The very fact is that they both shot out the whole Bolivian Army, with just two guns, they then went to a local pharmacist, and bought iodine and band-aids for their wounds, got two passports and off they went to Australia! Historians are trying to keep that very fact from you. It's a conspiracy of silence, but you've been told here! No Charge!☺
There something about this masterpiece last scene that makes my heart ache everytime I see it. So sad and funny at the same time, knowing what's in for them :(
@eringryffin I love that my mother, however much she loved this film, could not watch the ending. She really loved those two guys. I don't blame her one bit.
in the director's commentary they said they really wanted to give some realism to the last fight sequence , with them reloading bullets , and not shooting the guns like they had infinite ammo.
Geo Roy Hill made exactly the right decision about how to end this movie--he didnt turn into another Bonnie and Clyde blood bath; he was right to leave it as a romanitc tribute to the outlaw.
I apologize for ruining it... But I throw a similar end onto most videos that I put a bit of time into putting up. easier for people to get more... sorry
it was the army, they happend to be passing the village to go face the amreican army and got called to help out because 6 policemen had been killed in the inital gunfight
Thats how I wanna go.

Know what I think happens? I think it turns out that the Bolivian Army shoots like Greedo and the stormtroopers from Star Wars.
