One of the most pleasurable moments of my life was that i did visit him at his and Elodia's house - we talked story, played music and ate chinese food. Thanx Ray - RIP
One of the greatest disappointments of my life is that I couldn't get to visit him. Fortunately I do have all his recordings and I copied the video tape to cd before it became worn out. Slack key at its absolute best.
Mahalo,Breezepls for that information. I love that video. Now I can have it and enjoy it as much as I like. I can tell you have that Aloha Spirit the Hawaiians talk about. God bless you.
The previous clip with Raymond Kane dancing to the music of leward K. was a clip taken from a wybe tv special that also included Diana Aki. Does anyone know the name of that video or how I might obtain it. Thank you. Raymond Kane was great and surely will be missed.
Sorry for the delay in replying; just noticed your question.
The clip is from a video, now out in DVD: "Ki Ho'alu: That's Slack Key Guitar." It should be available anywhere they have Hawaiian music, or online at Amazon.
The very first time I saw Uncle he was playing music in Berkeley at the Freight. I studied his fingers closely because I knew that he was playing in a tuning that was strange to me. I thought he would never divulge the secret of his slack key guitar style tuning to me but he must have seen me and knew what I was thinking ...during the intermission he gave me a piece of paper that had his style of slack key tuning. I will never forget him as long as I live. A great man! Mahalo Nui Loa Uncle Ray!
Ray Kane, named one of USA's national treasures by Pres. Bill Clinton, was one of the main exponents of "kihoalu" or Hawaiian slack key guitar. "Kihoalu" began in the early 1820's in Kamuela on the Big Island when the Parker Ranch hired Spanish vaqueros from California to teach our future "paniolos" how to rope, ride and play the Spanish guitar. The Hawaiians slackened the strings and made new tunings.
Ray Kane kept that 200 year art alive. Mr. Kane will be sorely missed. Aloha Ray Kane.
God Bless Elodia and the family. Mahalo for your beautiful aloha to all of us who love Hawaiian music. We all appreciate you so much. So much joy from Raymond's music. Mahalo.
Amazing man - Amazing culture - Amazing music

You are truly blessed with this wonderful man as your Grandpa. This video made me cry when he spoke about Hawaii changing and losing its soul.
This seems to be happening world wide, and it can only be helped by people like Ray touching our hardened hearts. RIP

To watch this, to smile and maybe shed a tear at the same time - great affection for this man, because he had a great affection for his world.
