When I was a kid one of my friends fell into the gearing under the bridge in Albion Ny, while it was up. The one at the end of Ingersol St. He was crushed to death. These suckers are dangerous watch out.
There are draw bridges so boats can go under the bridge and not hit it. Duh. Some boats are taller than the clearance. There is a draw bridge and a lift bridge. I grew up in Medina. Beautiful town. Peaceful.
@YankeePat94 the land is very flat where that bridge is, that's my best guess. most briges over the erie canal are high enough that extra room is unnecassary.
this bridge is raised about 800 times between may 1st. and november 15th give or take a few. in the winter, i perform maintenance on this bridge and other structures along the canal with other bridge operators.

that's awesome! is it hydraulics or counter-weights that do the work?
salamander27001 2 years ago
counter weights under the street at both ends. no hydraulics.

about how many times a day or week do you have to trip it? do you need to be on-duty or present in the winter?
