I used to learn this solo, but didn't practise again for a while, because nobody asked maybe to listened to it ( no enough genesis fans around!). Really pleased to listen and see it on the real thing, ARP soloist, didn't knew it was a Fuzz guitar preset, very rich buzy sound, funny but it's exactly that. The Black and white colors is for ...very 1974. Cool, Thanks so much!
I agree, it's a lovely solo. The kind that you find in 70's music. Tony Banks is really interesting to my ears when it comes to harmony and progression chord. Another solo that I love from Genesis is from the album "A Trick Of The Tail", in the song "Robbery Assault And Battery" starting around 2m30s. With its clymax at 4m20s !
Here's another great synth solo from the band Harmonium (still from the 70's).
A fantastic solo, I LOVE Tony Banks, and In The Cage is an amazing song, and I loveeeee Peter Gabriel's vocal style. Genesis forever! I love them all!
Guess what, everyone?!?!? I can say I recently sold this virtuoso a Near Mint Ensoniq SQ80, and now he's my buddy!!! Truly AWESOME, MAN! It's Kel... I had to sign-in through my son's YouTube account, to leave this comment because I don't have an account and I didn't want to lose the vibe of just having seen you play this for the first time, by taking the time to create my own account before commenting... Loved It!!! You make it look so easy... Thanks for sharing.
Breath taking. Simply marvellous sound, so pure and addictive. I listen to a lot of music through valve pre amplifiers and Ribbon speakers and remember this tune when my uncle gave me the CD to try.Truly mesmerising. 10/10
Is that really just the Fuzz Guitar preset? I have the VST version, the AM Prosolovst, and the Fuzz guitar doesn't sound quite right. This might be just be the VST, but I was wondering if you had tweaked any settings, or added any effects? Great job by the way!
@boswell255 The studio version of this song uses a dubbed line in this solo where the same line is played one octave higher, slightly chorused and blended together carefully, not too obvious but I know it's there as I could hear it. That's why it sounds this way, I haven't tried the vst software version so I can't say much about it. Thanks
@pianist007 Thanks for the reply, but trust me your version sounds much closer to the original recording to my attempt with the VST. I suppose it's to be expected with a digital immitation of a classic analog synth. That's a great tip with the octaved chorus lead, I might have to try that and see how it sounds. Thanks!
Flawless execution! Bravo! Another treat is that I noticed use almost the exact same fingering that I do on this one ... which gives me hope that a little more practise will get it that good. :)
Man, I wish my Pro-DGX weren't so sick. She needs a VCF replaced and I don't know how to get it done. Beautiful instruments. The fuzz guitar sounds like nothing else!
@hegelec Thanks for your comment. I strongly advice you to send your ARP to Eric Van Baaren (NL) he is the best one in Europe on anything ARP-ish . . Good luck
I'm sending you a link to his website on a private message.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!! brings back my memory of seeing them do A TRICK OF THE TAIL in the 70s...... he didnt have big fancy synths..... but later did get the ARP QUADRA...........
Waaaa top playing !!!! I give it a 10 . your hand look like a very handy spider . And you are right , Genesis music is part of our cultural background .
Thanks. Both are identical with the same circuitry. The only difference is the way you select presets, this one is easier. On this earlier DGX model the filter is the same one used on earlier Pro Soloist units so they sound identical.
WOW - that was flawless - you almost made that look easy - many thanks for posting that incredible rendition and made all the more authentic by using the ARP pro-soloist. - simply Brilliant ! -
and yes that is an awesome piece of music, when I 1st heard it I was completely gobsmacked and played it over and over again and I never tire of hearing it.
Thanks. Yes the switches is a non factory mod which drops the pitch of any note on the scale -depending on which switch you engage- by a value of quarter of a tone. Nice feature for playing some non-western scales such as Oriental modes.
This is great, great, great!! "In The Cage" is by far my favorite Tony Banks synth moment...I've always wanted to learn this thing, thought I had it down too...you just blew my mind man!! I got to watch this about a million times to cop it like you!
I found a Pro-DGX in a music pawn shop for $300 OBO 5 years ago. I played it, but it kinda had a clunky, floppy build quality...it didn't play too well either. Perhaps it was just worn in. Nice solo BTW!
these are 12 switches for quarter tone scale tuning usually used in Middle Eastern music. The black switch on the left decides whether the selected note goes upwards or downwards quarter of a tone.
This is the later model - the Pro-DGX, right? It contained a much more stable operating system, but it doesn't have quite the same "bite" as the original, early to mid-70's ARP Pro_Soloist. Still - an outstanding performance from you!
(My own personal gripe - your bass player added a few too many embellishments and notes that kind of threw me off. Better to stick with Mike's original lines. Just my $0.02. Fantastic, just the same...
Actually this is the earlier version of the Pro-DGX and it looks very much like the Pro Soloist, the later model had the orange and black color scheme like the Quadra and the Odyssey MK 3 and also a different filter. This one uses the same moog type filter used on the earlier MK 2 Odyssey and it sounds exactly like the earlier pro soloist, I have both but this one is easier to use. Also since it is all analogue so there is no operating system, just a simple digital scheme for preset management.
Please disregard my stupid comments about the bass playing.
As far as an "operating system" - I should have simply referred to it's circuits, or, perhaps, it's internal system, et al. It is a completely analog synth, after all. Most importantly, once again, you've just floored me with another outstanding performance! Absolutely brilliant!!!!!
great sounds
