@ibanezae20 Well uhh... watch his fingers and do the same with yours. He plays it the same way no matter what video you watch. This particular video helps you out with the acoustic version, and you just play it a little faster for the electric version. Pretty simple but you have to get the beat right. I use a super jumbo, and it sounds almost completely correct when you drop her down a half-step. Thats with EJ-26s on there.

"Baby don't it feel like heaven right now" is a great way to open a song! Not only that but alot of the greatest songs ever written have taken weeks or even years to write.
Tom pettys music is a mix of rock and roll and several other genres with sensibilities of a true singer/songwriter. For over 30 years their music has defied any simple categorization, but is outlaw in spirit and has influenced many of todays leading artists in the contemporary alternative country movment.
I remember around 1979(give or take) I bought an 8 track of Your Gonna Get It after I head Joe Anthony "The Godfather of Rock and Roll" in San Antonio play "I need to Know" on 99.5 KISS FM. My 1st wife said "I never heard of Tom Petty". I use to request Joe and Lou to play it all the time back then. Met the drummer a few years ago at sycamore cove, he was a guest speaker for C.A. Peace Out Tom.
The Super Beatles are pretty much stage props. They aren't really even used except maybe on the recordings. Mike Campbell uses uses Fenders Princetons and Tweeds and a VOX AC30 that are behind the Super Beatle facade.
He's so nonchalant about it all but this stuff is really history. Benmont is right; "The Waiting" is a great way to open an album "Baby don't it feel like Heaven right now" One of the best!
its hard to say how much this guy has made my life better, i know that sound strange but just reflect for a moment how much music has enriched your life
I love this. You always hear songwriters going on about they wrote such and such a hit song in 10 minutes. This is closer to the truth: grinding it out over and over until you get it right. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it. One of the best songs ever.
I love the part when he say's "Don't play that any more". funny. I saw him in concert in Indy last July. I always liked them but after that I realized how much. It makes us wish we could go back in time and have known them.
Yeah I know what you mean, I saw them in '06 and before that, I was aware of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but I never really realized just how much great music out there is theirs. But it would have been really cool to know Tom and the guys when they were just starting out
Dude, its fucking eddie vedder!!!!!! the singer of pearl jam!!! dont you know who pearl jam is?? if not, then you must go buy their albums! by "Ten". its they're first record. and its amazing!!!
The first time I heard him tell the story of his family knocking on the walls telling him not to play the song anymore, I mean, I guess he was pretty rich and successful and married and had kids at this point, but, for whatever reason, probably because of the Apartment Song, I just picture Tom Petty alone in his little two room apartment, neighbors knockin' on the walls as he tries to get this song down.
geez they should be lucky! if tom was my neighbor he can work on songs night and day for all i care. the only thing i might bang on the wall for is to join in!
When this song came out my sister asked me "why did Tom Petty never learn to swim? Because the wading is the hardest part." I didn't get it for years.
do you know if there's a full version of the first live clip?...not the one with eddie vedder but the one before that at 1:00 - 1:38, if there's a full clip of that?
Pearl Jam is awesome. As is Tom petty. By the way, if you haven't listened to it get the "INTO THE WILD" soundtrack Eddie Vedder kills it on that record. Great singing.
I've always loved the message of healthy impatience in this song...it flew into the face of the annoying 70's pop psychology idea that the JOURNEY was the most important thing...aaaaagh!!!
Right...Tom Petty is pretty bad ass...so bad ass he'd probably kick your ass for dissing one of his favorite bands...and the band of his good friend Harrison. Not to mention Petty is influenced a lot by the 60's more so the Byrds but The Beatles are definitely in there too.
he would cuz even though tom met elvis presley and he started loving music when tom saw the beatles on the ed sullivan show he decided to become a musician. so yah good comment him and george and harrison are great friends. tom go!!! my fav song
Thanks Tom and the Heartbreakers you are the American Kinks, keep it going!!!! I'm learning The Waiting, so will be driving my family beserk with all my practicing (just like you!!) We all love your work Thanks a bunch!!
I have to disagree with sbusnello. The artists you mentioned, referring to their classic works, are great singers in the sense that their passion and commitment to the song and the performance is never in doubt. Singing is more than just having a 3 octave range, perfect pitch or basso profondo. It is art.
YES! my birthday is October 15 - how did he know? yeah baby, the waiting is the hardest part! i've seen him at least 20 times over the years. i think my favorite was at irvine CA when they did a cover of pretty ballerina. knocked me over and out!
The beauty and secret of great music lies within the lyrics. Dylan, Petty, Young, Jagger, Nelson, and a bunch of others really cant sing that well but damn the strong lyrics, the tight band and the craftmanship are what make these artists great!
I have seen Tom Petty four times. I just saw him in Indian Wells in Palm Springs. He and the Heartbreakers are the absolute BEST!!!! I love this man. I listen to him daily. He Rocks!!!!
true that. just growing up from mid 70's to the 90's, really, all his stuff is in your life, even if you don't like him! I'm just coming around again to re-discovering his music after hearing refugee for who knows how many times on the radio. but like eddie vedder says, you remember the feeling in your gut when you hear each of these songs, especially like The Waiting, this one has taken on a whole new meaning for me now as I'm in my early 30's. I can't stop listening to it, it's beautiful!
I play alot of Petty in my band. PPL say I sound just like him...I take that as a compliment. My fav to play is Listen to her heart,Runnin' Dowm a Dream, and American Girl.
