agreed, no universal health care would be a disaster. Have government provide some basic level; allow insurance companies or non profits to provide supplemental coverage for those who can afford it & wish it, similar to school availability

If we went to a single payer system then HOW would those healthcare CEOS get their Multi million dollar bonuses? How would Shareholders in hospital corporations and big Pharma get their dividends and Capital Gains??? OH MY!!! How could they still bankrupt the families of Cancer victims and clean out the life saving of end stage kidney failure patients? It would be sooo much harder for a few to get filthy rich of the suffering and deaths of many.
I cant believe Im hearing people cite government resources on outlook spending for health care. They're ALWAYS so accurate at predicting spending, like Medicare or the Iraq War. Just because the president has a -D at the end of his name does not mean that all of this is all of a sudden going to change. Govt always has & always will be cost-INefficient. Care will have to be rationed in order to provide coverage for all. It will be too expensive. We are runnin a $1T deficit as it is.
Another USA for-profit healthcare horror story: People lose jobs because they work for a small company and when the employee has a medical problem it raises the rates for the business and the employee gets fired when his boss can't absorb the added insurance premium cost. Another reason USA needs HR-676.
Single payer healthcare can easily be supported with excess funds from the "spOILs of war" that Bush's neocons said would pay for the invasion and occupation of Iraq.
There is absolutely no evidence showing that a government-run health care system will make things cheaper & more efficient. When has government-run anything been cheaper & more efficient? As for better care, fat chance. A national formulary will be established. It will be like the HMOs on steroids. No one falls through the cracks because they die while waiting for the procedures that they need. No one life will be destroyed by medical bankruptcy, but a whole country will be bankrupted.
Email is killing the postal service so they have to raise rates to stay afloat.
Outsourcing mail is great for the few at the top who make millions on the backs of more low wage workers.
Cheney outsourced laundry in Iraq. They imported some East Indians to do a sh_tty job of washing clothes for pennies and then Haliburton charged the Army $100+/bag for the service. Army got screwed. Foreign workers got screwed. Cheney and his shareholders got rich.
Chicago 2005: Affluent Rondout School District 72 in Lake Forest spent $22,508 per student, compared with $8,675 in Zion Elementary School District 6, where property values are dramatically lower.
The United States will not be able to sustain a national health care system. The federal debt will crush the country, they simply can't afford, they can't afford anything anymore.
We are running trillion dollar yearly deficits & are over $10T in debt. So where is this money coming from to pay for government-run healthcare? We cannot afford it, or any more government programs for that matter, especially with the bleak outlook for Social Security & Medicare. This country is going bankrupt.
That's the same system that puts cancer victims on a surgery wait list.
Instead of operating immediately, they're forced to wait and most of them become inoperable.
I'm all for people getting health care, I'm just not for breaking what's left of the financial back of the country to do it, because if(when) that happens, NO ONE will have insurance.
Most Canadian provinces DON'T have waits but there's a wide variance between provinces. When there is a wait it is decided by the patients physician for elective procedures not by insurance eligibility.
Elinor Christansen - Waiting Lists and Universal Healthcare [YouTube] 5:11
Canadian YouTuber "phaedress" had breast cancer and raves about their healthcare system. She said that if she lived south of the border she'd be dead. Message her if you don't believe me.
The score of the video and the comments by fellow Canadians seem to conflict on the video you cited.
Her case is few and far between and what makes it even more suspect is how happy she is, that SHE got taken care of. Does she have any clue how many people were waiting behind her, or was she simply happy she got care?
I'll take my numbers over your hearsay any day. Most of the good I hear about Canadian-style healthcare comes from Canadians. Most of the bad I hear about Canadian-style healthcare comes from Americans you included. My uncle's Quebecois girlfriend says she's never waited for care and absolutely loves their system. Canada's single-payer system has better outcomes at lower cost than our for-profit system. What part of "BETTER DEAL" don't you understand? USA needs HR-676!
Okay listen, I don't know what fantasy you're in, but the end result of universal health care in this country would push public spending past what we already spend on the DOD.
We're bankrupt. Universal health care will just make the economy worse and in the end NO ONE will have health care.
It's not even the matter of quality going down or the wait lists, it's the simple fact that we just can't afford it.
and Americans can't afford the current price of health care.. something needs to be done... I think owhat we have is worse for the economy... Health care cost is one of the leading facts that caused this
I'm listening ... but I'm not following your logic.
You say we can't afford $3,678 per capita (10% of GDP) to cover ALL Americans but we can afford $6,714 per capita (15.6% of GDP) to cover 5 of 6 Americans?
Yes, we're bankrupt, so how can we afford to keep spending $6,714 on for-profit healthcare?
How can we NOT afford to cut healthcare costs down to $3,678 with HR-676?
Funny, we could afford 2 discretionary wars and bailouts and massive rescue packages as well as cash infusions for banks and insurance companys that were grossly overleverdged and were stupidly playing "pass the bad penny". It's about time that people were given what they want...and deserve, not the power-brokers and oligarchy.
Actually, we cannot afford NOT to pass healthcare reform. It is because of healthcare costs to business that US companies are not as competative as other economies.
The US could not afford any wars or bailouts either. the Federal Deficit is at $11 Trillion right now and the economy is getting worse for each day.
I could see the benefits of a sociallized system as compared to what you have now, but it will not work. You can't afford it. you can't afford anything.
This is what happens when idiots make assumptions. Show me where I said that I was ever for the bailouts, wars, or anything of the sort.
I would like to know, or are you just someone who argues with himself. By that I mean that you make a model of what I believe, and argue with it. Considering the fact that I don't support those things... I guess you are arguing with your own thoughts.
Now, show me how we will pay for this debt. Yes, I hate Bush too, he made a debt, but Obama is quadrupling.
You made a simple declarative statement, "We simply cannot afford it." That is not an argument -- I explained why I felt Americans were justified in pursuing health care. Glad there is some agreement.
However, I will not converse with someone who calls me an idiot -- I am not one, and with few exceptions, would I ever lablel another person as such. Your homepage says you are 14 -- you have a lot to learn, so I will forgive your name calling -- but I am not interested in conversing with you.
How can we afford it??? We are running TRILLION dollar deficits every year. We could not afford Bush's spending & we certainly cannot afford Obama's spending. Put everything right?? You've taken everything Bush did & put it on steroids! Education reform, health care reform, surging with our military overseas, suspending civil liberties at home, increasing size & power of government, more bailouts, more stimulus...Sounds like "change we can believe in" LOL
Alright then, sure, if you really don't want to debate the fact that Obama is going to create massive horrible debt.
Yes, we deserve it. But doesn't the lower class McDonalds worker deserve a chance at a big screen TV if they had worked hard all their life. But the sad fact is.....he can't afford it.
20,000 Americans die annually from lack of healthcare not because they don't have big screen TVs. With HR-676 we pay 33% less: 10% of GDP instead of 15% we now pay. We cover 100% instead of 83%: 300 million instead of the 250 million who now have coverage. What's NOT to like about it?
I want health care, but I am speculative on the costs and risks of nationalising health care. I try to be as much an independent as possible on this topic. I want it, but don't at the same time.
Actually, a single-payer plan like HR 767 REDUCES health care costs. Do the math ... Americans spend approximately $2.2 Trillion on health. Of this money, 33% goes to CORPORATE PROFIT (i.e. the executives of big insurance and pharmaceutical companies). Now imagine if the $73 BILLION dollars that now goes to corporate profits actually went to help SICK PEOPLE.
I'm talking about how the government will be able to pay for it. Our government is in debt. Yes, the collective of America spends a LOT on healthcare. But for the government to pay for it, well where would they get the money except for raising taxes again. Look at it like this, there already isn't enough money in the top 1% of America to pay for Obama's budget. Taxes on rich isn't going to work.
Maybe in imaginary land will government-run health care(or anything for that matter) be cheaper & more efficient. The argument is that our health care system is already so inefficient. If that is the case, then why are so many advocating that we increase spending? $73B LOL that is a drop in the bucket & will not be able to cover a meaningful portion of health care spending by the govt. GAO estimates govt health care spending will exceed $3T after all is said & done if Obamacare goes through.
printo69-"Maybe in imaginary land will government-run health care(or anything for that matter) be cheaper & more efficient. "
Because as we all know the rest of the industrialized world does not exist.
Hear that Germany and France and Australia and Taiwan and most of Europe and Asia? Stop pretending you aren't imaginary!
BTW, weren't the figures for the Iraq off because Shrub kept fudging the numbers? So isn't implying Obama does that with health care costs with no proof a bit disingenuous?
I dont know if you are aware of this but we are not Germany, or France, or Canada. We are the USA. We wont implement a system like those countries have...ever.
Why do we have to increase spending if our health care system is so inefficient? It makes no sense. Thats what will happen, spending will be increased in order to afford health care.
So Obama cant fudge numbers also? Is he infallible or something? He is no different from any other politician. The costs he says will be higher
i hate to say that it seems as if the medical industry is motivated more by the revenues generated than any kind of cures that could be achieved. This is somewhat scarey. What if there was a cure for cancer? but they don't want to find it an use it? I could see that happening. If you don't have status, you do not deserve to live? Is that how it works?
Ben Nelson is Sarah Palin's DICKLESS and BALLESS BITCH and PUSSY! Palin is a SUPERIOR politician and statesman than Nelson could ever be. She is also MORE MAN than he is for Ben wears the skirt in his family while his wife wears the pants!
Just so long as they can continue their silly little gravy train and not have to actually shell out a little bit of paycheck for quality healthcare. I'm sorry if it sounds selfish, but I DO NOT wanna be forced to pay for other people's healthcare! If people wanna help them, fine. I'll help people I know and care about as well voluntarily. "Public option" is bulshit and unconstitutional. Gov't has no business in providing healthcare. None.
Sure, profits play a big part in insurance companies, but it's not like they don't care about helping sick people. I mean, if they REALLY wanted to maximize profits, do you really think they'd be working in healthcare, one of the most regulated industries in the country?? They'd go into fields where they can make much greater profits.
NHC would totally screw up our country's healthcare! We cannot afford to take that risk. The gov't can't take care of 300 million people effectively.
Plus, once we open the NHC genie, we won't be able to close it. Americans will get too comfortable with free healthcare and take advantage of the system, and they'll get so cozied up to the idea of not having to pay that they'll become complacent with all the inefficiencies and mistakes. Don't believe me? That's what's happened in places like Canada, UK and France, with some of the most socialized healthcare systems on the planet! These people ignore the screwups and don't seem to care.
Americans are already too comfortable with free K-12 edumacation. Walmart and McDonalds will hire you at 16 without a diploma! Highschool should be for those who can afford it ... like the hospital.
Ben Nelson, I'm sad to say because I love Democrats is a DINO (Democrat In Name Only) but we can't compete against him in the Democratic Primary because he may switch to the Republican Party even so Nebraska is a conservative state. So if we go against Ben Nelson that will leave dumb ass Mitch McConnell one seat closer to becoming Senate Majority Leader.
Lol! "Do everything in their power" to deny care? What a bunch of bullcrap. Look at the recent AMA study on insurance denial rates that was cited by The Hill, among other publications probably. What did they find? Lookee here: Medicare was number 1! 6% denial rate, compared to the highest insurers with just 4%. The best insurers only denied 2% of claims. I hardly think that's "doing everything in their power" to deny care. Don't buy into Michael Moore's "Sicko" BS.
And stop making shit up about insurance companies all being "greedy" fatcats. I'm so sick of this stereotype about executives. Sure, execs. make a lot of money, and they give each other huge salaries, but it's absolutely absurd to claim all they care about is profits and money! They ARE humans, too. They feel just like other humans and have emotions. They're businessmen, though. Sometimes what's 'moral' isn't necessarily the most prudent thing to do, I'm afraid.
Exactly! Ron Paul is a big fan of this. He hates UHC AND is not a big supporter of insurers getting in the way. And he should know! After all, Ron Paul's been an OB/GYN for decades, having delivered over 4,000 babies.
If you're a MILLIONAIRE that's a great system. We need SINGLE PAYER healthcare on the table for the 20,000 who DIE each year because they're uninsured. Healthcare between almost 50 million Americans and their doctor is NONEXISTENT.
Right... because government will improve care, improve outcomes, provide more services at a cheaper cost & more efficiently.... what drugs does your doctor have you on that makes you believe that will ever happen in a million years?
The problem with our system is that its not cost effective(16% GDP), further government intervention will not make it cheaper & will not make it more cost effective. It never has & never will.
Your not seeing my point. Regardless of how many lives it would save, you can't spend money you don't have! Money in the United States that's being traded goes up to 14 trillion as the total sum of money that's owed is 53 trillion.
That's not sustainable with or without a national health care plan, it's just not possible to implement it.
Spending less with HR-676 will not solve the problem since you need to cut a whole lot more than just that part of the deficit.
The Federal Government is drowing in debt and will not be able to do anything since it will undoubtedly cease to exist since it can pay for itself in just a few decades. By then it won't matter what the health care plan of said non-existant government is.
In that perspective health care is a secondary consern.
I think you're saying "don't worry about remodeling the kitchen when the house is on fire!" I understand your concern and agree with you on the financial disaster issue but still think HR-676 should go forward.
You're probably a big fan of IOUSA [YouTube] 32:35 as am I.
For me it's an END THE FED issue which brings up HR-1207.
What's YOUR proposed solution to the collapse of the US empire?
Did I say that? The government isn't doing to well with the school system. Sadly private schools produce a much better student. We're off topic though. The conversation was about the medical industry.
You have any idea how much private schools cost? Home schooling? Fine, unless, like my ex and her mother, you're a dumbass! You threw gov social programs under the bus.
Private schooling in many cases, especially in major cities, is cheaper. The per student costs, for example in DC, are over $13,000 for public schools & only $7500 for private schools. So why not allow people to have their tax dollars back to send their child to a school that they want? Why not let parents decide whats best for their children, not the government? Why not give these innercity kids a chance by giving them a good education?
I was under the impression that the poor didn't pay taxes. Rich folks, who pay taxes, already send their kids to fancy private schools. Where did you get your numbers?
We have a strange system. People have to work for nothing so we can compete globally but those people have to have enough disposable income to shop at Walmart because 70% of GDP is consumer spending. Unsustainable system but we will prop it up a bit longer.
its all fueled by the FED. By forcing interest rates so low, it is not profitable to invest in bonds & savings. Its so cheap to borrow. You get little in return for savings though with the rates so low. We need savings in order to fuel production. We need to produce something in this country or we will have nothing left to offer after our money has run out.
I sent my son to a "fancy" Catholic school. It wasn't very fancy, but he got a good education and we didn't have to send him to the scholl with the future inmates in the public system.
Public schools are expensive too. The money comes from our taxes so it isn't free. How about a voucher system to allow parents more choice in affording a school that is best for their kids?
There is a reason that world leaders come to the United States for our health care. Why not go to Cuba? Clearly they have a better, or at least, equivalent health care system (thats what Michael Moore & the WHO say). Look at all govt-run programs: schools, medicare, social security, post office, medicaid. These programs cost too much, provide too little & are extremely inefficient. We dont really have "free market" healthcare, nearly half of hc costs are govt-paid & has gotten expensive
I'm not on medicare, social security or medicaid yet but teachers deserve to be paid a living wage and so do postal workers. You can mail a letter for 42 cents and it's there in a day or two. Postage in Canada is 54 cents. Schools are supported by property taxes so in a rich neighborhood you get fully-funded schools and in a poor neighborhood you get under-funded schools. That's a tax structure inequity problem not a gov incompetency problem.
Then how come it costs more money for a student to go to school in the inner city than it does private or in the suburbs? More money is spent there & less results are seen. The inner cities have money, they do get money from the property taxes from all those big businesses & those tall buildings.
as for the post office, why not allow private sector to compete. I bet the people at UPS & FedEx can do a far better job than the govt.
The Republican response --"government doesn't do anything well--and we'll make damned sure it doesn't, too. Let's sell off public agencies, heck even the roads."
Problem is, it always cost us more than if the govt. did most things itself. Privitization is a sure recipe to make the rich even richer and soak the poor and the taxpaying middle class.
Reagenism, Thatcherism, George W. Bush, neo cons, supply side/ trickle down (it means that they're pissing on you) economics caused this horror.
What world do you live in? What history books did you read? If complete government control were the way, the better, more efficient way, then the Soviet Union would have won the Cold War, not the USA. Capitalism makes wealth.
This economic crisis wasnt caused by any of those things. It was all fueled by the Federal Reserve.
No, deregulation allowed a majority of today's financial problems to fester and then explode. People voted to limit privitization and for more protection from some of the multi-national corporations' most flagrant abuses.
Remember, privitization of Social Security investments that was championed by the GOP -- dead as a rat, thankfully.
The country has wised up and moved on. The last 8 years are a regret in the rearview mirror--but we still must put right the damage done by GOP thugs.
Chicago 2005: Affluent Rondout School District 72 in Lake Forest spent $22,508 per student, compared with $8,675 in Zion Elementary School District 6, where property values are dramatically lower.
UPS and FedEx compete with USPS by paying low wages and benefits. Try mailing a letter for 42 cents via UPS or FedEx. I worked at FedEx for a while and sorters throw packages and laugh when they crash. When shipping FedEx pack it like it's going in a cage with a gorilla because it is.

Competing with the United States Postal Service in the delivery of first-class mail is illegal.
So private companies cannot compete with the US Post office because it is against the law.
Postage costs continue to rise, deliveries arent faster, mail isnt safer & post office lines are not getting shorter.
printo69 2 years ago
Email is killing the postal service so they have to raise rates to stay afloat.
Outsourcing mail is great for the few at the top who make millions on the backs of more low wage workers.
Cheney outsourced laundry in Iraq. They imported some East Indians to do a sh_tty job of washing clothes for pennies and then Haliburton charged the Army $100+/bag for the service. Army got screwed. Foreign workers got screwed. Cheney and his shareholders got rich.
That's what I think of outsourcing.

That's the same system that puts cancer victims on a surgery wait list.
Instead of operating immediately, they're forced to wait and most of them become inoperable.
I'm all for people getting health care, I'm just not for breaking what's left of the financial back of the country to do it, because if(when) that happens, NO ONE will have insurance.
cheeseaura 2 years ago
Most Canadian provinces DON'T have waits but there's a wide variance between provinces. When there is a wait it is decided by the patients physician for elective procedures not by insurance eligibility.
Elinor Christansen - Waiting Lists and Universal Healthcare [YouTube] 5:11

The score of the video and the comments by fellow Canadians seem to conflict on the video you cited.

Okay listen, I don't know what fantasy you're in, but the end result of universal health care in this country would push public spending past what we already spend on the DOD.
We're bankrupt. Universal health care will just make the economy worse and in the end NO ONE will have health care.
It's not even the matter of quality going down or the wait lists, it's the simple fact that we just can't afford it.
cheeseaura 2 years ago
and Americans can't afford the current price of health care.. something needs to be done... I think owhat we have is worse for the economy... Health care cost is one of the leading facts that caused this

How can we NOT afford to cut healthcare costs down to $3,678 with HR-676?
undiesinabunch 2 years ago
We simply can't afford it right now. It will not work out.
ssbb8674 2 years ago
Funny, we could afford 2 discretionary wars and bailouts and massive rescue packages as well as cash infusions for banks and insurance companys that were grossly overleverdged and were stupidly playing "pass the bad penny". It's about time that people were given what they want...and deserve, not the power-brokers and oligarchy.
Actually, we cannot afford NOT to pass healthcare reform. It is because of healthcare costs to business that US companies are not as competative as other economies.
somersetdc 2 years ago 3
The US could not afford any wars or bailouts either. the Federal Deficit is at $11 Trillion right now and the economy is getting worse for each day.
I could see the benefits of a sociallized system as compared to what you have now, but it will not work. You can't afford it. you can't afford anything.

ssbb8674 2 years ago

Education reform, health care reform, surging with our military overseas, suspending civil liberties at home, increasing size & power of government, more bailouts, more stimulus...Sounds like "change we can believe in" LOL

ssbb8674 2 years ago
20,000 Americans die annually from lack of healthcare not because they don't have big screen TVs. With HR-676 we pay 33% less: 10% of GDP instead of 15% we now pay. We cover 100% instead of 83%: 300 million instead of the 250 million who now have coverage. What's NOT to like about it?

Actually, a single-payer plan like HR 767 REDUCES health care costs. Do the math ... Americans spend approximately $2.2 Trillion on health. Of this money, 33% goes to CORPORATE PROFIT (i.e. the executives of big insurance and pharmaceutical companies). Now imagine if the $73 BILLION dollars that now goes to corporate profits actually went to help SICK PEOPLE.
ByzantiumCA 2 years ago
I'm talking about how the government will be able to pay for it. Our government is in debt. Yes, the collective of America spends a LOT on healthcare. But for the government to pay for it, well where would they get the money except for raising taxes again. Look at it like this, there already isn't enough money in the top 1% of America to pay for Obama's budget. Taxes on rich isn't going to work.
ssbb8674 2 years ago
Maybe in imaginary land will government-run health care(or anything for that matter) be cheaper & more efficient. The argument is that our health care system is already so inefficient. If that is the case, then why are so many advocating that we increase spending? $73B LOL that is a drop in the bucket & will not be able to cover a meaningful portion of health care spending by the govt. GAO estimates govt health care spending will exceed $3T after all is said & done if Obamacare goes through.

The costs he says will be higher

whoo689 2 years ago
Sure, profits play a big part in insurance companies, but it's not like they don't care about helping sick people. I mean, if they REALLY wanted to maximize profits, do you really think they'd be working in healthcare, one of the most regulated industries in the country?? They'd go into fields where they can make much greater profits.
NHC would totally screw up our country's healthcare! We cannot afford to take that risk. The gov't can't take care of 300 million people effectively.

And stop making shit up about insurance companies all being "greedy" fatcats. I'm so sick of this stereotype about executives. That's not sustainable with or without a national health care plan, it's just not possible to implement it.

Which part of BETTER CARE don't you understand?
Which part of NO ONE FALLS THROUGH THE CRACKS don't you understand?
Which part of NO ONES LIFE IS DESTROYED FROM MEDICAL BANKRUPTCY don't you understand?

Spending less with HR-676 will not solve the problem since you need to cut a whole lot more than just that part of the deficit.
The Federal Government is drowing in debt and will not be able to do anything since it will undoubtedly cease to exist since it can pay for itself in just a few decades. By then it won't matter what the health care plan of said non-existant government is.

Why not give these innercity kids a chance by giving them a good education?

There is a reason that world leaders come to the United States for our health care. Why not go to Cuba? Clearly they have a better, or at least, equivalent health care system (thats what Michael Moore & the WHO say). Look at all govt-run programs: schools, medicare, social security, post office, medicaid. These programs cost too much, provide too little & are extremely inefficient. We dont really have "free market" healthcare, nearly half of hc costs are govt-paid & has gotten expensive
printo69 2 years ago
I'm not on medicare, social security or medicaid yet but teachers deserve to be paid a living wage and so do postal workers. You can mail a letter for 42 cents and it's there in a day or two. Postage in Canada is 54 cents. Schools are supported by property taxes so in a rich neighborhood you get fully-funded schools and in a poor neighborhood you get under-funded schools. That's a tax structure inequity problem not a gov incompetency problem.
undiesinabunch 2 years ago
Then how come it costs more money for a student to go to school in the inner city than it does private or in the suburbs? More money is spent there & less results are seen. The inner cities have money, they do get money from the property taxes from all those big businesses & those tall buildings.
as for the post office, why not allow private sector to compete. I bet the people at UPS & FedEx can do a far better job than the govt.

The Republican response --"government doesn't do anything well--and we'll make damned sure it doesn't, too. Let's sell off public agencies, heck even the roads."

Reagenism, Thatcherism, George W. Bush, neo cons, supply side/ trickle down (it means that they're pissing on you) economics caused this horror.
