Remember THREE non-racist "little monkey" comments made by Cosell?
#1. "You know that little monkey. The theorem was that he was too small for pro football." - 08/29/1972 Chiefs @ Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle - white guy)
#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (re: an unknown player, white or black? game, punt or kickoff return?) Billy "White Shoes" Johnson?
#3. "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he." - 09/05/1983 Dallas @ Washington (re: Alvin Garrett - black guy)
This is who Barry Sanders played most like, I grow up watching & imitating Billy's running style. They didn't know what to do with me in High School with all the shimmy & shaking I stole from Billy.
A) The NFL needs the excitement of a Billy "White Shoes" Johnson again. If you don't like the celebratioin, stop the player before giving him a chance to celebrate. And B) Special teamers like Johnson and Steve Tasker belong in the freaking hall of fame!
And C) Honorable mention to Broncons RB Gerald Whilite and his post TD back flips.
@delo1229 I played with him at Widener College - I did the "funky chicken" first - Tell him Tony Freeman from Chester, Pa. I also wore the "White Shoes" first. He's my man.
lol, i bet he does, its just part of the game, i would do the funky chicken everytime i scored if i played in the nfl, fuck a 15 yard penalty, i would celebrate after every touchdown
@sean4440 WORD, my friend......WORD. I'd take the 15 every time if we were up and smile at the refs the entire time while doing it. Just to make sure they know that the 15 yard rule isn't going to stop me, I would do at least a 1 minute dance. All of the "suits" are always trying to take the passion and fun out of things. Screw the suits, live life to the fullest, and smile all the way to the bank!!
i'm not a niner fan but you are 100 percent correct on this one. He was totally down at the one yard line. If they would have had instant replay back then there would have been some upset Falcon fans....
Mr. Billy "white shoes" Johnson. The best kick returner of all times.

The funky chicken dance after every TD priceless..... even when done on my beloved Steelers.
No ego trip, just f u n.

Sayres is a sore bitch.
"Billy was more of an entertainer"
Implying that he wasn't such a good returner.
Even 40 years after his injuries he's still a sore little bitch.

I remember something Joe Namath once said on The Tonight Show: "When I played, we celebrated AFTER the game. IF we won."
That's the way it oughta be. Until you've won the game, there is nothing to celebrate.

Billy white shoes Johnson these players today should give you money every time they do an end zone dance. I love this old school stuff.

Love Billy 'White Shoes' Johnson doing the funky chicken, it's so American.
criticalmv 1 year ago
@criticalmv - Agreed. And unlike so many of today's end-zone routines, it genuinely seemed to be about celebration rather than self-promotion.
