In an alternative universe, Weller didn't break The Jam up, didn't start drinking too much, the band became bigger than U2 and changed society for the better due to influencing so many people with an unwaveringly vocal and incisive social awareness.

as he wrote the song he can do what the fuck he wants with it! and as for the jam sound, paul did most of his writing alone, check out the demo's on extras (he can play base as well you know) would love to see the jam reform and i agree the jam songs sound less edgy without bruce and rick but glad to see pauls voice hasn't lost it's edge on this version
Dont think The Jam ever did a crap song but Mr Weller should really consider a phone call to Bruce & Rick and do The Jam stuff properly. .i never did get the chance to see The Jam live but just look at the reaction from the crowd. .theres loads of miles left in The Jam if they reformed. . .if anyone fancies a cracking night out you should check out Stiff Little fingers or The Alarm as they are probably the best bands still playin out there

The clip here is not a great version and I would suggest fans look to the album "live jam" or elsewhere on youtube for a decent version of this classic song.

Call me a bit of a nerd but...when PW very admirably put his Rickenbaker semi through a Marshall stack, it produced that classic slicing jangling Jam sound that is absent here...
I love Paul Wellers solo stuff but it's a different matter when he's reworking his old stuff into a new style it worked with town called malice but the rest... not so much. I heard him play Eaton Rifles at one of his recent gigs, I was dissapointed it didn't have the punk magic the song deserves, just like the Jam gave it.
