Phil Hartman nailed the Chairman of the Board. "Kick his ass Steve." Nobody is perfect. It is how the music these folks made and how it made me feel that really matters in the end. I don't care if Elvis was lousy in bed or if Sinatra used "Connections" to get the part in "From Here to Eternity." or if George Harrison was bitter for being overshadowed by Lennon/Macca or if he picked his nose and ate his boogers. Happy New Year!
@Das- I have insulted you in prime fashion. I have administered to your ass a wicked beating. I have pulled out my guns and blasted holes all over your pathetic carcass. You have tangled with a master and I have shred your arguments to ribbons. Yet...you come at me with politeness and humor. You respond with levity and playful disregard for the Grim Reaper who stands before you. I hate you, sir! I EXPECT YOU TO RETURN THE INSULT. Now, let's try this again... you ignorant tub of lard!
Saw Ringo two weeks ago and he still does this song live along with other Beatles numbers such as: "Boys", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Honey Don't", "Yellow Submarine", and "With a Little Help From My Friends"
@WalkerKeyes When people say they love The Beatles but not Ringo, they're complete idiots and I don't consider that a real Beatles fan. They were called The Fab FOUR for a reason. To quote Steve Smith of Journey, "One of Ringo's great qualities was that he composed unique, stylistic drum parts for The Beatles songs. His parts are so signature to the songs that you can listen to a Ringo drum part without the rest of the music and still identify the song."
@Xmenfan246 - Ringo and George were largely expendable. George, in particular I found the weak-link in an otherwise PERFECT musical ensemble. Ringo was valuable in the sense that EVERYONE in the band liked him. His drumming style was something like KER-PLUNK! KER-PLUNK! KER-PLUNK!
@TwoUselessLegs Lennon's death came as he was returning to a more public life. There hadn't been any new material by him in almost five years. To be snatched away in such a senseless way is a huge contribution to the observances of his death. George was a more reserved private person that did what he wanted to do when he wanted to, and he died in a bed surrounded by the people that he loved and not at the hand of a fruitcake. His death is tragic and he doesn't have a Yoko touting his legacy
@TwoUselessLegs It is easier to listen to "Blow Away" than "Woman is the Nigger of the World." Lennon's solo catalog has some high marks but it also has some drivel. Harrison's solo career is more consistent than any of the other former Beatles. His guitar work is far from pedestrian. Awkward self doubt? , he didn't feel like he had to leap through hoops to please a fanbase. Listen to the song "Devil's Radio." It says a lot about how he felt toward gossip and stardom.
@TwoUselessLegs Well George did get a little vindication as Sinatra would introduce "Something" as the best ballad that Lennon/McCartney ever wrote. Harrison did say that the two best things that ever happened to him were getting into the Beatles and then getting out of the Beatles. I'm glad he was able to record the music he wanted to, I like the bulk of his work.
@TwoUselessLegs You pretty much have a useless brain too. To say George Harrison was expendable is nuts. Taxman, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, Here Comes the Sun, If I needed Someone are just a few that come to mind. As for Ringo, he was a hellava' performer, probably the most likeable rock star to ever set foot on stage. BTW, George wasn't murdered and didn't have Yoko yokealing.
I had no idea Buck Owens did it first until I saw him singing it on Hee Haw back in the 60's and thought, wow he's doing a Beatles song. My cousin had the record of this & I weasled it off him. I'd play it to death pover at my Aunt & Uncles and my Uncle would insist Buick Ownes had the better version lol. This is a neat clip of this and they all look cute here. :)
He always sang at least one track on each record, some of them really great ones as time went by. Abbey Road wouldn't be the same without "Octopus's Garden", nor the White Album without "Don't Pass Me By" and "Good Night."
Ringo sang good I have no idea why John and Paul or even George didn't give him more songs that he could sing, at a lower key.

@TwoUselessLegs Neither were expendable. You gotta be a moron to think that.

@hopeurforfreedom - Ringo was "essential"? Really? When Ringo had an
operation he was replaced for 3 weeks. Many people didn't even KNOW
he was gone. If you consider what happened on the anniversary of John
Lennon's death, the media was saturated with movies, documentaries,
specials, photo essays, newspaper stories all dedicated to John Lennon.
When George's anniversary comes up, there's barely a whisper. It's as if
he never existed.

@DasGolden- The manner in which John was murdered plays a
part in our infatuation. Still, it would be a STRETCH to try to imagine
George commanding the same attention had he been murdered the
same way. While John charmed us with his playful wit, his anger and
his genius for words and melody, George gave us years of awkward
self-doubt and somewhat pedestrian guitar playingl. While John was
busy being shot in the back, George slowly SMOKED himself to death.
He was hardly worthy of respect.

@Das - I'm of the opinion that most of George's adult life was a
monument to his bitterness and petty grief. Anger at what he
perceived was a conspiracy against his music by George Martin
and the others (see Y/T video "George Harrison Talks About
Paul McCartney") and grief that the world never recognized him
as an equal. His religious posturing was a smoke screen for all
this self-centered unhappiness. Never mind that "Crackerbox
Palace", "When We Was Fab" were all terribly "awkward"!

@Das - Yeah, I've heard Sinatra said that. Still, you have to
consider the source. Sinatra said almost the exact same thing
about Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" several years earlier. In
his later years, Sinatra was notorious for making "lists". Most
were names of enemies. He'd go on talk shows and talk about
"the best" actor or "the best" horse jockey. His fight with singer
Sinead O'Conner him parodied on Saturday Night Live. Praise
from an alcoholic, a womanizer, and an aging Mafioso!
