Thank you for replying so quickly. I've read the caresheet now and found it extremely helpful. Before reading it, I didn't know that they were hemophiliacs, and I can see now how horrible an idea spaying was. I have more questions, though. Do the boys spray? Are the boys any different than the girls when it comes to behavior. I read on the caresheet that your girl usually showed more affection, but is that the norm?
@MrsMonkeyMuffin I think the boys tend to be more outgoing and girls a little more of a one person animal but they all have their own personalities so nothing is certain there. They don;t spray but both can let off a bit of a smell when scared or stressed and do dribble urine as they run around like rats do.
Oh, and on more thing... If I get a girl, what should I expect when her heat comes along? Should I get her spayed if I don't plan to breed, or would that be a bad idea?
@MrsMonkeyMuffin Pua gets more hyper and they do leave bloody discharge. This happens monthly. No you can't spay them they will almost surely die. They are hemophiliacs and very delicate.
hi. I'm considering getting a tamandua as a pet. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before hand. I've been researching them online, and most places say that you're the person to ask, so I guess I'll just ask. What is the best way to house train them? How many times a day should I feed them and how much food per feeding? How well do they get along with other animals?
@MrsMonkeyMuffin Have you read the caresheet and FAQ? You can find them on Hubpages. You can give them treats for going where you want though it helps to put a pad or tray where they most like to go. They will never be 100% and will dribble pee as they run around like rats do only being bigger is more messy. I leave food out for them whenever they are awake but they ear around 1.5 to 2 cups a night.
They are not aggressive with other animals but will defend themselves & do not like them either
