The vid was made for people to watch and see what they DIDN'T see if they weren't looking. Viewers were just told to count the number of passes that players made.

As they were not looking for the gorilla, even when it beats its chest, they didn't register its appearance.

It's a from a psych department examining how perception fails to see stuff if you are not expecting it - important information for road safety campaigns.

I was only pointing out the fact that this video/commercial had already been made, and that the youtube phenomenon of "reenacting" videos and movie scenes is ridiculous.

And at the bottom of my comment, I was asking about why the gorilla (or whatever creature) walking through the reenactments (not the original) always has to be acted with that melancholy posture, as though that makes it funnier or cooler.

This video is actually used on commercials as public service announcements. They ask you to count the passes, but then at the end of the commercial they ask if you saw the gorilla move through the crowd... It's to test your awareness when driving. Which all in all is total bullshit, because no one just stares at the road and nowhere else. The perception test is inaccurate and majorly flawed. There, I've said my piece :)

We all notice things other people miss and vice versa, while some people's vision can be unfathomably different. It has nothing to do with concentration levels or observational skills. It's fun/interesting/not interesting at all, depending on your point of view.....

I can agree with you to some extent. The full purpose of it IS to point out the fact that you cannot pay full attention to two things at once. It plays along with those people who "think" they can drive to their full efficiency while talking on a cell phone for example. Those who clearly saw the gorilla just simply didn't focus on counting the ball passes, but I'm sure those same people are still unable to fully focus on two things at once.

But that is not to say you CANT drive while talking on a cell phone. It just means that your reaction time, attention to things on the side of the road, etc. will be less noticeable. I'm sure those who counted the passes saw the pavement, the wall behind the kids, etc. in this vid. Just like how a cell phone driver will still see the road and cars dead a head of them, but their reaction time towards a truck running a stop light will be much less while talking on a cell phone.
