Like I said on another video like this, I'd rather take a full on flogging than a Joe Friday dressing down. At least the scars from the flogging will heal and fade in time. The dressing down will last a lifetime.
jack is such a killjoy. Allright already we get the point:policework is not a glamorous job. You kind of could have said it in one sentence. Not 100 short sentences. But thats why we love our Jack.
if there were more police like friday and gannon life would be great. gannon was great but whipped by ilene over wallpaper and stupid ass dinner, joe friday was all about the buisness!
Born in Santa Monica, California, Webb grew up in the Bunker Hill slum section of Los Angeles. His Jewish father left home before Webb was born, and Webb never knew him. He was raised a Roman Catholic by his mother. One of the tenants in his mother's rooming house was an ex-jazzman who began Webb's lifelong interest in jazz by giving him a recording of Bix Beiderbecke's "At the Jazz Band Ball." Webb graduated from Belmont High School in Los Angeles. He then studied art.
He was a very competent actor, who had no trouble learning a lot of lines and delivering them in his trademark crips way. He wrote some scripts himself. He had input in the scripts written by others. He was smart enough to start and run his own production company. His reputation as a smart guy with a feel for a good script attracted the best writers in the business.
As Webb aged, his face betrayed a growing sadness. I bet it was because his marriages didn't last.
Webb was the best. THE face of the LAPD in many ways. And nobody told it straighter than him. "...sick kinds, dying kids, DEAD kids..." Gives me chills to hear this again.
My dad worked nights in downtown L.A., Boyle Heights, Chinatown...delivery work. The boys in blue took good care of him and watched his back. I'll always owe them for that. Webb made sure that at least one public voice was telling it like it was. Thanks for posting.
@mattleemattlee123 Right on! The LAPD had such respect for Jack Webb, when he passed away, they gave him Badge # 714 Sergeant I think I have seen every episode 15 times or better.
Thanks for posting this. I always shiow this to my "rookies" as a part of their training. While something have changed, a lot of it is still true today as when Jack first spoke the gospel of policework

You have to give Kent McCord credit for not putting a rope around his neck during that!

@littlelouie11 Sometimes to reach someone you must lay all the cards on the table and thats exactly what Friday was doing.

This speech and that of "The Great Departure" are definitely my favorites! Thanks for posting!

This is why the L.A.P.D gave Jack Webb a funeral with full police honors.

this is one of my favorite "Jesus Speeches" of Jack's, The video drops off though, does anyone have a better copy?

Go to Dailymotion and search for "Dragnet - To Be a Cop". It has much better video and sound.
