For those with the black background, try this:

Create a Solid (instead of Adjustment layer) and place it under the image with the text. Then add a 4 colour-gradient, that is a probable workaround..

@battingbacon1 Ok, if you go to render settings (right of render), you can see a lot of options. Go to Save output (I believe that's it, can't remember) and you'll see a dropdown bar. Click on it and select PNG, JPG, whatever you need, THEN render it. It should work :)
