Diamonds would still have a value even if the industry was competitive. In that case their value probably would be comparable to other precious stones. They would certainly not be worthless, unless people stop wearing jewellery.
I wonder, without the DeBeers monopoly of the diamond market, how much would a 1 carat VVS1, D color diamond be worth for. I think it is true that diamonds are not really rare, and that there's enough for every single person on this planet, but what's rare are diamonds that are flawless or near to flawless in clarity, and those are the ones that are supposed to be really expensive.
It doesn't matter how much they'd be worth, probably close to nothing, if De Beers didn't have a monopoly on the diamond trade then they wouldn't have a value, becasue they wouldn't a have twisted several cultures into believing that diamonds are forever and are beautiful and natural, yes they are natural, but De Beers is full of shit, for lack of a better term, as I'm doing a project in ethics concerning the micro and macro analysis of add's and strategetic campaigns.
