I remember the first time I saw this, it was on a special weekly "program" called "Monday's Newcomers" where they played all the new adverts for the coming week. I've never quite figured out why, but the versions in Monday's Newcomers were often longer than the versions that were aired, making me wonder why they never showed the longer versions during the week, and why bother making longer versions if they were never used?
I remember that my mother had a cereal bowl with the red and white straws all around it and words above the straws saying "watch out for the Humphrey patrol"
Thanks for posting this, I remember it really well, but my wife (a year older than me) does not. Was it a regional (midlands) thing or nationwide? As 'er in door's grew up in the Peterborough area.
Thanks, Its not just a midlands thing then. My other half grew up in "The Deepings" near Peterborough which is a bit "out in the sticks", so maybe Humphrey never made it there. Me n my little bro had the stickers too. We used to blag the odd ride in the milk float round to the next street or 2. It wouldn't be allowed these days, even if your kids could find an electric milk float. Happy days.
@Floobegusted - Mike Batt (who also wrote the jingle) is small, so he's got quite a high voice. Likewise, Leo Sayer and Benny Gallagher (of Gallagher & Lyle) are both small and have high voices.
god i remember so well how everyone went mad on this ad back in the day. we didn't have satellite tv or cable back then - blimey, we only had 3 channels!
anyway, it took me right back to being a kid again, thanks!
brilliant. my late father worked for unigate as a fitter. he got a load of these straws for when we went on holiday in a caravan in harlech.n wales . and my elder cousins scared us by passing the windows with the straws. we really thought the humphreys were coming. i was about 6-8 yrs old so this was about 1976-1978 i think...

I was a kid when these ads were on.
If my missus finishes her curry first she's after me with her spoon and describes herself as a Humphrey.

I know what you mean. Sounds like the same singer who did the wombles' voices.

I don't know if he wrote it, but Mike Batt is the singer on this jingle.
