How the hell do you beat Garl? That guy is standing in the midst of the water. And he´s carrying a huge mace or somthing. Is it even possible to beat him at "that" spot in melee?

This game and dark souls, your basically the villain. Your doing most of the stuff for yourself, and even though you may have good intentions or you have no choice, your still that bad guy in the end.
@Triixster You arent really the bad guy. In both games, your enemies/adversaries did some pretty stupid shit to get into the situations they are in. theres a reason Astraea has a demons soul and not a normal one.
I mean, look at dark souls and Quelaag, one might say "Oh, she was just protecting her sister!" but she was LURING PEOPLE INTO HER CAVE so she can sap their humanity and feed it to her. Thats not someone im going to sympathize with, especially when they are trying to eat me.

A woman missled in her conviction and faith, Maiden Astraea took apon the burden of a demon soul to try and save the decrepid souls of the defiled valley from a lifetime of pain, by ending it once and for all. her only companion, garl vinland, protects her with his equally immortal and demonic burden, as he carries such love for his Maiden he dare not leave her, even with the demonic ichor coursing through her veins being more than enough to save her...its sad really, what many will go to...

The one thing I hated in Demon's Soul was being unable to choose my own path (except for the very end of the game). If I could, I would take sides with Astraea and Garl and I would destroy this damn clerics that talk trash of her while she sacrificed herself to try to diminish the suffering of this doomed place. Good thing that in Dark Souls you can choose to not be manipulated by the gods and their minions.

The thing is, the description of Astraea (and according to Freke) is that she took a Demon Soul. She became corrupted, despite trying to come and do a good thing. A good description of it is on a giantbomb thread, check out the discussion. Search for "how was maiden astraea evil?" Ultimately, as moving as this was, you should not feel as though you became a true demon. You should feel as though you, sadly, were the arbiter of true justice, reclaiming a demon soul from someone who gave in.

If I remember correctly the real Astrea is the Ragged Woman in the swamp. She sells temple knight armor, once worn by Garl Vinland- and upon killing her you also get a crest of the vinland- or something.
@ReMykks Thats not true. Going by what you're saying that means that this battle has no literary climactic value since, by your logic, they are malevolent demons. But they were not, they were altruistic. This was MEANT to be one of the final battles and your act of killing them was meant to symbolize that you, the player, in your quest to rid the world of demons, ultimately became the worst demon of all.

Maiden Astrea took on a Demon's Soul so she could have more power to protect and save the people in the valley, and the soul corrupted her. Garl Vinland stayed loyal to her to the very end like a good bodyguard should.
So no, she's technically not evil, but an Archdemon nontheless.
Also, you get Vinland's armor from him when you kill him instead of the Maiden in the boss fight. I should know, I have it.
@ChaoticSorceror you can still get it from him if you killed aestrea instead. Just take her soul, leave the place, then come back. His armour should be in a pile where he spawns (it's implied that he commits suicide)
@ReMykks you get the crest of vinland by killing the black phantom form of garl vinland. It's not a fun fact if it's speculation. The ragged woman herself tells the player that the archdemon aestrea is, in fact, aestrea...
higher production values for dark souls.....means no more 10 piece orchestra :[ it makes me sad, i like the music in dark souls, it just doesnt have that desolate feeling behind every song anymore.

I was definitely what you call, the greedy savage. I took one good look at Garl's armour and weapon and thought to myself "Fuck this... you're going down. I need a piece of that." The remainder that's left from killing these two is also quite sad, it just goes completely quiet... and while you reflect on what you've done... "YOU'VE CAUGHT THE PLAGUE!" Oh shit!
I felt guilty when I kill her knight then she kill herself, this is the only part of the game in history that I nearly cry If, this was real I more likely be her servant for my rest of my life she not really bad.

I never ever cry...but Astrea the fight wasn't even a fight. It felt wrong to kill her. I dont care what anyone says game or not. It just didn't feel right I actually began questioning the game hell it made me cry. I just killed someone who was helping others and only wanted to be left alone.

When doing this battle, it truly hurt to kill Maiden Astraea, she gave up her entire life to help the needy, sick and lame, a life, where she was top of her field not just any life. And I had to KILL her... I... Couldn't look her in the eye, I had to fire from afar... And when that God fellow insulted her, I unequipped my sword and I beat the CRAP out of him with my fists... She was worth a million of you... Or me... This music reflects those feels...

This was an unexpected boss fight, in that it actually challenged your motivations and morals - something you never even considered in the game up until then. It was brief, but damn was it poignant.

@SHlNOBl3 It's not a glitch. Garl only attacks for defensive purposes (the goal is to make you feel worse about what you're doing). Even BP Garl only attacks if you hit him/get close enough.
the first time i played he was directly in front of astrea, so i thought that was a glitch cause the 2nd playthrough, he was alot closer to me, and the other 6 times i beat the game
i remember goin pretty slow and was confused what to do. i dunno wtf though, he didnt move at all and i avoided hittin him, i was wonderin why that was the worst boss fight in the game, i was like "wtf this is way easier then the other bosses, theres noone tryin to kill me"
@SHlNOBl3 Probably the hardest thing to get past in the game. Plague + swarms of babies + boss battle = Frustration/Death beyond belief. Well, to be fair, you could always reload your game file lol.

@dragonfighter02 PS3 broke down last month still trying to get enough money to have it fixed or replaced, really wished it was on the 360 ( I have all current gen systems minus the 3ds which I won't even touch intill it's upgrade comes out) so I could keep playing, Oh well can't wait till Dark Souls comes out, once I fix my system I'm erasing all my completed games (including this one) and play them anew (Its my style if I've collected almost everthing important in the game)

@dragonfighter02 will do, I'm a new yorker does that answer your question,, Dark Souls is a spirtual successor to Demon Soul (produced by bandai but designed by From Software the creators of this awesome game) you find E3 footage here on youtube, its expected to come out around the start of October, It will have more equipment spells and will be alot more open world then Demon Souls with It's world(s), also it will be alot harder then Demon Souls.
Even if she had pure intentions or whatever, all those weird plauge babies and the almost literal mountain of corpses near her kept me from thinking that she hasn't, well, 'caused great pain and needed to go. That said, when this music started playing I declared this to be the most beautiful part of the game.
Ok i don't really understand that oh well it makes you see that you're become consumed by hunger for souls but the thing is its necessary to stop the old one. You can't look at it as you're doing something necessary to put an end this catastrophe which killed almost everyone in an entire kingdom?
Impure piety and impious purity... That's the best way to describe Astraea. She sold her soul in order to do what she felt was right and I can't fault her for that. She actually did something, unlike Saint Urbain. Yes, she lost her faith in God. However, she chose to protect the weak and depraved WITHOUT faith in God. I think that speaks much more highly of her character than had she retained her faith.
Ironically enough people... if you allow yourself to be swayed by the apparent "atrocity" of "collecting" the demon soul within her... You, yourself, have been affected by her. You are in danger of beccoming a "Most impure soul". Do not lose your faith or your way... DO not forget WHY you are here... xD
The taint comes from losing ones way. I do know Astraea was, in every sense of the meaning, a saint. I believe she gave in to her emotions based on a snap judgement of ill-gotten, ambiguous information of thein-games "God". This lead her to take within her a demons soul.
Basically, although she remained a saint with "pure" intentions (kind acts of healing etc... on the outside), she lost her faith. And such, her true way... She is most impure of all other demon-souls because of this...
This whole fight changes your whole outlook on the game . . . . You realize that you are becoming like every one in the nexus. Letting your hunger for Demon's Souls take you over.
Ok people I don't understand why all of you people feel so baaad and remoorseful when killing the two. The woman was possessed by a demon..she wasn't doing any good even though she intended to. For instance notice the pile of dead bodies near her with blood scaling in her direction...and the plague babies in the swamp in front of her..doesn't sound like anything great came from her or her demon..so she had to go..Garl too if he wanted to protect such an atrosity...

To all you people who keep saying "I was the Black Phantom" or "This shows how greedy your character is for souls"... You obviously haven't been listening to the storyline. The archdemons (Astraea included) needed to be killed in order to lull the Old One back to its slumber. Sure it might be sad that you had to kill her but you needed to pay a small price to save the world. It's more sad when you kill the Maiden in Black at the end in my opinion.

This was MEANT to be one of the final battles and your act of killing them was meant to symbolize that you, the player, in your quest to rid the world of demons, ultimately became the worst demon of all.

@ReMykks Interesting theory, but an incorrect one.
Maiden Astrea took on a Demon's Soul so she could have more power to protect and save the people in the valley, and the soul corrupted her. Garl Vinland stayed loyal to her to the very end like a good bodyguard should.
So no, she's technically not evil, but an Archdemon nontheless.
Also, you get Vinland's armor from him when you kill him instead of the Maiden in the boss fight. I should know, I have it.

@ChaoticSorceror you can still get it from him if you killed aestrea instead. Just take her soul, leave the place, then come back. His armour should be in a pile where he spawns (it's implied that he commits suicide)

I never ever cry...but Astrea the fight wasn't even a fight. It felt wrong to kill her. I dont care what anyone says game or not. It just didn't feel right I actually began questioning the game hell it made me cry. I just killed someone who was helping others and only wanted to be left alone.

When doing this battle, it truly hurt to kill Maiden Astraea, she gave up her entire life to help the needy, sick and lame, a life, where she was top of her field not just any life. And I had to KILL her... I... Couldn't look her in the eye, I had to fire from afar... And when that God fellow insulted her, I unequipped my sword and I beat the CRAP out of him with my fists... She was worth a million of you... Or me... This music reflects those feels...

@SHlNOBl3 It's not a glitch. Garl only attacks for defensive purposes (the goal is to make you feel worse about what you're doing). Even BP Garl only attacks if you hit him/get close enough.

@dragonfighter02 PS3 broke down last month still trying to get enough money to have it fixed or replaced, really wished it was on the 360 ( I have all current gen systems minus the 3ds which I won't even touch intill it's upgrade comes out) so I could keep playing, Oh well can't wait till Dark Souls comes out, once I fix my system I'm erasing all my completed games (including this one) and play them anew (Its my style if I've collected almost everthing important in the game)

Impure piety and impious purity... That's the best way to describe Astraea. She sold her soul in order to do what she felt was right and I can't fault her for that. She actually did something, unlike Saint Urbain. Yes, she lost her faith in God. However, she chose to protect the weak and depraved WITHOUT faith in God. I think that speaks much more highly of her character than had she retained her faith.

The taint comes from losing ones way. I do know Astraea was, in every sense of the meaning, a saint. I believe she gave in to her emotions based on a snap judgement of ill-gotten, ambiguous information of thein-games "God". This lead her to take within her a demons soul.
Basically, although she remained a saint with "pure" intentions (kind acts of healing etc... on the outside), she lost her faith. And such, her true way... She is most impure of all other demon-souls because of this...

Ok people I don't understand why all of you people feel so baaad and remoorseful when killing the two. The woman was possessed by a demon..she wasn't doing any good even though she intended to. For instance notice the pile of dead bodies near her with blood scaling in her direction...and the plague babies in the swamp in front of her..doesn't sound like anything great came from her or her demon..so she had to go..Garl too if he wanted to protect such an atrosity...

To all you people who keep saying "I was the Black Phantom" or "This shows how greedy your character is for souls"... You obviously haven't been listening to the storyline. The archdemons (Astraea included) needed to be killed in order to lull the Old One back to its slumber. Sure it might be sad that you had to kill her but you needed to pay a small price to save the world. It's more sad when you kill the Maiden in Black at the end in my opinion.
