Although I know the commercial is meant to be silly and somewhat surreal, it's the blank look on the daughter's face at the end that makes it especially funny to me. It's like she's realizing for the first time that her goofy costume-wearing dad might really think he is the sun and gone weird-o-rama on her. I'm probably over-thinking this . . .
I figure most people took the commercial at face value with the Sun Dad character actually being The Sun. I took a different slant on it by making the presumption that the daughter doesn't really notice the sun costume at all. Their banter worked on 2 levels whether the dad was the sun or not up until the end when he says he has to light and heat the earth. That's when the daughter gets the my-daddy-might-be-a-wacko look on her face and can't muster another "Why ?". Bit of a stretch I know . . .
How 'bout this alternate scenario? The daughter is cool with the dad wearing the goofy costume but draws the line and bails on the conversation when he says he has to light and heat the earth, especially in that "matter of fact" tone. I just think the commercial is funnier if you don't think the dad is "actually the sun".
I must say, this witty banter between you and the video poster is rather enjoyable. I wish the majority of YouTube posters were intelligent and had more relevant things to say. "Ur gay" gets extremely old.
I think that actress is adorable and super-talented...I loved the concept, the directing, and if we have to watch commercials on TV...at least let's watch some great ones...and this always makes me smile. Personally, I prefer fresh food...but who needs to get political over EVERYTHING???
y'know, i was looking for this commercial, a long time, myself. i saw that no one else in you|tube had a copy, so i just went and tracked the sucker down, personally. it took me a while, but, it was worth it.
i think she's pretty good, myself.. ..i wonder what other projects she's worked on, since this one.
The dramatic tension is established by the kid's need to know "why" to a question that is too painful for the father to answer. In this iteration of this drama, the Sun is,perhaps, a laid off ad executive. After months and months of seeking executive jobs, he answered the ad under "Advertising" that was for a man in a suit. Savings dwindling, he took the job. Wife must go back to work. Thrust into this new role, he attempts to keep up the facade of having a big important job to his daughter.
I just think this first version of the Sun commercial is a well-done riff on the Kramer vs Kramer theme of "man living behind a domestic facade" while grappling with his desire to provide for his family. Really don't think there's much more that I could add. Beyond that I'm just reading ink blots. Thoughts?
it was beyond my realm of knowledge, that this was based on the kramer/kramer...
...so for That i will have to take your word.
at this point, i am inclined to agree with you about the reading of the ink blots. but it's cool, though, since, in this instance, no real harm was done.
i can see you felt rather deeply about this commercial though! maybe even more than I did.
I thought it was a nice story. I thought that it was brilliant advertising. Playing simultaneously on two levels to the same point: 1.Frustrated dads thrust into the mommy role: take heart. You are not alone and there is a solution. 2. Frustrated dads in the dad role: take heart, you can still be the Sun. The KvK is the channel into the subconscious based on existing associations. This ad was panned by experts initially who did not get it.
Ad critics at (I think) Ad Week or Ad Age. They apparently saw it on a literal level:man in a cheesy looking sun costume making breakfast. They missed all the texture of the story. They apparently interpreted the the suit as just a cheap special effect! You are right that it is amusing even without the KvK context amazing that they did not get it. Commercial has been running for some time and the campaign seems to have been pretty effective, right?
This is one of the great campaigns of our times. On one level it is a story about the sun getting up to make breakfast. First "That's not how mommy makes it" is a clear reference from the movie "Kramer vs Kramer". Where the son tells the father that he's not making the French toast the same way mommy makes it. The frustrated dad is trying to stay in this new character called "nurturer" and not scream to the kid "MOMMIE"S NOT GOING TO MAKE BREAKFAST BECAUSE MOMMIE'S" FUCKING GONE!!!"

@jbeautiful38 and so was the musical cue that went along with it.

i do believe so.
this commercial certainly is "old": it will be almost 2 years that i'd posted this.. ..and i remember looking for it, for several months prior.
so it's been around for a while, certainly.

ya know?
you're probably right about that, too.
on the other hand, in terms of the realm of the commercial its self, i do believe it was accepted that the guy was actually The Sun.
but, at the moment, i really can't think of any strong reason why your explanation isn't correct, either. i never thought about it, up until now.

so, Dad would need to be put into a mental institution.
(that is where I would ship him, under such extreme circumstances.)
masic88 3 years ago
Sounds a bit drastic. A few intense therapy sessions may be in order though . . .

something would have to be done about such insanity.
(of course, we cannot forget giving treatment to our Moon Friend, or our Cloud Friend: who The Sun goes to work with.)

of course i agree with you, here.
unfortunately, the majority of you|tube posters are, ironically, Gay.
well, no.. ..to draw such a comparison between actual homosexuals and *these* peoples' level of genius would be quite the discredit to the former.
so, i'll deem those individuals "suck-assèd". or, better yet: "dubyabushian".
at any rate, i do enjoy some witty reparté, every now and then. it's what keeps me sane. in this insane little world. known as You|Tube.
