good advice never get on a horse's back they sense something wrong .i tried that one time he didnt kick but tried to stand up and flipped back he didnt hurt anyone because we saw it coming on his back .he just slammed the floor ,ever since horses are nice from a distance

horses don't like the smell of dead animals, its a prey instinct to flee the smell of death because of wolves and such, but I have to agree with Chaemb.. the horse wasn't ready to be a pack horse and should have had more work done at the ranch with loading and unloading dead deer and stuff in a safe area before being taken on a hunting trip.. When a horse is freaked out, ears pointed your way...fidgeting to try to move away...best just back off as you are just asking for a train wreck.

Alot of posts here talk about the smell of blood...while this might have been a contributing factor I suspect that two people carrying something caused two things to happen. What was approaching did not look human(it was larger, unfamiliar and more menacing) and the way they moved (due to the weight) seemed like they were sneaking up slowly.

Just because people use horses to pack out game does not mean they are stupid rednecks....you try packing out a 1000lb elk by yourself in the middle of no where and let me know how it works out...yes the horse probably needed a little more work to be ok with the smell of blood, but using them as pack animals is smart especially when you are putting food on your table.

The guy in the forefront was in the right position. I've worked with race horses, who are more nervous and thus more dangerous. When we got one who was skiddish, we knew to "hug" close to the horse, so he shoves you instead of kicks you, and not stand back any where in a kicking range, and that is a long range. The guys behind the horse need to stand thirty feet away if they aren't "hugging". the horse..By the way, this is not funny stuff. Still, it was a stangel place to try this.
