We had a different variation in western Canada. Step back and forward with one foot twice then do the same with other foot, after that move foot out to side twice then do the same with other foot. Then comes the razzle dazzle move of spinning(360) with your feet close together. Repeat moves over again. Well, something like that.
There were all kinds of variations of this. This version is influenced by the kind done in "Saturday Night Fever." We were taught to do it in Physical Education class in elementary school in 1975, so I'm old enough to remember seeing rooms full of people doing the Hustle in unison to disco and funk music. My favorite variation of the Hustle was one where you brought your knee up and touched it to the opposite elbow at the "corner" of the square you're making.
