We all need to take responsibility for how to coordinate our lives so that plastic pollution doesn't kill us off. It is up to each one of us to do a simple thing. Recycle, refuse plastic that can't be recycled and stop disposing of things that cannot rapidly decompose and give back to the land.
before white men entered africa was there a pollution crisis? were animals about to become extinct? no. im white but i can take the blame where necessary

Try this people. Leave a plastic bag in your yard in the same spot for 2 weeks. Now, pick it up. WOW look at all THE LIFE THAT IS THRIVING! Bugs, micro-organisms, molds ect. Plastic IN THE LANDFILL IS GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!!!!!!!!!
I think the USA should ban plastic bags, too. They are the biggest environmental problem we face today. Animals die from ingesting plastic. It pollutes the environment, clogs waterways, is unsightly, and provides a haven for mosquitoes and bacteria by trapping rain water. At the very least, we should be charging shoppers at the cash register for every plastic bag they use. I have cloth bags that I take with me when I'm shopping, and feel really bad if I forget them.
Since I have lived in Uganda myself for several years I am aware this is an issue. However, they should do like they do in Rwanda.. use other kinds of bag..
Well, you can't just ban it. You also have to offer alternatives, and you have to help out those who will be impacted by the ban. I'm glad they banned the bags, but they could have done better...
perchance there are other economic and social issues that need attention before the ban on plastic bags. If the woman in the video had another mean to make a living, or if there were other forms of bagging that were cheaper and just a useful as plastic bags then maybe there wouldn't be so much resistance towards the ban.
Of course there are alternatives to plastic bags. The Luo of around Lave Victoria have for billions of years been making "okap"(bag) out of "othith", a natural material similar to palm tree leaves or even from "tworo" (sisal). Such bags are not only strong but can be washed and dried in the sun. They are practical for shopping and other uses too. They are very nice looking and and part of nature. Like any other leaves they finally rot and become soil.
yeh they should do what we the "Luo" do and make eco friendly bags. Just for the record most of us in the Luo tribe live in Lira and Apac, not around the lake victoria.
Thanks for enlightening me on that last point. I suppose I should also mention that all along the Nile, passing through Southern Sudan and beyond Kar Tum (Khartoum) the Luo (Dinka, Anwak etc) make very eco friendly baskets and earthern pots.
"Billions of years"? That IS amazing, considering humans have only been around for about 200,000 years. ;o] But yeah, I get what you mean. Reusable bags are definitely better. The poorest nations of the world cannot afford to let the environment get destroyed, since they rely upon it so much for growing food. Convenience should not take precedence over the long-term health and well-being of a country.
Continue to ban. It is a nuisance. It destroys our inviroment.

Obviously the problem is not plastic bags, it's the fact that people litter...take away bags and some other shit gets thrown on the ground.

Do people honestly have to always put the blame on someone? Stop the hate, there is no reason for it. Especially over the internet.

We should activate 'Green' bags there as well as everywhere in the world...if they stop making it, they'll stop using it... Start with a small goal.

They should import jute bags from Bangladesh and India. Cheap and eco-friendly.
