Wow. Those ripping on the Mom aren't getting the point...this is what poverty and ignorance does to ppl. Considering her education level it's amazing that her kids survived at all...it could have been so much worse. The fact that she saved real money and wanted a better life, that she wasn't some super human genius who could rise above her fate..just regular folk in a 'natural' setting...no TV to sell them a fake life. Wonder where they are now in 2012?
all her children are shifty eyed weirdos like her mother; shes clearly got mental illness but thats no excuse; and living with 2 old men what a sick disgusting woman, id beat the shit outa her if i ever met her. worthless slime hope she burns to death in i fire. i feel horrible for her children. she smacks her kids for doing anything, what an abusive bitch. no wonder her husband left. sicko freak piece of human shit blobus scum. why would they give her grandchild to her? sick fuck pieces of shit
what an awful woman, ive never seen such abuse; just smacking the kid as hard as she can because the kid is rocking on her lap; thats not discipline thats abuse. the look of rage in her eyes is psychotic. kids like to run around theyre energetic and loud; if you didnt know that you shouldnt be having children. and dont give me that different time bullshit; the only thing different about it was sheer stupidity.
This lady comes from a different erra due to the ecconomic hardships in the area she was raised. The way she reprimands her children is probably milder than the way she herself was reprimanded. She is a good Mom, she attempts to be the best she can. They do not have TV and all the other garbage to clutter their lives and each day is filled with more struggle than most people would dare to undertake. Those of you who critisize have no humanity and have led spoiled lives, walk in her shoes
"Some even believe we (the Rockefeller family) are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure---one world, if you will. If that's the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it."
WOW! people sure are quick to throw stones.your talking about a 1970's women held up in a shack with 4 kids,no running water,no help from dad,no where to go and nothing to do.while she is pretty ruff on the kids they also look to be in good shape and well fed.lets put all of these people in her place and see how nice they can be day in and day out.she was born into this people I don't think she woke up one day and said (I think I'll be poor).glass houses, who will thow the first stone? remember?
10 minutes 22 seconds is enough watching for me. This creature is obviously the product of a similar upbringing. Horrible, nasty, useless waste of air. If there is any kindness in the US of Abusers, I hope those kids were taken from her, and placed into families who can show loving kindness and don't have to communicate through violence. Best place for her is in a padded cell or padded box, you know the depth, BITCH...
I'm glad it's not just me who sees the abusive nature. Where's the love for the child? It took no more than 2 minutes of the actual family footage before you can hear her hit the child with the almost meter length of wood. which she comes back into the "kitchen" and places upon the cooker or worktop. She'll never read this comment, so it's a bit pointless, but if you bring up kids like her... you're trash, who deserves to be thrashed with birtch branches, or have you'r eyes removed, slowly.
absolutely no parenting skills, it is a shame to see someone like this keep popping out children who have no chance in this world=this is what the welfare system supports, they should make her work for her welfare benefits
Horrible, abusive mother, unfaithful wife, willfully ignorant and proud of it. This woman is nobody's role. And when her children prove to be unfit parents themselves, where does the county place their children? With the awful mother who produced the unfit parents in the first place. No wonder her children despise her, and ended up chain-smoking meth addicts. (Who would hire this person to care for an Alzheimers patient?) Now she's playing the "poor me, my kids never call" story for sympathy.
1. It was a relief to see that these kids survived childhood! I am not assigning blame or standing in judgment, but they were unquestionably abused physically, emotionally and were not well provided for.
2. Darlene saved $20,000 during the 70s and 80s while living in abject poverty with 5 children. $20,000 during those decades would be the equivalent of saving over $50,000 today. That is incredibly strange and the documentarians should have expanded on that.
One more thing, those kids needed lots of water and a good multi vitamin. Moving on...where was Habitat for Humanity?? I thought that organization was in place to assist people like Darlen and her family, no?
wow.what struck me the most was the premature ageing of darlene and her kids.they seemed to have enough to eat which i was glad for but, tracy seemed to have some really hard miles on her at a young age heartbreaking. thanks for the post.....
@scraps270 Having enough to eat isn't enough, it's the quality of the food. They probably eat lots of sugary foods and junk. Unfortunitely, bad nutrition and eating habits are very common amongst poverty ridden folks. They don't have any running water, so i doubt they are getting hydrated by water consumption. Those kids are probably iron deficiant also, not getting enough lean meats and greens, but sugary cereals. They are in serious need of eye glasses too.
@homemanager12 I have to keep pausing it, and I'm only at 14 min in it but she doesn't seem abusive, she seems attentive and loving, looks like it is just culture, with a little modeling I think she would have been a good mother. She is just primitive.
People may be poor, but that doesn't mean they have to keep their houses and yards in a mess. There's an attitude problem, for sure. We didn't have much money growing up, but our house was clean and our clothes were mended, and we weren't crying all the time, and our mother wasn't slapping us and yelling at us all the time.
Appalachia is proof solid that poverty is a lifestyle choice in America. I feel no pity for anyone who lives there. Bad choices result in bad outcomes. Bad outcomes teach important life lessons. The government needs to stop trying to help these people because the government only makes it worse. Instead let nature take its course so the rest of America can learn first hand how bad life can really become.
@Ranger4402 Yeah, lets not help these people who have been here 15 generations, lets help the rest of the world. If u get sick, please let nature take it's course.
@tommyleewelch Well put? This is difficult to believe, and yet I'm reading it, so someone did compose it. It's a very sad state when people respond to these things the way that you are.
Seems like she really hits that little girl every 10 minutes for no reason. I cringe every time. That girl must have felt hated. I wonder if she was ever kind or loving in any way to her.
It's a well-done documentary on a modest budget, and a sad story. I think there's a lesson to be learned here about parenting and childhood experiences. The abuse the mom directs at the kids in the beginning comes back to haunt her in the end--none of them will speak with her. Furthermore, you can see the vibrant spirit the kids have in young adulthood dissipates as they age and make some of the same mistakes the mother had made in terms of relationships, employment, lifestyle choices, etc.
book iroquois women fives hope of how grandmas and aunts always help the mothers and children- if she depends on man- she ll have 2 /3 times more pregnancies and kids than she planned
