@1aberbeeg LOL! I'm genuinely jealous of not having been around in the 60s, hippy chicks must've been the greatest! (PS hope you don't mean the 6 bells in West Drayton)
cream always rises to the top: there were people saying the very same things about Manfred and the like ("It wont last" "call that music?" etc etc) I know: I listened to them - both. My 18 year old son plays me the music he likes: all 21st century stuff from this decade and I have to say I am truly impressed. We both like music from 60s and subsequent decades but I would never say "music is not as good now" and if I did I think I would need to get out more........
@overner2001 what a refreshing approach to the subject of pop music, I think the 60s and 70s were brilliant but that's not to say that there are no good groups around today.
@pinchold Though I don't consider "bubble-gum" a pejorative, this seems too wordy to fit that term. It sounds more like power-pop, except for the emphasis on keyboards, rather than guitar. I think DDBMT might have nailed the bubble-gum thing before anyone else with "Hold Tight" a little earlier in 1966.
Manfredd Mann one of my favourits groups. . excellent singer ! - today no one can produce this kind of music anymore. they die out after a year or so . while group of the famouse 60 ties goes on and on.. never dies..
When I first heard this, when it came out, I was a kid and I'd never heard a pop record with a recorder on it.(it is a recorder I think), and I flipped..I thought it was FAB! Why don't today's young pop musicians experiment more? Is it because the industry is dominated by pricks like Simon Cowell?
@priapus56 I would have guessed it was a mellotron sampling a recorder. I wonder how
Simon Cowell would respond to something like this (not crappy enough?). Most of the performances when he was on AI were such insufferable crap, I've never found out if he likes much music that isn't. My neighbors watch AI religiously; when I walk by their door en rout to my basement, I'm tempted to block my ears to avoid all that whining.
@priapus56 It's actually the flute setting on a Mellotron. In the 60's record companies didn't really know what they were doing, so loads of great music got through their filter. Now the companies have almost complete control and only sanction more of the same stuff that sold well last week, so we get more Britney and Bieber clones.
Reminds me of some of the wonderful girls I dated in the 60s. Viva Six Bells girls.

This particular tune beckons me to don green tights and to imperil the scandalous rich in yon forest and glen.

I never knew Manfreds played bubble-gum music. Did they invent it? cos 1966 was before Ohio express made it popular.

Great song. The recorder vs. mellotron debate is answered on the live version available here on You Tube.

@priapus56 It's not a recorder, it's a Mellotron! Which is one of the reasons why I love it so much....
