We aren't really living in a democracy due to no one upholding the doctrine of democracy, the rich have more pull in the voting booths then the poor, Democracy was meant to take the voting card out of the rich hands and put it in the lower classes hands. The poor class in America doesn't really get a decent say in the matter, we get a choice. A choice isn't a say. Who creates these choices to vote on?

I hate to point this out, but the United States was set up as Democratic Republic, not a Democracy.
In a TRUE democracy if 51% of the people say rape should be legal, then it would be legal. TRUE democracy is mob rule. Or another analogy, a TRUE democracy is two WOLVES and a SHEEP voting on whats for DINNER.
A REPUBLIC is the RULE OF LAW, i.e. The Constitution, Bill of Rights. Etc.

A DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC is where you can vote to change or alter the laws in your area (district, county, state) as long as the new law doesn't violate FEDERAL law or any of the basic RIGHTS of any person under that law.
The basic rights are LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

part of your comment is correct. the founding fathers avoided the use of the term democracy because mob rule was commonly associated with the idea in the centuries past. but your other analogies, although maybe not inaccurate, are too loaded with negative imagery to objectively define the concept.
