"I'm frustrated by what I hear. Maybe it's not meant for me. Personally, I'm way too bright for a lot of the hip-hop lyrics to affect. I'm much too smart to think that jewelry or how cool I am is really going to change much about my personality. If you're dumb enough that it entertains you, have a great time. But I am seeking more than that.” -Tom Petty
Disrespect for the real artists is the ignorance seen in every aspect of life today, whick i thought of as something that caracterises only USA, but Europe is becoming, super bowl & hot dog nation too...
Respect for Detroit and everything they gave to our ears!
I'd bet this song (the last d.j.) is about Jim Ladd. He's the only original d.j. with the integrity to say it like it is, and mix segues with the music and lyrics to match! Thanks Jim for what you do.
who cares about todays music and radio stations we lived in a time when one generation will ever touch our worlds musications like tom petty stevie nicks fleetwood mac the eagles bob seager, neil young the list goes on and on in the70's and 80's.f--- them all.
Yup, we need Tom, Neil and all the other great artists, to fight back against the Corporate Music Bastards who have denied two generations their right to intelligent music, to briliant songwriters, to music that can, and did, change the world. They've been denied it because those in control are shit scared of the power they KNOW lies inside The Music. The internet is getting that power out again, igniting a whole new generation to open their eyes up to the unbelievable corruption in this world.
Tom is the last musician who's in the business for the music, not the money. The entire album tells you as much. to hell with conforming, Tom has always done music his way, and continues to today.
TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS RULE! WE SHALL OVERCOME, SOMEDAY! ---and the currently stinking pile of sludge crap that constitutes most of modern "music" FM Radio will someday be a long-forgotten thing of the past! YOU GO 'LAST DJ' ROCK ON, BROTHER!!
the fucking RECORD COMPANY/BIG RADIO EXEC FAGS JUST NEED TO GO CRAWL INTO A DARK, DAMP, DIRTY HOLE AND DIE. THEIR MURDER OF RADIO/CURRENT so-called "MUSIC" IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST ALL TIME ATROCITIES COMMITTED AGAINST ART/ FREEDOM OF SPEECH!
@lexmarks567 And isn't that just SO ridiculous and how about the I don't know how many second pauses on radio and t.v. Thank goodness for Sirius now and especially Tom's program on there and Bob Dylan's. You get what they are listening to from their collection and let's not forget Willie Nelson. These guys aren't afraid to voice their opinion and neither am I. Thanks for your post!
Thank God there are people like Neil Young and Tom Petty who are rich enough and established enough to TELL the TRUTH about how CRAPPY and manufactured the radio/music business is these days. (And a plug here for LIttle Steven's wonderful radio show that you don't have to pay/subscribe to hear!) Tom Petty is a mere mortal, but he's also a rock and roll saviour.
@rocktenniscat Tom Petty's experienced all the shit he's protesting about for himself. I know this because I watched a 4-hour documentary about him last night. Was very good.
@aliencheesemaker - I really want to see that film. Did you know....Don Felder, great guitar player - ex-Eagles - (another shitty rock and roll rip off story) was Petty's Guitar Teacher? Anyway, thanks for your comment....
Yeah, radio was the engine that drove rock and roll with smart DJs that understood what good NEW music was.
Now the damned bean-counters just play the same old crap because they were allowed to consolidate the public's airwaves. Screw Clear Channel, Cox Radio, and whole lot of 'em, they've ruined the radio.
I think they have an political agenda, to bore us all to death with mediocrity, or something worse.
If you want to see the music video for this song, it is on my profile. It isn't much of a music video, but rather the band playing the version which you hear on the album.
I'm not sure if it will stay up though because the record company might take it off, we'll see.
We have a DJ like that in Minnesota, Tom Barnard. KQ Morning show. Says what ever he wants, gets in trouble with the PC crowd often, but has the number 1 morning drive time show in the country.
dont forget this got banned from major radio, without a single hint of profanity or violence or sexuality. "how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free"
Great song but horrible editing. Tom Petty is laid back and smooth. This machine-gun style editing assumes we have the attention span of a hyperactive 5-year old. Totally goes against Petty's style.
Who else is the very best??? Who else takes you on a magic carpet ride, each night, through all the years, with each song, telling a story? JIM LADD...my hero!
So much has changed on the radio. Now all most staqtions play is crap. And just keep repeating crap over and over in the course of a day. Bull shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was lucky enough to see these batch of fellows play an off show in san bernadino 3 years ago with the black crowes as the opening act. i just want to say say that was one hell of a concert, especially because i was only 15 at the time. great music by great musicians, something you don't get anymore. such a damn shame.
Jim Ladd is an LA DJ and and rock interviewer, on one of his shows featuring Tom Petty, one or both of them alluded to the fact that it was about Jim, as well as other jocks probably. Petty and his band likely met more than one friendly radio jock in their tenure
No its def about Jim Ladd, if you lived in LA you would know that. The rumor about it being for Stern started when Stern stole it for his last episode before selling out to Sirius satellite radio. If anything Stern goes against everything Ladd and this song stand for.
Stern is not a DJ. He's a talk show jockey. He's not there to spin records and tell you the meaning behind them. And he left terrestrial radio because they were shutting him down in the wake of 9/11. Then Sirius backed the Brinks truck up to his door. I suppose you would say no to 1/2 a billion dollars if offered to you. And now the show is exactly the way he fought 25 years to make it. How is that selling out? This really has nothing to do with Stern actually.
I just got this song off of iTunes, how weird is that I buy the song and you post a live version of it on the same day? "There goes the last human voice" is my favorite line from the song.
BTW, are you a member of TP's message board? I'm known as Beatlesfan94 over there.
Lol you call this poor sound? It's incredible compared to many on here, maybe heavy on bass, it;s great :)
