the only logical explanation is that he meant to say "47" states. He clearly doesn't believe there are 57 states, because he says there is "1 left to go", which would make it 58. Then he says that he wasn't able to go to AK and HI, which would bring the total to 60. So, while it's possible that he believes there r 60 states, it's impossible that he believes there are just 57, despite the Islamic thing.
OTOH, 48 is the number of mainland states, excluding AK and HI.

Listen carefully and you can hear the audience react to Junior Senator Obama's gaffe. If he actually knew better, the reaction of people in the audience should have provided him the CLUE to correct himself immediately and it would never have been an issue of concern about his education or mental status. What's worse is that he grew up in the 50th state (as I did also) and, therefore, should have defaulted to that number (certainly after the audience reacted) even if he were fatigued.

Thank you for explaining this simple error for what is it. This amounts to a verbal typo, nothing more, nothing less. I'm sure the people who are most critical of this error voted for W in the 2004 and could care less about the intellectual prowess of candidates and are simply desperate for any flaws they can find in Obama. Listen carefully and you can hear the audience react to Junior Senator Obama's gaffe. If he actually knew better, the reaction of people in the audience should have provided him the CLUE to correct himself immediately and it would never have been an issue of concern about his education or mental status. What's worse is that he grew up in the 50th state (as I did also) and, therefore, should have defaulted to that number (certainly after the audience reacted) even if he were fatigued.

Actually, it really is the only explanation that makes sense! I can't imagine anyone seriously trying to make a bi deal out of this. What really counts is the policies of the man. Look out for what he has to say on real issues and make sure he really touches the issues that matter to you! Don't listen to the hype or the propaganda! Vote for him if you think his policies are right, not if you like the way he looks at you when you talk to him.....

Actually, that was my point! I don't quite get the hype about Obama. Ok, he draws crowds but for what? He hardly touches any issues and if he does mention something that matters (like pulling out of Iraq) he quickly backtracks given half a chance. But I still say: Vote for the man if you like his policies. First, make sure he is clear on REAL ISSUES. Bolivia could give a crash course on democracy to the american people. There, they know what they are voting for and they elect one of their own!

He started saying "50", then did a back calculation to "47" but neglected to restate the second digit. Seems very logical for those who speak English, and restart sentences or fix them half-way through....

When he says that we have 4000 dead in the war, does he really mean 400? Is it that he is ok with his children having sex when he said that it would be a mistake? Oh Wow... I just saw the video of this gaffe for the first time in awhile a couple minutes ago and I came to the exact same conclusion as you.
It is quite obvious. People have a tendancy to blow any little thing up when they are backed into a corner though. Right or wrong.

Mispronouncing words because you don't know exactly what words you are using and misspeaking a fourty with fifty are entirely differently things. Also, I will not defend Dan Quayle for his trying to correct that spelling champ on the spelling of the word potato (insisting it had an E). That was just dumb of him.
However, I will point out that you meant spelled. Spelt is something else entirely.
McCain has had much bigger gaffe's this election cycle than Obama's 57 state gaffe.

He said-if you listen carefully to the original vid- that there is " ONE LEFT TO GO" , meaning that there is one left state he did not yet go. This one left state is apart from Alaska and Hawaii, which he was not allowed to go to because of his staff
So the math will be :
47 assumed states + that " One state left to go" + Alaska + Hawaii = 50 states

I wasn't trying to claim that Obama didn't make a mistake - that would be silly of me. All I was showing was that it was most likely a slip of the tongue, and not an error in maths or knowledge, which would be worse.
