Elisabeth Shue is stunning, but I think Claudia Wells was a little better suited to the role. By that time, Shue had developed a megawatt screen presence, and so she didn't balance well with Fox's more understated persona. Wells, on the other hand, plays the cute 80's girlfriend role with aplomb.
I think I could listen to two Doc simultaneously saying "Roads, where we're going we don't need roads" a hundred times and still not get sick of it. Is easily one of the awesomest lines in an awesome trilogy.
@Jamjor The ending of the first movie is shown at the beginning of the second movie...same way as the end of the second movie is shown at the beginning of the third movie. In this case, though, the scene was reshot for the second movie as they had to recast Jennifer as the first actress was not available to reprise the role. Actually as a kid I did not even notice this difference.
I literally just now realized it was 2 different actresses, and I've been watching these movies since I was a little kid. How did I not notice this???
This is great work! I think a lot of the timing changes are because the scene is performing a very different role in the 2 films: it's kind of shutting down the first one ("The End...?"), and kicking off the rest of the series in the second.
Relieved to know that Claudia Wells wasn't available for II, and that that wasn't a conscious decision on their part. Wells was much better.
And what about that: on that same scene at 0:25 you can see a shadow of some newel falling on the wall. But later at 0:44 we can clearly see that the Marty's shadow is falling on the DMC, so in the other way than before. ;)
Do you know how hard it would be to duplicate the exact same performance almost 5 years later. I mean movement, timing, voice inflection, camera angles. Actors usually change something slightly when they do multiple takes in a row. What if the owners or new owners of the house didn't want to lend their house again. What would the production do?
They would build of mock-up of just the bits of the houses they needed for the shots on the studio backlot. The background behind Doc would probably be a little different, but they could make it work well enough.
@cincinnatiphotoman71 voice inflection actually was noticeably different in many lines. One of my favorite parts of watching was noticing it, actually.
As for the version from Part II, my biggest beef doesn't have a thing to do with Claudia Wells or Elisabeth Shue; it's that MJF's performance is so much better in the original film, but in Part II he looks exhausted. The way he says the dialogue, his movements and expressions....its all off, particularly in the moments before Doc shows up. Marty's just returned from a week of not seeing Jennifer, and he looks like if he weren't holding onto her he'd pass out.
On the DVD it says In BTTF Part II they didnt want to put all the prosthetics and make up on christopher lloyd since he would be playing Doc Brown for two more films. thats why in Part two they wrote in the dialog where they land in 2015 and doc is explaining to marty he went to a rejuvenation clinic.
I realize somone posted this question a year ago, but they asked why Doc's response to Marty's Asshole line is different in the part 2 footage. Well I read that Christopher Lloyd never did a take the same way, so no matter what his reaction was going to be different, just because that's the kind of actor he is.
Small detail-almost everything in both versions are the same to the smallest detail (other than the different actresses), but the window shades in the neighbor's house are different colors in each version.
Wow, this is really cool to see! Obviously it shows a small glimpse into what it takes to set up a shot sequence... let alone DUPLICATE it so that it feels as if it were whatever the original was.
I'm certain Zemeckis knew that things like this would be an integral part in the movies... especially since they're all about time...
I totally agree, however Elisabeth Shue ain't bad either! I did wish that the original Jennifer,Claudia Wells, was in part 2 and 3. Could someone let me know "Why" she wasn't in the other 2 movies? I love the "Back 2 the Furture" movies and personally I think, overall, they would've been better if Claudia was in them. She was sooo hot in the movie and is "Still" hot!! Just search her name on YouTube and there's some vids of her, what she looke like now. She's in her 40's and still hot as ever!!!
Very interesting comparison. Amazing how close they got with the blocking, editing, etc. Especially considering the time (hehe) difference. Don't really care about which actress was better, since Jennifer was a throwaway character from the get-go.
The replacement actress (Elisabeth Shue according to the above) was probably the worst I've ever seen in a major role of any movie. I was stunned and amused at how bad she was. She sounded like someone they found in a high school play.
What's your rating for Back to the Future Part II in general? Many critics thought it was subpar to the original. Elizabeth Shue's portrayal of such a small character (when you think about it, over the course of the 3 movies, Jennifer Parker doesn't do very much), I'd think, would really be of no consequence to most people.
Elisabeth Shue is the best! No question. I was so dissapointed, when I saw BTTF back in 1985 and found out, that Claudia Wells played Jennifer instead of Elisabeth Shue, then when part 2 came out in 1989 I was so happy! wee!
Wait...you saw BTTF when it was brand new, 4 years before the sequels, and were disappointed that Elizabeth Shue wasn't playing Jennifer? Then in 1989 you got your wish? Weird...
Claudia Wells is the best! No question. I was so dissapointed, when I saw BTTF back in 1989 and found out, that Claudia Wells was replaced (and that Crispin Glover was not in the movie).
I believe that Claudia and Michael J. Fox looked better when acting together. They formed a couple with more harmony, if we may say that. However, in spite of being prettier, the first actress was more unexpressive. Elizabeth seemed to have more experience in acting, even thought her character looked more immature. :-) Paula (fan of BTTF since I was eight)
This is a fun video!!!!! I think both actress are great but I lean towards claudia wells in this role. liked her right away in the first back to the future.
All these years and I didn't realize it was another actress. Of the million times I have watched these movies I must say I am ashamed. I personally can't tell a difference they are both pretty fine.
The first back to the future was the best for me and some that had to do with claudia wells bieng jennifer parker. That being said this is a cool video.
I prefer Claudia Wells over Elisabeth Shue. Claudia's Jennifer was more smart and mature whereas Elisabeth's Jennifer seemed more nervous and insecure.
Yeah, the second Jennifer might be a slightly better actress, but the first Jennifer is alot hotter and has that great 1980s hair...second Jen has frumpy-ass hair and sort of plain looks.
Plus, it's odd how the two seem to match up sometimes, but other times they'll change a few things, such as camera angles, Doc also pauses before saying "No, no, no, Marty!" when asked if Marty and Jen are "assholes" in the future...in the original he replies right away.
how were they "assholes"? when i think of assholes, i think of jerks, but the future Marty and Jennifer just seemed to be down on their luck and struggling. maybe they should have changed the line to "losers" or something.
I imagine when Marty asked that, Doc thought, "Assholes, no, losers, yes." But since Marty asked if they were "assholes", Doc can honestly say "No, no, no, no, Marty." and leave it at that. After all, he doesn't want to tell Marty anything about his future; that could just wind up making things worse.
"first Jennifer is alot hotter and has that great 1980s hair...second Jen has frumpy-ass hair and sort of plain looks"
I will agree with that, but I still don't think the scenes of Jennifer in her future family's home would have worked the way they do with Elizabeth if Claudia had been in those scenes instead.

Reply to my last message: I can´t choose. I think the second Jen is a bit annoying and everything, but if i say that, i will again get a -1 rating from everyone. So sorry for the inconvenience.
Claudia Wells was gorgeous, but I think she seems more like a model. Elizabeth Shue seems like an actress. Look at the way Jennifer handles herself when the cops take her to her future self's home; for example, when she reaches for the doorknob and there isn't one. If it had been Claudia Wells acting in those scenes it just wouldn't have felt right, or it would have just fallen flat. Jennifer didn't do anything in part one except look pretty, and Claudia Wells was able to do that.
argeed in a way Claudia was good for being a great looking love interest in part 1 but let's face it some of the funny looking facial expressions Elizabeth does in part II don't think Claudia would have able to pull off plus in the end of part I start of part II Elizabeth seems more shocked to see the time mechine then Claudia did
Hmm really no computer effects at all? well they did a awsome job on it. and I do remember it now. but they did an AWSOME job on making the Delorean taking off from the begining of the movie that was awsome!!
Claudia Wells was waaay hotter than Elisabeth Shue, no contest. And while this wasn't entirely Shue's falt, I also hated how dumb they made Jennifer Parker's character in the sequels, which I identify by default with Elisabeth Shue. Claudia Wells Jennifer seemed much more mature, while Elizabeth Shue's Jennifer seemed like a dimwit.
agree wholeheartedly. Shue's ok, i liked her in Karate Kid, but here she just FELT like a replacement, as well as someone Marty just wouldn't go for. as for Jennifer becoming a "dimwit", i think it might have been the rush of what was happening to her. it'd have been interesting to see the mature Well's Jennifer going through the predicaments Shue's faced in the sequels and see how she'd have fared.
Elisabeth Shue was better in Karate Kid

Jennifer didn't do anything in part one except look pretty, and Claudia Wells was able to do that.

argeed in a way Claudia was good for being a great looking love interest in part 1 but let's face it some of the funny looking facial expressions Elizabeth does in part II don't think Claudia would have able to pull off plus in the end of part I start of part II Elizabeth seems more shocked to see the time mechine then Claudia did

ha ha ha damn! BTTF has a cheesy way of how they made it fly but in BTTF2 better computer effects to it
Joefjc 4 years ago
There were no "computer effects" in BTTF2, except for the Jaws gag.
Bargaintuan 4 years ago
Hmm really no computer effects at all? well they did a awsome job on it. and I do remember it now. but they did an AWSOME job on making the Delorean taking off from the begining of the movie that was awsome!!

also, i dont think george mcfly was played by crispin glover in the 2nd one (if he did, he wasnt credited)
EagleFn26 4 years ago
Nope. They used his image, though, by using clips from the first movie (you can see one here) and he took them to court over it.

Agree!
MrSambaboy 4 years ago 4
agree wholeheartedly.
EmSeeSquared 3 years ago 10
Actually, it wasn't Shue's fault at all. She's a Harvard graduate. Not a dumb bone in her body. She's also gorgeous, even today in her mid-40's.

neally3468 4 years ago
"Both you and Jannifer turn out fine." vs. "You and Jennifer both turn out fine." at about 1:20.
Bargaintuan 4 years ago
Also, check out Marty's slightly changed line at the very beginning.
Bargaintuan 4 years ago
That because they are, as we later find out, so there's more significance this time. ;-)

The gross Jennifer was played by Lea Thompson, who played his mom, Yuck! Why on earth did they do that?

-jessiejane1972
Lea Thompson didn't play 2 characters in the BTTF trilogy. The second Jennifer was played by Elizabeth Shue.

It is extremely easy to see the 2 differences in the movies.

Cladia wells was so attractive, and better for the role than Shue was. Shame she wasnt in the sequels.

why was Claudia Wells was unavailable to play Jennifer in Back to the Future Part II?
yocvbn 4 years ago
According to the IMDB, she stopped acting to be with her mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer.
