Folding the shammy while wringing it out helps a lot. Otherwise, its tough getting it wrung out fully.

Your carpet test did not use the same kind of semi-shag carpet as on the commercial. Tighter weave carpets require greater time and pressure, but the shammy WILL get the spill out. (What else would you use?) Try using a brick and 5 minutes.

The absorbency of the shammy actually increases as its used. It picks up water better after several washings than when its new. That's just how it works.
