These toy boats have a "springy" steel side on the "boiler". It flexes as the boiler cools and heats. It makes a noise simular to a empty pop can. Most home made ones use a copper coil for the boiler and it does not flex.
I've had one of these for a couple of years now. I bought it for about £5 at the Great Dorset Steam Fair. However near constant use at times, on the pond, has taken its toll, and the small boiler has sprung a leak. :[
To me, this video is very much nice. Thank you very much. I bought the same one when I was 6-year-old. I want to buy one again. I'm going to Ebay.Thank you again.

The pipes are made from 1/8" steel pipe, I made another one and used just regular 1/8" copper water pipe.

did you sand off the top paint layer to get that cool tin look?
guitarsncarz 2 years ago
No....It's actually bare tin, this is a cheap one and they only add a splash of paint. There are some like the Titanic that are fully painted
jds44 2 years ago
wow, gimme the link for the titanic one =P

I am always amazed at how people can make interesting toys out of the basic concepts of physics. Excellent! Thanks for posting.
