@RobertFulton I had a '79 300 SD, Because I wanted a fuel-efficient Mercedes, But it accelerated as fast as an army tank!!! I couldn't even get it up to 100 mph because it sounded like it was straining to reach that speed!! but it could cruise at 65 mph just fine After 2 weeks, I traded it for a maroon on maroon '79 450 SEL 6.9 which I still have today, This car is incredible!!! I've had it up to 145 mph numerous times, I'm pretty well-off so lousy mileage is not that big of a concern to me!! M
I love these old beasts. I've got a pristine clean 1971 w109 3.5 myself she picks up her skirts and makes a dash for it in a similar fashion. I've been looking for a good 6.9. Simply out of mindless curiosity I ask you what sort of fuel economy do you get?
Woeful fuel economy! But that's something you never think about when you own one...Dollars get drained quite easily, but the fun of owning a 6.3 or 6.9 outweighs that cost.
Haha I had a 6.9 (when fuel was cheap) Great car great reserve power (not great from a complete stop though) I cant say as I miss it much but I am glad I had one for a time.
Some testers saw 150mph=240kph on the speedo. 140mph was a conservative figure from the factory.Rumour has it the engine produces more like 330hp in reality and not the 286hp claimed. This car was also seen in the awesome chase scene in Ronin. John Frankenheimer has some great taste in cars.
Yes! Fantastic scene that was. Did you notice the engine compartment in the film looked suspiciously like it had a domestic pushrod V8 under those custom manifolds and turbos rather than the SOHC Mercedes V8?
@MarinerMercury if you ever owned a classic benz youwould understand these do that all day and it never strains em they were made to do 100 plus on the autobahn they love being opened up
@bouldantis, depends if you are in the USA or not. My dad had a 350SE back in 1980, and that one did 218 kmh with 4 persons in it, no kidding. But friends of mine had imported 450´s from the USA, and they were slower than an European 350... Don´t ask me why, I guess it has to do with regulations.
why r u throttling the engine like that? the car isnt EVEN fast. I have a 1978 450SEL, and trust me they may read 160 but they're not meant for speed. Dont try to make it fast bro, cause that car is meant look good, not race good. ;)
You might want to get your hands on a 6.9! I have driven three oveer the years and they are completely different to a stock 450. One time I had this guy try to drag me in a Z3; I let him go a little then buried my foot into the floor, then the 6.9 did its party trick! At the next set of lights the guy in Z3 didn't know where to look because he was so embarrased. What a car.

Oh, absolutely. In both movies it's awesome and you get to see the hydro-pneumatic suspension working at speed!

Awesome sound on that big V8, always wanted to own an original 6,9...maybe the most impressive car ever built by Mercedes.

Power steering or suspension pump is noisy! Sounds like my Lexus.

One of the best car merc has ever produced.. 0-60mph was in 7.4sec. A bit slower then the 1968 300sel 6.3 but more refined.

So wait. this 450 SEL has a 6.9L Engine?! what are the stats on it?
