  • Man, imagine those flying in a Sigur Rós concert...

  • mantis shrimp can has the same vision and they don't need any auditorium.

  • Interesting. Although it would be hard to use these things beside in an auditoruim or inclosed stadium because of wind.

  • i thought its already done.

  • If this can display any image, it will display porn. I have said it, so let it be.

  • What are the chances that we'll see 20,000 LED helicopters at the next U2 tour?

  • yay! computer simulation!

  • Ахуеть =)

  • Crichtons "Prey" anyone? :D

  • It's not a standard display we're talking about. It's more of a billboard/looks cool display.

Eventually it could make a giant screen, but who knows if we'll have holography by then.

  • I think you are missing the point. This is very interesting in all kinds of applications including magnetically levitated lights etc. I personally think the medium is irrelevant. The software involved in controlling them IS. :o)

  • What a load of bullshit. So they have created this concept, an, who cares?! Any person can create a concept inside their heads. What we care about is if they can create it an they have not done so. So why bother using a computer to show a concept that they have not created in reality?

  • @ogrish84 ROFL I agree.

  • its an interesting concept but you would need alot more units for this to be practical if you want something like a tv replacement

  • So stupid and already exists somewhere

  • Sounds great but if they're microcopters all close together wouldn't they be noisy?

  • The only thing can get canceled by that double propeller design is the angular momentum...

  • Syncing Mini-Heli-Pixels forming a 3D-Display?!? This is the dumbest concept I have seen for a long time.

  • Wow....this looks like the first step toward developing Holodeck technology.

  • I want a virtual 3D screen to follow me around. Also, I want theme music. One more thing, this will be amazing in video games. You will be IN the World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto, Mario, Modern Warfare 2.

Combine Project Natal (or something similar) with this and you have the Star Trek TNG virtual simulator.

    I'll take two.

  • This is freaking awsome... But when the batteries of all theese dies!!!

  • I don't really see a useful purpose for this. They require complete dark and huge open spaces, what completely eliminates their usefulness as advertisement panels or video displays.

  • you r an idiot.

  • As your name suggests, you're a really stupid bitch.

  • Why do you assume it has to be completely dark? Depends on the luminance of the balls really. In the evening, and even in daytime, plasma and neon displays are bright enough to make an impression. For example Piccadilly Circus, Broadway/Times Square or numerous other displays like this around the world. And as for huge open spaces, they float, what more space do they need than the open air, not really a problem really, apart from wind currents. And why not think beyond advertising applications?

  • One of those things is like a single pixel of the screen, meaning, if you want them to display a picture or something else you'd require a huge number of those things, that display would be enormous and would require viewing from very far away. And of course, the battery life. Modern RC helicopters can stay in the air about 20 minutes and then need to recharge/replace battery. I don't believe this thing would fly a lot longer.

  • This is a cool concept.

  • wow if they pull that off then I'd be in total awe

  • holy charlieplex batman!

  • This is AWESOME! Who gives a shit about fighting capotilist fascism, when you can blow billions of tax payer dollars on useless bullshit like this to demonstrate the undenyable prowess of governments world wide, YAY!

  • You need a BIG room to make these 3D figures they show in the video if the thing have the size as shown in the beginning o.Ö ...but damn it's cool looking!

  • i think the original size is a prototype. i dont even think the size is important. the early computers were huge and might have seemed almost useless to the common man , but then they were shrunk down . they still use the same basic design though.

maybe in a hundered years the 'fireflies' might be the size of actual fireflies.

  • To say that early computers have the same basic design as present day computers is ridiculous.

  • well they do. at their core they are just a series of transistors which used to be mechanical and therefore large.

  • No, they don't.

without even going back as far as mechanical computing there are almost nothing similar in the architecture of the first electronic computers. Yes all computers are essentially a series of wires and switches that use binary logic to compute but the technology has advanced to the point where a modern computer couldn't be compared to something like the ENIAC

  • as you say yourself "all computers are essentially a series of wires and switches".

the point is that once the concept is shown to work it can be adapted over time.

  • the genius engineers over at MIT forgot to factor in for the aerodynamic improbability of creating that Mona Lisa Murial, with helicopters flying atop and aside one another...

  • do want.

  • when is it gonna be released?? XD

  • cool. but i dont understand

  • nice

  • Awesome idea. Very original. But I don't think it will be with todays technology.

  • not only is it useless but it's not possible to do at this level. wind, turbulence and backwash are all problems that will make this impossible. we will sooner see flying cars.

  • yeah , might as well not even try , right?

  • nice idea

  • Very nice.

  • this is what MIT (!) is wasting their time on??? US is doomed -.- we're becoming Japan (minus the culturally stabilizing homogeneity, Japan is 99% Japanese) , useless cool looking things being our main focus, i mean, really

  • The same thing was said about television. What possible use could color shifting synchronous flying machines have? You have to look at the big picture.

  • what has TV DONE other than make people waste ridiculous amounts of time passively watching advertising telling them to buy things they don't need?

  • Oh come on... you aren't that devoid of creativity are you?

  • It informs you. dumbass

  • ArtistTyrant you're stupid.. you may think your edgy and opinionated.. but in reality and in everyones' eyes your just simply stupid.

  • i'm different and non-mainstream, jeez...worship your orthodoxy opinions and take comfort in that you're just as blind as everyone else i suppose

  • @ArtistTyrant what ever. your as same as everyone else out there.

  • proof? you don't even know me -.-

    plz get a life kid

  • @ArtistTyrant i dont need to know you. you bore me now.

  • cool ¡¡¡

  • this will be the next firework

  • really depends on how much they cost to make, would be sweet if they did replace fireworks

  • neat tech... could be made into holograms if they get small enough
