The Scandinavian settlement lasted for well over a century. It started before 911 and continued well into the reign of Richard II who's mother was a Danish immigrant named Gunnora. These statements that the Norse in Normandy were a few hundreds are the result of the wishful thinking of French nationalists jealous of Normandy and it's Viking heritage. The Norman language has more Nordic words than French has Frankish. I'm from Normandy and proud of my Viking roots ;)
And the word "duc" proves that Guillaume-William was under the orders of the king of France ... It is a title of french nobility, not of viking nobility !
Guillaume ( William ! ) and all the Normands were christians like other French, not polytheists as their viking's ancestors , and were maried or have children with French ... So, William's mother was named Arlette and his wife's name was Mathile ... No more french name !!! She was his cousin ... So, William-Guillaume was french as most as we can be !!!
The Vikings were settled in the Normandy for more than 150 years and were no more called " vikings " since a long time...
Guillaume is the official name of the conqueror. All are french-normands dinasty: Anjou Plantagenet- - Lancaster Plantagenet - - York Tudor is Welsh but with french.normand symbols Stuart are scotish-normand 40% words of english have origin in french. The motto of United Kingdom of the Great Britain is french. "Dieu et mon droit" The flower of lys and leopards in shields are french and normans(normandie)
1/ In terms of blood, Vikings who settled in Normandy were very few, just some hundreds, and they married French women.
2/ In termes of culture, Normans were land lord, living in castle, christians, integrated to feudal system, vassal of French crown, and fought on horse, just as French do.
3/ In terms of language, they spoke an oil language like others, with just some vikings worlds, concerning essentially marine.
The Normans had an interesting mix of cultures. Historically, they were a combination of viking settlers who had married into the local Frankish (germanic) aristocracy and as a result their society was a conglomerate of the two.
They were distinct from the native people who were (and are) small peasant stock.
Even now (and I live in France) the local aristocracy look distictively different from the locals. They tend to be tall and fairer - just like the English and Germans in fact.
Every Duchy had their own cultural identity but they were all French (Northern France, excluding Britanny and Alsace). In fact, I can't think of any other Duchy more French than us Normans. Who?
(Refering to the Battle of Hastings) "The frenchmen gained the ground as God punished us for our sins". A quote from the Anglo- Saxon chronicle of XII century. You cand find it in google, and then you can stop babbling that "the normans were not french".
The french king offered the viking raiders (norsemen)the land that became Normandy if they would just stop plundering and pillaging the rest of his country. Its like europeans calling all those immigrants from all around the world living in the United States "Americans" ITs true and yet...Normans were highly talented seafarers and englishmen calling them french was probably a veiled insult like it is today.
I'm fron Lower Normandy and Normans were talenetd seafarers, the Viking were. It's an insult to call us viking. We think ourselves as the epitome of Frenchness, no one else is more French than us. You're wrong! We viewed the Danes of England with the same contempt as we viewed the Anglo-saxons.
The Normans weren't French, they were basicly of Viking origin, they had their own culture, language etc, they were just based in what is NOW a French region, it became part of France in 1204...
Yeah Varsarus, yeah, and that is why the anglosaxons monks, writing the Anglo Saxon Chronicle that you even can fin in internet (Gutenberg project) wrote that the "French (the French, do you understand english?) the French won the Battle, as the Lord punished us saxons four our sins".
Well thats wrong for a start, the order was William and Normans in the centre, all Bretons were on the Right, and Flemish with the French were on the Left that day, so their contingent wasnt even near the Normans line in the battle.

I do not say it. Ancient Saxons sources do it.
