I get why the author put this up. It's very, very hard to imagine that those in charge wouldn't do anything and everything possible to save the people they represent. It's a brutal realization when you finally understand that they actually don't want to cure the worst diseases - it goes against everything we want to believe and the idealism our country always seemed to be founded on. The sad truth is that if all the worst diseases went away tomorrow, the stock market would crash hard.

That comment at the beginning about scientists has been written by someone who doesn't know how science is done. You write grants for funding. If you write a grant to explore something that may topple the pharmaceutical companies, then you won't get it approved, you don't get funding and you then don't have a job. All I know is that to make publish an article, or in this case make a claim, you have to go through a checklist. At the end, you have to have a peer review and have to have references to make a claim or/and article legitamite. I have not yet seen Gallo have or do any of these things. So therefore, I cannot say that I can go along with any of his statements until I find or someone provides me with peer review and references for his statements. Otherwise, what he's doing is called to be bias!

amazing 68 women and 2 males prior to advocated use of condoms where only 175 couples of 440 were studied, why others got infected, died or broke up. 75 % of remainder used condoms al the time, 25% with intermittent use (sometimes for those who are slow) with 3 months follow-up (longest follow up 6 years). If you base the methodology of the study on the title alone you aren't a science major for sure

HIV antibody tests exceed the performance of most other infectious disease tests in both sensitivity (the ability of the screening test to give a positive finding when the person tested truly has the disease ) and specificity (the ability of the test to give a negative finding when the subjects tested are free of the disease under study). Current HIV antibody tests have sensitivity and specificity in excess of 98% and are therefore extremely reliable WHO, 1998; Sloand et al. JAMA 1991;266:2861).

@mykoolaidtastesfunny Honey gold standard is usually the first/best test done or first/best treatment at the time. Mostly used when subsequent tests or treatments are developed to see how they compare. YOu don't need a gold standard to develop a treatment or test. No antimicrobials prior to penicillin, now you can use it as a "gold standard" when developing new beta-lactams
