@XxAssassin10ZxX well they say you can level to 65 (the current level cap) for free. That part isn't true, you can get to level 50 for free. However, if you purchase the expansions, you can go up higher (but paying $30-40 for one time v.s. $15 a month? Not a bad deal!)

@WhackyJonathan13 He gets most of the Middle-earth but he will not get two expansion packs - Moria and Mirkwood. Anyway, he will be able to play whole game and later, he can buy Moria and Mirkwood expansions if he wants to without any character change etc.
You can definitely play for free without a problem. Grinding for TP has benefits such as leveling the virtues. But purchasing something and going VIP for a month and then going premium is the best option. Gold level cap is removed, you get all your virtue slots, and more. Purchasing the actual expansion of Mines of Moria will give you Mines of Moria plus it will give you 1 month VIP.

You cannot progress in this game as the 'extra' stuff, which is actually essential to play the game. So no, it's not free in terms of making the game good, it's just a free download really. More of a trial. Might aswell pay for WoW imo, although they're both awful.

@SuicideGabe You should be able to download the client direct from the LOTRO site. I'd still recommend WoW over it, as you'll pay the same sort of subscription, and get loads more (the fact that WoW is still a live and kicking MMORPG for a start). The only plus I could say LOTRO has is the fact that it's based on Lord of the Rings.

@gi0pwnz With the layers system some areas might seem emptier than they really are since players are in different instances of the world even while on the same server, you can still talk to them and group up with them though.

Also all the time you play it, it says you must buy one or another thing to advange with your character..so it's not a realy free, you must pay all the time..

@SuicideGabe Well not really. There not expansion packs, there essential extras that are missing from the game. It's like buying Call of Duty, and then having to pay extra to use any weapons.

@SuicideGabe You should be able to download the client direct from the LOTRO site. I'd still recommend WoW over it, as you'll pay the same sort of subscription, and get loads more (the fact that WoW is still a live and kicking MMORPG for a start). The only plus I could say LOTRO has is the fact that it's based on Lord of the Rings.
*Let me assure you, I'm not a WoW fan-boy, I don't play either of these games anymore*

You're just an ignorant idiot who doesn't have a clue. Subscription based model has outlived it's day, and now Freemium is taking over. Though i guess you don't have a sligthest idea what that is either. Since launching Lotro as F2P, Turbine has more than doubled their revenue. Subscribtion model is thing of a past, as is WoW. Welcome to brave new world ;)

@gi0pwnz With the layers system some areas might seem emptier than they really are since players are in different instances of the world even while on the same server, you can still talk to them and group up with them though.

@Cr0Fighter sure you can download it play it for free, but when you reach level 50 (that will takes 1,5 month) you must buy an expansion that cost ~30$. Also all the time you play it, it says you must buy one or another thing to advange with your character..so it's not a realy free, you must pay all the time..
